2023.03.29 04:45 its_vf Inside the rebuilding of Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and his emotional return to football

https://www.codesports.com.au/afl/inside-the-rebuilding-of-anthony-mcdonaldtipungwuti-and-his-emotional-return-to-football/news-story/a8d2deb2f7ebeb5dc07863bc4351e753
It was meant to be a beer and pizza night for two mates – retired Bombers Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Patrick Ambrose – catching up for the first time in months. But it turned out to be the first step on one of the AFL’s most emotional 2023 comeback stories.
McDonald-Tipungwuti was in the middle of a camping trip full of self discovery and cultural connection around Australia.
Far from the madding MCG crowds, he hit the road with his ute, his caravan, his blue heeler, Drover, and at times his mum Jane, and took in Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine, Broome and his childhood home on the Tiwi Islands.
On this mid-September 2022 night he was over in Perth catching up with his former teammate Ambrose, who had retired from the Bombers in late 2021.
McDonald-Tipungwuti reluctantly pulled the pin on his career in May 2022, just after his 29th birthday, having lost his spark and passion for the game after a few personal challenges and a series of injuries and fitness issues.
The two agreed to have a few beers, share some pizza and sit back in Ambrose’s loungeroom and watch one of the AFL finals matches.
As Ambrose recalled this week: “We walked down to get a pizza near my house and one of my neighbours is a mad footy fan. He was saying to Walla (McDonald-Tipungwuti), ‘You are too good to retire mate, what are you doing?’ Walla only had one slice (of pizza) when he usually would have had a bit more. I was having a beer and usually he would never turn down a cold beer. But he wouldn’t have a beer that night.
“We were watching the footy. Walla was watching it so closely that I had the feeling he was planning something.”
By the end of the night, McDonald-Tipungwuti confessed to Ambrose: “Yep, I’m going to make a comeback.”
Six months on, Ambrose was sitting in the same spot in his lounge room during round 1 watching from afar as McDonald-Tipungwuti brought the red and black faithful to its collective feet again at the MCG.
In his first AFL game in almost 600 days, he came on as Essendon’s sub and kicked what will be one of the most emotional goals this AFL season. “It was awesome,” Ambrose said. “He has definitely come a long way in a short time.”
Just like his outback adventure in the second half of last year, McDonald-Tipungwuti’s return to football hasn’t been an easy road.
He has worked hard to get himself back into the AFL system, even if insiders maintain he still has a significant pathway ahead to become a match-fit contributor regularly.
Despite already losing six or seven kilos, he knows he needs to lose more. Quad soreness meant he wasn’t able to back it up against Gold Coast last week.
The club is unsure when he will be right to go again, but has backed him and the conditioning staff to keep doing the work to ensure he is back as soon as possible.
As Essendon general manager of football Josh Mahoney said this week: “He still has got a valuable career ahead of him if he keeps doing the work, not only as a player (for Essendon) but also as a role model for other players.”

RETIREMENT

FOR Dyson Heppell, the measure of McDonald-Tipungwuti’s happiness has always been his cheeky smile. When it beams, he’s at his best.
It’s been that way since the pair were Gippsland Power teammates in 2010, dreaming of what the game might one day do for them.
“He was always bouncing around with a smile on his face,” Heppell said of the young McDonald-Tipungwuti, who arrived in Melbourne from the Tiwi Islands as a teenager.
So, when Heppell watched first-hand Walla’s cheeky grin vanish in the early stages of last year, he knew there was a problem.
As McDonald-Tipungwuti wrestled with his future last May, he stayed a few nights at Mahoney’s house. “He had lost the passion for training and for trying to work his way back, and it is such a hard game when that happens,” Mahoney said.
“The night before it all happened, we had gone for a walk and we talked through a lot of things.”
Mahoney arrived home from the Bombers’ Tullamarine base the following day to find McDonald-Tipungwuti seated at the kitchen table waiting for him.
“He was sitting there and said that he wanted to have a chat,” Mahoney said. “It was sudden, but it got to the stage where it was the right decision for Anthony to step away from the game.”
An emotional McDonald-Tipungwuti publicly retired the following day in a tearful address to his teammates.
When his facade broke and the tears began to flow, he was consoled by his then skipper Heppell.
His career looked like being stuck forever on 126 AFL games and 153 goals, with a highlight reel of run down tackles and instinctive goals almost the parting gift for the fans.
“It probably didn’t cross my mind at that time that he would ever be back,” Heppell said.
Ambrose agreed: “I could tell he was burnt out … he needed to somehow get the fire back.”

ROAD BACK TO FOOTY

SOMETIMES the best way to find yourself is to hit the road and reconnect with your past.
McDonald-Tipungwuti packed his car and left on a road trip around Australia that took in indigenous communities, meeting and connecting with elders and friends, learning about his past and preparing for his future. He didn’t expect the road would lead him back to AFL football.
But those close to him insist he would never have played AFL game No.127 without the lessons of that road trip.
“He was doing a big lap of Australia with (his dog) Drover and his mum,” Ambrose said.
McDonald-Tipungwuti has spoken recently about what the trip around Australia meant to him and how he was able to find himself.
Wherever he went, the message was the same as the one that Ambrose’s neighbour gave him – at his best he was too good not to have another crack at AFL football.
As Essendon’s post-season was mired in controversy and change, the whispers started to reach his former teammates that Walla was reconsidering his future.
Heppell sent him a few text messages to try and “sniff” out an answer.
“He is pretty limited in his text (responses), he doesn’t like to give away too much,” Heppell said. “You are sometimes lucky to get one back from him.”
There was also another possible suitor in Fremantle.
Dockers coach Justin Longmuir had liked one of his Instagram posts, a connection which led to an informal meeting.
But the pull of Essendon was strong, and the plan offered up by the Bombers new coach Brad Scott was too good to knock back.
There were no guarantees but the communication lines were open.
“There were different people (at Essendon) keeping in contact with him in different ways,” Mahoney said. “But it wasn’t until he got back (to Melbourne) that he started to talk a bit more about the potential of playing football again.
“Brad had been appointed coach at that stage and was keen to talk to him and to see if there was any chance he would consider coming back to Essendon.”
The Bombers were prepared to offer him a spot on the list, a one year deal on limited figures, with the AFL open to allowing McDonald-Tipungwuti to return to Essendon.
Mahoney added: “The meeting with Brad was as much about the new coach wanting to understand where Anthony was coming from, his background, his decision making and Brad explaining to him how he was going to coach him, and what he wanted from him.”

‘HE BLEW UP PRETTY QUICKLY‘’

HEPPELL didn’t know what to expect … but was pleasantly surprised when McDonald-Tipungwuti turned up to his first training session in November last year two weeks earlier than expected.
And, while he was still in sore need of shedding some kilos, he threw himself into it from the first Monday he turned up and completed a tough Friday running session that week.
“He blew up pretty quickly,” Heppell said. “I expected that to be the case, but he loved it.
“He was out there with the boys, chatting with them. It was like us saying to him, ‘Mate, we don’t expect you to be flying overnight. But you need to keep training and keep up the consistency of training’ – and that’s what he has done.”
Scott and the Bombers ensured Tipungwuti wouldn’t be left on his own as he worked slowly – and sometimes painfully – to improve a fitness base that was a long way off AFL standards.
Heppell maintained he needed a football in his hands and to be around his teammates.
“It was a conscious decision made by Brad and the high performance staff that allowed him to not miss a session that we wanted him to do through the pre-season,” Mahoney said.
“The decision was made that he would do all the fitness drills (with a footy in his hands).”
The Bombers know he has a fair way to go – and must keep on top of his dietary issues – if he wants to turn one comeback game into a sustained run of matches.
Incremental gains have been important, with Heppell saying one moment at the tail end of the season convinced him of Walla’s intent.
“He has been smashing sessions off the back of training by himself, to try to drop that weight and get himself in better nick,” Heppell said.
“Usually, you have to push him through the door and help him do it. He would be trying to dodge that extra session wherever he could, with his cheeky smile.
“For me, there was a moment that showed a different side to him. I had a crook foot and was cross training by myself. He was watching what I was doing and he jumped into my session off the back of his own. He wouldn’t have done that in the past.”

THE MOMENT, THE FUTURE

McDonald-Tipungwuti never believed he could have played in round 1, let alone score an emotional last-quarter goal in the Bombers’ big win over Hawthorn.
But he got there … just.
It was a risk, given it would have been a stretch for him to play a full game if a teammate went down with a first-term injury. But the Bombers were prepared to take it.
Heppell didn’t even know he was coming on the field, until he heard the roar of the crowd.
The red and black faithful knew it was a significant moment. The connection between McDonald-Tipungwuti and Essendon fans has always been tight.
That’s partly because of his backstory as the kid from the Tiwi Islands who overcame a tough start to life before making his mark in the AFL.
No one knows how long this comeback story will run for, but the fact that he is smiling again is the most important part, according to those closest to him.

2023.03.29 04:45 Jegkanikketale Help Me Refine My Blog Post: "Bridging the Gap: A Digital Health Platform for Underserved Communities"

Hi everyone! I've written an exploratory blog post that delves into a concept for a comprehensive digital health platform tailored to the needs of underserved communities. The intended audience are folks interested in harnessing technology for social good, who are comfortable with technical documentation and diagrams. I'd appreciate any insights, suggestions, or constructive criticism to ensure the content is both engaging and informative.
--------
Building a Comprehensive Digital Health Platform for Underserved Communities with IBM Technologies
In recent years, the demand for digital health solutions has grown significantly, driven by the need to improve healthcare access, quality, and efficiency. However, highly disadvantaged and under-resourced communities often face significant barriers in adopting and benefiting from these technologies. By leveraging IBM’s advanced technologies, we can create a comprehensive digital health platform that addresses the unique needs of underserved communities and helps close the healthcare gap.
Market Potential of Digital Health Solutions
As the global digital health market continues to expand, there is significant potential for growth in serving underserved communities. By addressing their unique needs, we can tap into a total addressable market (TAM) that is expected to grow from $96 billion in 2022 to $210 billion by 2030. Focusing on these communities can help create new market opportunities while positively impacting healthcare outcomes in disadvantaged regions.
We can draw inspiration from other healthcare companies that are implementing innovative and highly visible solutions in the industry. Some notable examples include:
· Allscripts Healthcare Solutions: Known for its EHRs and population health management solutions.
· AdvancedMD Inc.: Focuses on cloud-based medical office software and telemedicine tools for ambulatory medical practices.
· AthenaHealth: Offers speech-to-text dictation powered by Nuance® and HIPAA-compliant telehealth services.
· Cisco: Provides virtual healthcare delivery models and remote patient monitoring technologies.
· eClinicalWorks: Recognized for its cloud-based EHR and practice management solutions.
By examining the success of these companies and their innovative solutions, we can better understand the best practices and strategies for creating a robust digital health platform tailored to the needs of underserved communities.
The proposed digital health platform offers a seamless and intuitive experience for users by integrating multiple IBM products as follows:
  1. IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding and IBM Watson NLP Library for Embed are integrated into the Natural Language Processing Module. They analyze user input, extract meaningful information, and provide personalized health guidance. Hello,
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone on this community. I come and lurk around quite a bit as I was doing this running program. It was so good seeing everyone smiling, running and going through the program together. I really enjoy the community here, its nice seeing some positivity in this world.
I've been trying to self improve myself a lot this year. One of the goals this year was to complete this program after failing last year. Well I am glad I was able to complete this program. Completing this program really brought joy to me on every run. Instead of drinking my problems away, I can now destress a bit with some running and enjoy a nice non alcoholic beer post run.
As a token of my appreciation, here are a list of albums and songs I ran to when I was doing each run along with a score on on how I enjoy running to these albums. I am a pretty large music head. I really enjoy listening to longer form contents such as albums, concerts and live sets. My favorite part of the day is picking a good album to run to. If you guys know any , please let feel free to suggest some!

2023.03.29 04:44 One_Remote_3752 Links to Climate Job Boards For Anyone Looking to Start Working Within The Climate Space

Please share and include any other job boards below!! Instead of posting stuff like like " You can find stuff on Indeed/LinkedIn/GlassDoor etc". I think it would be a lot more helpful to share what sort of things you are typing into the search bars to help others know what sort of things they should be looking for.
If you want, start looking for jobs in the climate space- there are many out there!! And plenty of people who have absolutely ZERO background in science are getting hired. The climate sector knows that we need more and more and more people. So yeah you might not be qualified for all jobs, but there are plenty of jobs that WILL take you. MANY have the mentality of skills can be learned- passion and genuine care for the planet can not be. Also, there are plenty of climate organizations and businesses that still need regular admin stuff, backend tech needs etc. So there is still plenty of opportunity to do something you already know how to do just for a job in the environmental/climate space.
The most important thing about the environmental/climate space is NOTHING is a silver bullet solution, for every suggestion that works for one person/community/country/biome, it won't work for others. It doesn't make it not valid, it just makes it not the solution for that person/community/country etc.
I hope that for all those who interested- these job boards can help you find a job that interests you!

2023.03.29 04:43 stinkymathis Is my fascination with Dark Academia only skin-deep?

As a straight, white, mid-twenties male who works in the corporate world and hasn't been in academia for over five years, I feel like somewhat of an outlier in this subreddit. I think my love for the Dark Academia aesthetic stems from my childhood obsession with fantasy (Harry Potter, Narnia etc). Also, having a bit of a rough upbringing always made boarding school look really fun lol.
Recently, as I near the end of a long weight loss journey, I've been contemplating what my wardrobe might look like after an overhaul. Although I appreciate the style, I don't want to go full dark academia (it just doesn’t fit my personality and would be such a stark contrast to how I’ve been dressing in the past). Instead, I plan to incorporate it along with elements of traditional preppy fashion and streetwear.
I'm not entirely sure what the point of this post is, to be honest. I guess I’ve noticed that most members of this community are students, women, or LGBTQ+. I can’t help but notice I don’t fit into any of those categories, and that maybe my interest in Dark Academia lacks substance? (I don’t think this makes sense, but it’s how I feel lol)
Despite this, I still enjoy being part of this sub. Are there others like me who feel similarly?

2023.03.29 04:43 waitreallyy REALLY need some help!!

I am a first-time homebuyer and signed a contract to purchase a new build. I paid $30k in the corner lot and the sales guy said we would get wooden fences. He didn't mention anything about HOA ownership on the side of the property or that the fences might be changed.
The house parameter is 40 feet inside the road. so there's no issue with the visibility triangle or anything. Throughout the building process, there were wooden fences, and 3 weeks before the closing HOA changed them to iron fences. Now, the whole house and backyard are visible to the public. I still need to close the house but the privacy issues are killing me. I am feeling deceived by the builder who didn't disclose all the information. There are other corner houses with wooden fences in the community.
I don't agree with this HOA rule of iron fences and don't want to join HOA. What are my options at this point? Can someone please advise? Closing is in 15 days.

2023.03.29 04:43 Sellinzs 27 [M4F] Orlando/NA - Looking for a meaningful connection

Hi there, my name is Reed I'm 27 years old from just outside Orlando FL, I am at a point in my life where I yearn for a connection, someone I can genuinely enjoy talking to, someone that pushes me to be the best version of me that I can be and being able to be that person for them as well.
I work a full time job that I'm not particularly passionate about but have a side hustle writing that I really enjoy and am working towards making my full time thing; I love to hear about peoples passions be it professional or hobbies. I do a lot of random things for fun, mostly play video games so it'd be awesome if you gamed too (I'm on PC) but I'm happy to talk to anyone, other than gaming I stay fit (about 40 miles a month) enjoy thrifting, eating good food and really any kind of adventure with friends, I am definitely more of an introvert/home body who loves twitch/youtube but I am almost always down to get out and explore with those close to me. I love to laugh and would love to find someone who can be just as goofy as me.
I'm a fairly liberal guy but my general philosophy on life is 'Do whatever you want as long as you aren't actively harming others' I don't drink or smoke but cool if you do in moderation/responsibly. I'd love to hear your perspective on life and how you got to that point.
Really more than anything I want someone I can be myself around and someone that likes me for me, someone I can help achieve their goals and vice versa but at the same time someone I can do absolutely nothing with and love every second of it. I want a meaningful connection with someone that needs their someone.
I hope this stands out to you.

2023.03.29 04:41 Corn645 FL not recognizing drum pad midi hits but recognizing piano notes?

When I hit a drum pad it lights up on my midi but doesn't show as being played in fl. It also doesn't make any noise. Why is this? I restarted fl studio. I refreshed the midi in midi settings. How can I fix this? All my knobs are working, everything but my drum pads have an affect. For example when I link them to FPC they make no noise and unlike the piano keys in the top of fl it doesnt show a controller thing and a key. Basically when I hit a pad the only thing that happens is that it lights up. Even without using FPC usually it would just play a really low octave of whatever vst/instrument I have in the pattern.

2023.03.29 04:41 BuddhistX 20+ Virtual Temples w/ LIVESTREAM in the San Francisco Area (Theravada, Zen, Chan, Jodo Shinshu, Tibetan Buddhism) - Now you too can go to a Buddhist temple!

A lot of people here don't go to the temple due to a variety of reasons. ("There are no temples near me", "I'm new, I don't know where to go", "I don't know which group is right", etc)
This post is for you.
One solution is to attend a virtual Buddhist temple with LIVESTREAM. This allows you to attend a temple somewhat near you or on the other side of the world at a time most convenient to you.
But which one, you ask?
First, I've made that easier for you by filtering out many of the wrong places. (Groups that are cults, fringe & fraudulent as well as those with known sexual & other abuses)
Second, I've provided you with a list below of authentic Buddhist temples in the San Francisco area. Authentic refers to valid Buddhist schools and lineages. (Theravada, Mahayana) Most are led by monks/nuns which is what you want if you're a beginner. (For Zen, the groups are led by clergy/priests)
Third, if you still don't know where to go, try them all and see which one you like. It takes only a matter of clicks. They are all valid Buddhist traditions, pick one that connects to you.

Final Notes:
Virtual Livestream Temples became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic. But it is no replacement for actually going to a Buddhist temple in person. It's best if you attend a virtual temple in an area you can eventually visit. That way, you can actually have a connection with that temple's community.
Just because this list is that of authentic Buddhist schools & lineages doesn't mean your work is done. Efforts have been made to filter out all the bad/fraudsters/cults leaving you with legitimate Buddhist groups. But it's not fool-proof. You still have to assess for the following:
If you find any of these issues or concerns, you should leave and find a different group.
Once you find your "home" or a temple you like, support them by giving voluntary donations, and/or becoming an official member (with a monthly contribution) to help the temple with its work & so they can keep the lights on.

2023.03.29 04:41 morick_02h Profane Flag Flying

At my HOA there is a profane flag being flow from a resident's garage that says (without the bleeping) "F$*k Joe Biden". I'm not against political discourse or freedom of speech when it comes to politics but this is way too profane and unacceptable. The community has kids ranging from 3 to 20 years of age who see this flag from the street. To make matters worse the resident who is flying the flag is in law enforcement. I contacted the HOA but they are lame. Any suggestions on who to contact to resolve this issue? Considering contacting the local law enforcement office but not sure how that would go over considering the resident is in law enforcement...

2023.03.29 04:40 scooterflaneuse 114th Precinct March Community Council Meeting Highlights: an army of pedestrian advocates and a couple of old guys complaining about those pesky kids jaywalking

The president of the community council, Ann Bruno, opened the meeting with what seems to be her usual rituals. She asked us all to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance, said it was nice to see people in person and not in Zoom windows, and said Deputy Inspector Kenneth Gorman (commander of the 114th precinct) was “the best.” Last time she opened the meeting in almost exactly the same way. Next up was the recognition of the “Cops of the Month” (yes, this is really the title of the award) for February: two partners who got the award, not for any one incident, but for a “plethora” of “police work” (Gorman’s words, which I think means nobody did anything exceptionally heroic this month).
Gorman gave his rundown of crime: crime is down 6% overall, according to him, and down in every crime category, except rape (up by 1 rape) and grand larcenies (up by 8). He said the grand larcenies were mostly scams (same as last month).
And….that was it! Almost. Gorman apparently asked if there were questions at this point, but people either didn’t hear or assumed that Gorman was only asking for questions about the grand larcenies, because no one raised their hand. Ann Bruno was about to wrap up the meeting when u/Miser realized what was going on and immediately jumped up with a question. Gorman trudged back to the podium after he’d believed he was home free.
u/Miser asked what Gorman thought the 114th Precinct had done over the past month to be a better “Vision Zero” partner. Gorman appeared unsure of what u/Miser meant. u/Miser sought to clarify that Gorman knew what he meant by “Vision Zero partner”, and Gorman said he absolutely did. u/Miser then rephrased and asked what specific things the precinct had done in the last month to keep pedestrians and others on the street safe. Gorman said that overall traffic injuries were down since last month by ten incidents, but that there was a slight increase in pedestrian injuries specifically. He also talked about enforcement and said that in the last month, the precinct had issued 450 parking summonses, almost 600 moving violations, and done an “operation” on illegal parking on 21st St yielding 50 parking tickets issued to commercial vehicles.
Once u/Miser asked that question, several other people took the ball and ran with it. The conversation was almost entirely dominated with pro-pedestrian safe-streets advocates. Some highlights:
· A woman in a blue shirt asked where she could report it if there was a particular intersection where drivers were constantly running red lights/stop signs, and asked for specific email addresses/portals. An officer provided an email address to report intersections: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]ypd.org).
· A man in a burgundy shirt said he feels safe in Astoria except when crossing the street. He has 2 kids and almost gets hit once a week. He said focusing on specific hot spot intersections wasn’t enough and we had to change overall attitudes of drivers, perhaps through more enforcement. Gorman gave his usual spiel about how cops can’t be everywhere.
· u/Miser said that the whole point of deterrence was so that cops didn’t *have* to be everywhere, because drivers would fear consequences if they drove dangerously. Gorman had a pretty good rhetorical jiu-jitsu at this point: he said, correctly, that it wasn’t his job to instill fear. He also pointed to the number of summonses issued as proof of enforcement. u/Miser said he understood that but deterrence was part of the job, and it seemed obvious that drivers in Astoria feel they can drive as fast as they want, run red lights, and park wherever they want, with no consequences.
· A woman in a leather jacket spoke up to say she almost got killed recently while crossing the street with her dog. She asked the NYPD to point out problem intersections so we could all email DOT to ask for improvements. Gorman agreed, said we could start at the intersection of Hoyt and 31st, and said he would provide numbers.
· An elderly man, who later was revealed to be the president of the Italian-American Federation, declared that pedestrian injuries aren’t always the driver’s fault, because the other day a young kid jumped right in front of his car, and the kid’s mom just laughed. He said all this in THE most classic New York Italian-American accent—it was the best thing about his comment.
· A man in a Tommy Hilfiger jacket noted that he could find crime statistics online through the NYPD website, but moving violations seemed to disappear from month to month. He asked if there was a place he could look for previous months’ violations. He also noted that a large percentage of all the moving violations in February were for tinted windows, and asked why that was a priority. Gorman said he would have to “look into” providing this “historical” data. Gorman also claimed that the tinted windows were a pedestrian safety issue as well as an officer safety issue: he said it’s hard for the driver to see out of tinted windows and therefore won’t see pedestrians. Hilfiger also asked further pointed questions about data.
· A man in a gray jacket said he was a stay-at-home dad, echoed the concerns of Burgundy Shirt, and said the Hoyt/31st intersection was especially dangerous. He said he sees cars running the light there once a day, not just once a week. He asked the precinct to instill respect, if not fear, with enforcement, because this is a serious danger to kids. Gorman said he put officers near that intersection and could get a speed camera but only through DOT, and NYPD could ask for that, but so could citizens.
· A woman asked about enforcing the busway on 21st St. Gorman essentially blamed the redesign of 21st St because it took away a lane and added a busway. He claimed this increased traffic and was bad for cars and (somehow) for pedestrians (it’s not, I cross that street every day and the redesign makes it infinitely better).
· Finally, an elderly man asked where he could look up how many pedestrians got summonses for jaywalking. I think he thought this was a stinging rebuttal to everything everyone else had said.
Unlike last month, the tone of almost all the comments was pro-safe streets. Already, the collective advocacy and voice of everyone involved is having an impact on the culture of these meetings.

2023.03.29 04:40 waitreallyy REALLY need some help!!
