2023.06.10 09:23 MaddlWrld Is it helpful to create the project to enrich my portfolio
Recently I am looking for an entry-level data analyst/engineer job in Toronto since the competition is rival here and I am new(around 2 years of experience in my Home country). I am thinking to engage in some projects to enrich my portfolio.
I'm just wondering do you think making my own project will it make me stand out compare to other candidates? And meanwhile, or getting some certificates will be more helpful in this situation?
Moreover, I am kinda struggling with which kind of project should I engage in. I saw there are some tutorials about the data engineering project. As I don't have my own experience, should I follow what they are doing as a start?
Hope there will be some advice from you guys. Thank you so much

2023.06.10 08:52 WhitePinoy Am I behind in my career?
Please don't shit on me for comparing myself to my peers.
So what I've noticed for some people that I graduated with, some of us had the same amount of internship/job experience while we were attending college (2-3 years of interning), but maybe within a year or two after they graduated, they already became a project manager. Some of the people who graduated with me are already senior project managers with only 2 years of internships.
I am a junior architectural designer. I was doing internships while attending college fulltime from 2017 until 2020 when the pandemic hit. I wasn't able to find a job after May 2020, and I was picked up by an engineering firm in August 2021. I jumped a bit after until I found my new firm of this year. I am six months in. Despite having 3 years of internships some of which were full-time and maybe another year of stable employment, the company did say that in a sense I was still considered new, which I agree with. I am just really shocked that people who were equally new as me, have already gone to have higher titles.
I also met an architect who wanted me to work for their firm and I looked up their work history on LinkedIn. It says that he has a total of 19 months of drafting experience within a span of a couple of years, working with other companies short-term, and 14 months working freelance (so not even a full 2 years) and he's legally licensed, which I verified online. I'm kind of impressed, he's a principal now.
I'm not doing anything wrong am I? I wish I was already licensed. I don't want to get a higher title for the status. It's moreso I think I need to get paid more for the level of work that I am doing. I am currently working towards getting a Revit and CAD certification for my resume and my managers are pushing people to become PMs or getting licensed.
How do people get this far so quickly?

Story Snippet:
Reporter: "Breaking News! Roland Wonjick, brother of the head of the Wonjick Corporation; Adam Wonjick was killed. We have a video to be shown now, viewer discretion is advised as the killing was quite graphic”
A video in bird's eye view (likely from a phone of a resident in a building) showed a man surrounded by 10 ghouls. The man whipped out 2 desserts eagles and well as his tail and started dual-wielding, fighting like a character in an action movie. He shot 3 ghouls in the head; 3 Ukakus before the rest started charging at him.
He had 9 bullets left (7 bullets per gun), that was when he ran up to a building, he was wall running for a scant few seconds before he leapt to another building and did the same thing, once he got to the rooftop, he crouched down and took position with one of his guns, hitting 2 koukakus in the throat and heart respectively. Those shot did not get up, meaning the bullets were q bullets, though he got caught when a bikaku like him came from behind his back and injured his shoulder (turns out there were 11), Roland Wonjick killed the would-be assassin by spearing his tail through the man.
The distraction was enough for the remaining 5, 3 koukaku, 1 bikaku, and 1 rinkaku to jump and finish the job, Roland Wonjick killed 3 ghouls before his head burst like a watermelon from being punched by a koukaku. 2 Koukakus survived yet was killed by the CCG when they tried to escape the crime scene, the ghouls were too injured and too slow to block or dodge the overwhelming rain of bullets.
Video end
Reporter: “It seems that the 3 ghouls were affiliated with the Clowns with the rest part of the Aogiri Tree. We-”
The T.V. was clicked off by an 18-year-old boy, face pale white, hands trembling and a face showing rage, he looked at the remaining members of the Wonjick family; his 2 parents, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, his uncle’s wife, and her 4 children (3 boys and a girl).
“So what do we do now?” Alex the reincarnate asked
“They want a fight, we’ll give them a slaughter” Replied his brother
“We have one shot at this, fuck this up and the other organizations will know our capabilities,” Said his uncle’s wife
“Good thing we brought all that war gear, eh?” said his cousin
1 hour later
4 armored trucks were cruising to the suspected headquarters of the Aogiri Tree, inside were the 9 members of the Wonjick family (2 adults remained to protect the 2 kids). All wore
riot armor with their tails holding custom-made shields 1 meter wide, 1.5m long, 8 inches thick, and fully transparent. Some held,
SRM ARMS MODEL 1216 shotguns, and
Heckler & Koch MP7 submachine guns,
all were dual-wielded, except for my father, and his sister-in-law, who held honest-to-god
heavy machineguns (the type to be mounted on armored cars) and me who had a
Barret M82 Sniper Rifle, as well as my mom who was an ukaku with a
kakuja; she held a
grenade launcher and blast (demolition), fragmentation, antiarmor (armor-piercing), and incendiary (fire) bombs. The bullets were
not q bullets (oh how our targets wished they were, we just finished them off with our tails), they were
war crime bullets, dum-dums, glass slugs, explosive, poisonous, and more, every mag had one of each. All expensive and hard to get but oh so very worth it.
Due to the bikaku giving their users supernatural stability, and our
family’s genetic modifications, we all had
bullshit levels of accuracy and defense similar to koukakus (we were skilled in using our tails holding the shields to
parry attacks like dark souls experts,
enhanced stability means we don't get pushed back much when blocking, and if we can't block we are fast enough to
dodge roll).
We came at them like medieval knights against archers and peasant soldiers of old, tanky, and unstoppable. In 1 week we waged a family war against both the Clowns and the Aogiri Tree (
most of our ghoul employees joined on the 3rd night), with the
CCG backing us up (the enemy of my enemy is my friend) we culled 40% of the members of the Aogiri tree and 60% on the clowns.
We had a few casualties; 2 employees, 2 Anteiku, 10 CCG, and 1 volunteer V member (we gave generous compensation money to their family members), though my little brother and 40 other people were badly injured, they all healed up and we paid them (except for 25 of those 40, those were CCG members). Most of our battle gear broke but we’re rich and we had plenty of
backups, it was nothing.
Humans felt safer here as most ghouls
not affiliated with
V or Anteiku stayed away from the
20th ward. Though a lot were scared of us due to seeing videos of ghouls getting shot once, then said ghouls screeching and crying and begging for us to kill them just to ease their pain (
war crime bullets).
Despite the mini-war the family waged, the
Wonjick Corporation still kept making money, by making songs (ghouls have better hearing making those of us vocally gifted easily becoming experts), construction, engineering, mining, and salvaging wrecked ships (enhanced strength) even making video games (enhanced stamina, useful for crunches). Ironically, despite being ghouls who eat humanoids (only human or ghoul corpses) both my
cousins were world-renowned doctors. Reporter: "We are live in the Wonjick Estate with James and Sarah Wonjick, world-renowned doctors, tell me how did you become experts in just a year, an extremely short amount of time?
James: “The bikaku gives their users supernatural stability, and ghouls have natural enhanced senses, we can hear a humanoid’s (both ghouls and humans) heartbeat and blood flow, see without the need for instruments, we can literally smell what’s wrong with our patients, we also require less maintenance (get tired or hungry slower) compared to humans, we can do a 72-hour surgery by ourselves without problems.”
Reporter: “Wow, that is amazing! Tell me what made you become doctors?”
Sarah: “We-”
I crashed through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man and screamed
Alex: “THEY HAVE A GOD-COMPLEX! THEY LIKE TO FEEL THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IN THEIR HA-mpphh”
Sarah quickly covered my mouth with her tail, slowly choking me in hopes that I pass out
Sarah: “Sorry about him, he’s the weird one in the family.”
Reporter: “Uhmm, okay?”
James quickly ushers the reporters out of the house
James: “Thank you so much for the interview but it’s getting late and you should go.”
Reporter: “Wait, this is live and you haven’t answered the rest of the ques-”
*Bang!* Door slams shut

2023.06.10 07:27 NonCertifiedThug I Teach Automation
Hi there,
I'm a Senior Software Engineer in Test (SDET), or Automation Engineer, at an S&P 100 company. I recently launched my teaching academy specifically designed for individuals who aspire to become software QA automation engineers like many of you here. Currently, I have one published course on
C# - API Test Automation for beginners. This course focuses on building a testing framework in .NET C# to invoke and test web APIs. Teaching automation has been a long-time goal of mine, and I've decided that this year is the year to make it happen.
Now, let me answer some possible questions you may have about who I am and my qualifications. It might sound a bit lengthy, so feel free to skip if you're not interested.
My Qualifications: I have 10 years of industry experience, having worked for five different companies in various technology sectors such as banking, fintech, tax processing, higher education universities, and commercial real estate (my current company). I consider myself to have a high level of expertise in automation. This doesn't mean I know everything about automation, but it means I have mastered multiple ways of architecting highly efficient, robust, and scalable test automation frameworks for front-end or backend applications (excluding mobile automation). Some might even say that my methodologies are innovative. I code as much, if not more, on a daily basis than your average developer. Additionally, I am well-versed in fundamental QA practices, as every automation engineer should be. I have also led and trained the QA departments at my current and previous two companies. I possess extensive knowledge in this niche field, and I aim to share it with others.
My Career Journey: I started from the very bottom as a manual QA engineer without any relevant background in computer science back in 2013. I was given the opportunity to work in QA because I was already employed at a tech company, albeit in a data entry role. Initially, I was the sole QA engineer on my development team and received training from four senior developers. Naturally, being raised by wolves, I became a wolf myself and learned programming in C#. I utilized my newfound knowledge to create automated tests and became obsessed with automation while still being the champion of QA. From there, my automation skills further developed, and it gained great momentum after I built my first testing framework.
With each job switch, I had the chance to expand my knowledge. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working alongside some exceptional software engineers. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I inherited their design patterns and architectures, which I applied to my testing frameworks whenever practical. Time and again, I refined and strengthened my testing frameworks to the point where I can easily create new ones based on the solid foundation I've built over my decade-long career.
Why Teaching? I never had a mentor to guide me through learning QA or automation. Most of what I learned was through trial and error, with numerous instances where I felt shy, embarrassed, and inadequate when my work didn't meet my colleagues' expectations. I even encountered condescending teammates who believed I slowed down project delivery due to my perceived incompetence as a QA engineer. At the time, I longed for a mentor who could validate that I was on the right path. However, I picked myself up each time, and I was determined not to repeat the same mistakes. I continuously sought ways to improve my processes, test strategies, and frameworks. I also worked on improving my interpersonal skills because it was limiting me from being able to advance my career into leadership positions. Through countless trials and tribulations, I became highly proficient at my job.
Teaching is something I genuinely enjoy, just as much as automation. Over the years, I have trained numerous colleagues, and I realized I needed a better methodology instead of repeating myself endlessly. I attempted to create courses on YouTube two years ago, but I wasn't satisfied with the quality of my content. To effectively reach students, I needed to make an investment. I had to learn how to use photo and video editing tools and carefully devise a lesson plan suitable for people of all experience levels. That's when I thought, "If I'm going to make this significant investment, I should do it on a global scale, rather than just training my colleagues." Automation will be my career's legacy, and I want to leave a lasting impression on anyone who appreciates it.
The Big Question: Why Learn from Me and Not Someone Else? There are only a handful of automation "experts" out there. In the past few years, senior QA and automation engineers I've worked with have regarded me as their lead. I have yet to meet anyone in this field who can match my efficiency and quality of work. On average, I work with 4-5 developers on a team, and all of my testing is fully automated in-sprint. The core of my testing frameworks has been refined to the point where any application I come across can be easily tested through automation. It's challenging to express this humbly, but you get the idea.
Not all experts are adept at teaching. While there is a lot of valuable information available on the internet, much of it is outdated. Within the limited pool of quality information, it's difficult to distinguish curated guides that provide a clear path from point A to B. You want to acquire the necessary skills to become an automation engineer, but tutorials on starting from scratch are nearly non-existent. Or if they do exist, the instructors may be poor communicators who struggle to create engaging content. I know this because I've been there myself, desperately searching for guides to improve my skills.
It's possible that you could make a breakthrough on your own and create a testing framework with functional test code, which would be a significant accomplishment. However, how confident are you that it is the correct approach for building tests? It is highly likely that further down the line, you will have to undergo extensive refactoring due to a poorly built foundation, resulting in significant technical debt. While the time and effort you poured into self-learning builds character, I understand that you want to achieve quicker results without the friction that accompanies it. Well, now you no longer need to search aimlessly. I wouldn't have dedicated substantial effort to creating my teaching content if there were already excellent resources available.
If you're looking to advance your career in automation, I will guide you in acquiring the necessary skills. However, please note that I'm not doing this solely for you. I have made significant investments in teaching that have yet to yield returns. By the time I complete transforming all the planned content into courses, the overall cost to you will be considerably lower than what you would spend on a boot camp or degree program. Moreover, the knowledge you gain from me will be more up-to-date, relevant, and applicable to the majority of tech companies you may work for. I can attest to this based on the fact that recruiters approach me regularly. As a guarantee of my commitment, if you are not completely satisfied with my teaching, you are eligible for a full refund within the first 30 days. My aim is to attract quality students who share my passion for automation.
Thank you for your attention, and I hope to see you in the course!

2023.06.10 06:55 EdelgardsFootRest What are some entry-level jobs that pay well but are more demanding than usual?
I am in my early 20s, and I’d like to be able to make enough money to be self-sufficient in a small apartment. I hope the title wasn’t word salad; what I mean more specifically is a job that doesn’t take anything more than special training and can be started with little credentials such as trucking, flight attendant, ATC, or, in some states like mine, school teacher. I don’t plan on acquiring my degree soon, but it is in the works, so being able to start a career now is good. Let me know if you need any clarification in the comments.

2023.06.10 06:21 PootiTangtang verbal warning one month into new job
okay.. so i started a new job about a month ago, on May 1st. Remote job for an entry level mortgage position. I have experience, but not with the closing process. I made that quite frank when I was hired. I am familiar with the software, just not with the new company business processes and procedures. Now that I am in the closing department now, it is way different than what I was doing before process wise. But the system software is all the same. Here is an idea of how my 1st month has gone.
First week of my job- manager was on vacation. So another manager for a different dept welcomes and “managed” me. I did e learnings and trainings.. second week, manager is back and I have another week of training but this time through teams so it was a bit more hands on. After that week I was kind of left to fend for myself. The company had a busy closing month end. There was also a handful of other people hired with me. One other being in the same role as me. To my knowledge she may have started a week after I did. Today I was working, and got a call from my manager saying they pulled a report and stated i was not working quick enough and that my coworker is performing better than me.
They put me on a verbal warning. Would you say this is justified? I feel like every file i have worked has been a problem file or something has to be followed up. I basically do a lot of quality assurance for the documents and thats a level of anxiety I’m still trying to get past with learning new processes.
Wish me luck

This is a fan fiction set concurrent to episode 122 of Nature of Predators. Events depicted here are not cannon, though perhaps they could be...
-----
Memory transcription subject: Tamil, Venlil observer, UNS Cheyenne
Date [standardized human time]: January 15, 2137
“Con, Sonar, Deep Core is advancing, sir” the sonar operator informed Captain Thompson. It was our signal to begin our own operation. Cheyenne had orders to cover Deep Core, a mission which the captain had referred to as “operation ruckus”. My translator implied to me that this meant we would be making a lot of noise.
“Con aye. Mr Kamorov, make your depth 700 meters.”
“Make my depth 700 meters aye, sir.”
I shivered a little as the hull of the submersible groaned around me, being compressed by the ocean's depths. The thought of it honestly terrified me, but several months ago I would have said the same of my human companions. Their crisp professionalism was on full display though, and it calmed me as I watched the various crewmen perform their duties.
From what I read of my briefing, Cheyenne was smaller than Deep Core, lacking several of the features that the larger submersible had, but emphasizing others. The humans called it a “hunter-killer”. Honestly, they weren't even trying to hide their predatory nature with this one. In the compartments to the front were a set of torpedo tubes, loaded with the latest of their underwater weapons, ingenious devices that could be either remotely or self guided. Behind me were the engine spaces, housing a single powerful reactor and what the humans called a pump jet. An extensive sensor suite rounded out the ship.
“Con Sonar, new contact, Sierra 1. New Contact, Sierra 2.”
“Con aye. Chief, I want a fire solution for both contacts.”
“Aye captain, already working on it.”
“Open outer tube doors”
“Open outer tube doors, aye.”
The crew was so calm, but I had seen them drill on this sequence of commands before. The humans were about to strike like the predators they were. It would be quick, deadly, and without mercy.
“Solution ready captain.”
“Target Sierra 1, tube one, fire.”
“Target Sierra 1, tube one, fire. Torpedo away!”
“Target Sierra 2, tube two, fire.”
“Target Sierra 2, tube two, fire. Torpedo away!”
“CON, SONAR, SIERRA TWO EVADING!”
“Con aye! Helm, make your course 240, depth 900. Steer the weapons.” *“*240, depth 900 aye.”
“Steer the weapons aye”.
The human weapons responded instantly as Cheyenne came about. I watched the ranges tick down to zero, and a moment later we heard two detonations.
“Con, Sonar, contacts breaking up. New contacts, Sierra 3, Sierra 4... HIGH SPEED SCREWS!”
“Torpedo in the water!”
“Hard left rudder, all ahead two thirds, up 20!”
"Full rise, clear water planes!"
My heart skipped a beat and I grabbed hold of a railing to steady myself as the Cheyenne leaned into the turn and pitched upwards. A few moments later we heard the scream of the farsul weapon as it passed below us.
“Captain, we have solutions.”
“Con, Sonar, Deep Core is firing.”
“Steady on course 090, all quiet.”
Cheyenne came level and glided through the water. We heard the tell tale sound of two more detonations, with the sonar operator reporting Sierra 3 and 4 breaking up.
"Now what, Captain?” I asked. Honestly I was frightened out of my mind. The humans had a term called claustrophobia, fear of enclosed spaces, but I never knew what it meant until now. A large part of me was filling with panic but there was nowhere to go.
Captain Thompson smiled, his mouth closed, lips forming a thin line in deference to me. “Well Mr. Tamil, it's doubtful that there were only four defenders. The rest are likely hiding, waiting for a better opportunity. They know we're here, we're ready to fight. They're not going to provoke us when we have the advantage.”
“So we won?”
“Hardly. They're just being more cautious. Predators are in among the heard, best to hide and wait for the chance to strike back.”
The human captain's words did little to reassure me, but I focused on his calm voice and found my panic easing.
DONG!!!
The sound made me jump and my ears rang in pain. “What was that?”
“Active ping. Sonar, Con, was that Deep Core?”
“Yes sir. New contact, Sierra 5. Deep Core is under attack, but is evading. Deep Core is returning fire.”
“Any other contacts?”
"Nothing I can classify sir. Sierra 5 hit, contact breaking up.”
“Very well.” Captain Thompson turned towards me. “Are you ready for things to get interesting, Mr. Tamil?”
I swallowed hard. “More interesting than they already are, captain?”
The captain smiled again, but this time there was a much more predatory gleam in his eye. “The farsul want to hide. Our job is to draw them out. Chief?”
“Aye Captain?”
“Remember that list of targets of opportunity we were given? Let's go down the list.”
“Aye Captain! Diving officer, make your depth 50 meters. Fire control, battle station missile.”
“Make my depth 50 meters aye”
“Battle stations missile aye”
I watched as the weapons officer flipped several switches and a new bank of lights turned on. With a wave of his hand, the lights turned from green to red as the hull around us popped and sighed. As we leveled off, the weapons officer began typing quickly. Every time he tapped the “enter” key, the words “target locked” appeared next to one of the numbered lights.
“Solutions ready, Captain.”
“Thank you Chief. You may fire when ready.
“Fire when ready aye. VLS one through four, open outer doors.”
“VLS one through four, open outer doors aye. Outer doors open. Weapons ready for launch.
“Launch VLS one through four.”
There was a slight lurch and four missiles kicked out of their launch tubes in the front of the Cheyenne. Within seconds the Sonar operator was calling us again. Dozens of contacts making themselves known, approaching rapidly.
“Alright Cheyenne, time to get to work!”

2023.06.10 05:43 Scanlansam As an entry-mid level technical writer, I’m having zero luck finding work and I feel stuck. Getting to the point where I will take any job that gets me out of my hometown but don’t know where to start:/ Any advice on how I can get the ball rolling?
So I’ve been working as a contract technical writer for about a year now and under normal circumstances, chances are I would have been able to find a new job by now. But, the job market is saturated and I’m not finding anything unfortunately. I live with my parents at 25 and I’m getting more depressed every day that I’m here and not living on my own like I want to.
I just need to get out of this town and I am at a point where I will take any job that pays at least somewhat respectably (I should be making about $55-70k at this point in a normal job market). I just need to move on with my life but I don’t even know where to start. I guess I’m asking for advice on what else I can do to meet these goals and get things rolling again because right now, it’s really depressing not knowing what my next steps should even be. Any help is much appreciated!

2023.06.10 05:28 1971FordPinto Useless Life, Searching for an End
I’m 25, never been in a serious relationship, no college degree, currently unemployed, and living in my dead grandfather’s house. I haven’t been unemployed long, I have worked the last 5 years with much success achieving the title of engineer without any diploma. I made well above my friends and colleagues my age and was certain of longevity and success. I don’t have a significant other and never have. It was never an issue that bothered me as I didn’t need that type of love to lean on. It has now occurred to me that (maybe the frontal lobe completing development?) without a woman to start a family and begin creating a legacy, what is all this for? What is working 90-100 hours a week 1000+ miles from home all for? I don’t need that! —if it’s just me! Working in the oil/gas industry, there aren’t a lot of what I’d say are “mother-of-your-child” material women, if any at all, in these work environments or locals. So, I’ve spent the prime of my adult-youth on the road and away from females my age. Without that equal part, I feel incomplete and without purpose. Achieving a high salary job and the prestige within a company that joins it, now seems pointless… I can’t end it. I know what that would do to my mother and father, a few friends and extended family as well. Either it will appear as accidental or it’ll wait until they’ve passed. I truly can’t believe this is what my life has come to, I was born with so many advantages that probably 95% of the world aren’t offered. I hope that ending yourself doesn’t keep you out of heaven. That’s another deterrent I’m not sure what I believe on. I so so so wish I could go back just a few years and change a couple things. I feel like just after you’ve started a new level in a video game and lost most of your “lives.” Like, what’s the point in finishing now? What a waste of an attempt. That’s my story rn.

2023.06.10 05:28 joe_sausage Good news: Engineering Manager found a great job after ~6 months. It's possible.
7 years of experience as an EM, but not a lot of recent hands-on-keys experience. Definitely stronger on the people/relationships/process side of management than I am on any particular tech or stack. I've managed security, full stack, front and back end, data, database reliability, and feature delivery teams. I have glowing recommendations from previous reports and managers/directors alike, a strong resume, I write a good cover letter, etc etc etc.
I was laid off in December, and I was starting to fray. Probably 300+ applications, 4 full interview rounds (and 4 rejections, ugh), a handful of other partial processes, lots of recruiter screens... had kind of tapped out my network, and the referrals hadn't gotten me anything. Close, but no brass ring. Severance ended in April, so the financial pressure was mounting.
Got passed over for a referral role that I really thought I'd get in May, after a full round of very good interviews, and I was pretty bummed. Anxiety at an all-time high (I mean ALL time, in 38 years of life). Starting to lose sleep, quality of life really starting to take a dip. Marriage stress. The works.
And then this role came through, completely randomly. No connections working there. Just saw a job description that resonated with me, threw my application in... maybe put in a little extra "oomph" in the cover letter... 4 rounds later... 16% salary bump compared to what I was making before, and it genuinely feels like a great fit. Values alignment, their recruiting process was super smooth, already got my standard-issue hoodie and water bottle, MBP's in the mail, flying out to meet folks at an all-hands in August, already feeling connected and already feeling good vibes. Obviously there's a honeymoon period and that will wear off, but... I'm excited.
Keep your heads up, folks. The roles are out there. It's rough and turbulent and the industry is going through convulsions right now, but the industry isn't going anywhere. This is a rough patch. We'll all get through it. It might get a little ugly and the stress/anxiety is very real, no doubt about it. Be prepared, be realistic, be pragmatic, but don't despair. Take care of yourselves, make sure you're being smart financially, and treat yourselves with kindness. It's a marathon.
And I'm not speaking to recent grads with no experience; I think you've got a different road ahead, and I think the landscape has perhaps changed more drastically for y'all than it has for us "veterans" with 5-10 years of experience, in the middle of our careers. I think the "tightening of the belt" (corporate speak for "the .001% that controls the money has decided everyone else is getting too much of it") is probably going to hit the entry level folks the hardest, because "doing more with less" means less bandwidth for mentorship, less budgets for internships, less appetite for juniors all around. It's absolutely penny-wise, pound-foolish and absolutely idiotic in the long term, but... well... welcome to capitalism.
But for those of us who have the experience: the roles are out there, and we'll get through this.

2023.06.10 05:28 wonderwoman095 I have a masters degree in a field I'm not sure I can sustainably be in until I retire. Do I make a career change, or do I try to stick it out?
I thought I would come here because I've been having a bit of a crisis, and I don't know what to do.
I have a masters degree (and over $100,000 in student loan debt) in a field I don't think I can keep doing for the next few decades. I'm a school counselor, I graduated just last year with my masters degree. I got a job in the field and honestly I'm at my wits end with it. It might just be the school that I'm in, but it's a constant drain on my mental health. I have angry, yelling parents directing anger at me for mistakes that I have nothing to do with, and I don't have the time for the most part to actually talk to the kids. I love working with and helping kids which is why I went into the career, but not being able to do that as often as I like along with having to deal with irate parents is a drain on my mental health. When I am able to do the work I thought I was going to to I'm told that I'm good at it, but being good at it and being able to handle the pressures associated with it are two different things. There have been days where I just cry after work, this just isn't sustainable. When I was in undergrad I got my degree in social work, and while I like helping people even then I was worried that the field would be a drain on my mental health. Counseling and social work both are very heavy in emotional labor. I went with it anyways, hoping it would get better with time and therapy.
I had wanted to major in history since I love to research and I study it in my spare time just for fun. I was told back then that it wasn't a good major to have because "what would you even do with a history degree anyways, all you could do is teach." I would love to work in historical preservation, genealogy, or public history. I keep going back to it and wondering if maybe I should make a career change, see if working in history would be better for me. The issue is that I have a bachelors and a masters in something totally unrelated, I don't know that anyone would actually hire me. Or at least, if they did it probably wouldn't be at a salary high enough I could pay my loans, because it would be an entry level job since I don't have a history degree. I would have to go back to school, and add more debt that I will never get out of.
I just don't know what to do, I feel like my current career isn't sustainable for me, but the career I wish I had gone to probably wouldn't take me. Do I go back to school and add that debt or do I try to stick it out in my current career? Everyone around me keep encouraging me to stick with it, but I don't want to end up as someone who is eventually hates my job so much I'm not actually helping kids that need help. I don't want to be that mean, old school counselor that no one likes.
I know that no one can tell me for sure what to do, but does anyone have any insight? Information on going back to school or changing your career to something totally different? Or maybe some advice on how to stick with a career you're not sure is a good fit for your personal life?

2023.06.10 05:18 BadBacon177 Chance Me For Georgia Tech and UMich for Aerospace Engineering Please
Demographics: White, lived in New Jersey my whole life in a middle-upper-class family. I attend a very competitive high school, top 25 in the country: the average SAT is around 1450, and around 7/60 kids per grade get into Ivy League schools.
GPA; 3.87 UW/4.37 W
Class Rank: My school does not do class rank since it is a specialized high school.
Coursework: Every class I have taken at my high school is AP level, but it is not an AP class. In other words, it is not labeled as an AP class but I have taken three AP exams without studying and got 5s on all of them just by taking the class. I also have 12 college credits from taking certain classes.
AP Tests: 5 on AP Chemistry test, 5 on AP Environmental Science test, 5 on AP Human Geography test.
SAT and ACT: 1480 SAT (780 Math/700 English), 32 ACT
Awards: Nothing notable, won a county science fair for an independent research project I conducted freshman year, and I have the biliteracy seal for Spanish and English.
ECs:
- Part-time job for three years
- Member of NHS
- 150+ volunteer hours
- Two poems published
- Clubs:
- Spanish Club (3 years)

- VP for 1 year
- Human Rights Club (1 year)

LORs and Essays: Great LORs from my Chemistry 1 and 2 teacher, Spanish teacher, and Physics teacher. I have two essays that I believe are good, and I have had everyone I could get proofread them. This includes my teachers, my friends that are good at English, and my family.
Intended Major: I would like to go for Aerospace Engineering.
Chance Me: Chance me mainly for Georgia Tech and UMich, but also chance me for any other good aerospace engineering school in the country.
