"Where should I live?" is the number one question in StamfordCT. If that's your question, this post is for you. Here's a few quick pieces of information:

• If you want to contribute to this post, please fill out this Google Form. I will be updating this list and remaking the post with new information every now and then.
• THIS MAP is made by the City of Stamford and it has a lot of great data for general questions. Population density, median age, percent of population under 18, demographics, per capita income, local schools, bus routes, population changes, percent who spend more than 30% on housing, and etc. It's an incredible resource! Use it! You can find it by going to https://www.stamfordct.gov/ and under "Around Town" select "City Maps." Then click "Neighborhood Profiles Interactive Map."
• Crime in Stamford. By most standards, nowhere in Stamford is "dangerous," but there's a spectrum. Personally, I consider "above average crime" in Stamford a lot better than other places. At the same time, crime does happen. Specifically property crime like vehicle theft. With that in mind, here's some additional information:
  • The West Side, South End, and East Side have higher crime rates but they're still not "dangerous." Historically, Stamford's entire downtown area was dangerous back in the 1980s and early 1990s. That is no longer the case. Stamford implemented community policing in 1997 and it's received a lot of development since then. These three neighborhoods haven't necessarily gotten as much development as elsewhere. They're not dangerous, but you can tell there's been less economic investment in the properties in these areas.
  • The neighborhoods adjacent to the aforementioned (such as Waterside, Downtown, and Cove) will have more crime-adjacent property value detractors such as abandoned properties, blight, homelessness, or unmaintained public spaces. If you're renting then this consideration shouldn't matter, but it may impact your property value as a homeowner.
• THINGS CHANGE. Rent changes, management changes, and the neighborhood changes. There is no substitute to seeing a place yourself. Get a tour, talk to the management, talk to people who live there right now.
• Finally, this post compiles information submitted through the Google Form but there are many places to live in Stamford. There is no one answer of where to live. Hopefully this guide answers some basic questions and gives you direction of where to google "apartments." Remember independent rental opportunities are always available through places like Facebook Marketplace. Don't just stick to apartments.com or other similar websites.

The following is a list of neighborhoods in order of housing density. This was the best way to guess the likelihood you'll live in these places. This data is from this housing map.
The neighborhoods in order of population are as follows (you can ctrl+f to find the one you care about the most): Downtown, West Side, South End, Glenbrook, East Side, Cove, Bulls Head, Springdale, Waterside, Newfield, Westover, Shippan, North Stamford.

Downtown

General Description: Downtown is one of the most developed neighborhoods in the city. It has the Stamford Transportation Center at the south border — allowing for commuting to New York City's grand central with ease. Downtown has two major business strips: Bedford Street and Summer Street. There is a lot of luxury rental inventory but it is often the most expensive in terms of rent and the management of the properties can be a toss up.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Mill River Park, Columbus Park, Latham Park, Veterans Park. Bedford Street business strip. Summer Street business strip. Columbus park business strip. Stamford Transportation Center. Ferguson Public Library.
Inventory: Primarily rent. Some own (mostly condos).

West Side

General description: The West Side has the highest percentage of Black/Latino residents in the city. It is densely populated but doesn't have any major high rises or luxury apartments. There are a lot of independent landlords renting out properties in this area — commonly multifamily homes. The West Side was historically populated by Italian Americans.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Lione Park, E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course, Scalzi Park, and Hatch Field. Stamford Health Hospital.

"$1720. Lived 2018-2021. Complex is a mix between low-income housing and standard rentals; I paid the standard price. Buildings are relatively new so for the condition and size of the apartment I felt the pricing was fair, but rent did increase year to year. The same management runs a few similar complexes (Fairgate, Palmer Square, Greenfield & Park 215). Tenants are mostly families and younger couples - lots of kids playing outside in the summer. If you’re someone who wants to be directly downtown it’s not a good fit, but if you want somewhere off the main roads with a little more privacy it wasn’t bad. No major issues with management."

South End

General description: Rebranded as "Harbor Point," the South End was once the most dangerous neighborhood in Stamford but has since been rehabilitated through extensive development. The area has been developed mostly by one developer called Building & Land Technology (or "BLT"). The South End has some of the densest development in the city with plenty more development in the works or actively being built. Outside of BLT's properties, the remaining properties are clear relics of the neighborhood's former reputation. The South End is walkable to the train station. Pedestrians can easily access downtown from the South End howevever the design of I-95 and supporting roads in the area make it unattractive to walk through.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Commons Park, and Kosciuszko Park ("K Park"). Stamford Transportation Center.

General description: Glenbrook is the definition of a "suburb." Easy access to downtown by car. There is a Metro North line that connects to Stamford from the Glenbrook station (though times are infrequent). Lots of single-family home inventory. Lots of rentals along Hope Street. Glenbrook's northern border is at Toms Road.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Barrett Park, Northrop Field. Business strip along Hope Street. Glenbrook metro north stop.

East Side

General description: The East Side is difficult to define since it is divided by I-95. Generally any property near East Main Street (Route 1) is considered the East Side. With that in mind, this neighborhood doesn't have much definition. For example, a local joke in Stamford is the McDonalds is referred to as "the exit 9 McDonalds" since it is disinherited by Stamford residents as a Stamford business. The demographics are primarily Hispanic/Latino and the area is largely car-centric infrastructure. There are no parks or amenities. East Side does benefit from close proximity to another neighborhood called "Cove."

Cove

General description: Home to some of the most prominent businesses and amenities of Stamford, Cove is a diverse neighborhood by many metrics. Waterside properties attract high-value homes, while decent density in the northern part of the neighborhood provides for a variety of rental opportunities. Cove benefits from multiple large parks, but also has a lot of industrial zoning for city services such as the sewage plant and public works vehicular storage.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Cove Park and Cummings Park. Chelsea Piers Fitness (not public, but frequently referenced by residents as a membership they pay for).

Bulls Head

General description: Another neighborhood that lacks definition, Bulls Head as a residential community is usually described as where you are not. If you're too west from Glenbrook, too north from Downtown, too east from Westover, and too South for Newfield, you're in Bulls Head. The center of Bulls Head is the shopping plaza next to five major artery roads: Bedford Street, Summer Street, and Washington Boulevard connect to High Ridge Road and Long Ridge Road. A lot of dense motor traffic comes through this plaza thanks to interest from the northern and southern neighborhoods as well as the nearby communities.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Scalzi Park. Bulls Head Shopping Plaza.

Springdale

General description: Springdale is like Glenbrook but more north. It is the definition of "suburbia." It has its own metro north line connection (although trains are infrequent). Lots of single-family homes but also some rental opportunities along Hope Street.

"$1,850 rent. 2019-2021. The building itself is fairly new and was well kept at the time. I liked the roof deck, which hardly anyone else used. It included covered parking, and all the units had very efficient HVAC, a good washer and dryer, and a dishwasher. Closets were also pretty good for a unit this size. Covered parking was great. Landlord was attentive. I moved because of noise. The building itself and the tenants were quiet, but the noise from Hope Street was excruciating 24/7 -- from the cars deliberately outfitted with loud exhaust, to the endless stream of vehicles piling into the Citgo (and fuel deliveries several times a day with the beep beep beep of the traffic backing up), to the commercial trash pickup in the middle of the night. The sound of a dumpster lid slamming shut was like a cannon. No sound absorption could help the noise from outside. Pity because I loved the building and apartment."

Waterside

General description: As the name suggests, Waterside is one of the four neighborhoods with access to waterfront properties. This neighborhood's access to the water and proximity to the West Side and South End make it a strange mix of properties — ranging from working class to extremely wealthy. Waterside has gotten a few developments along the Long Island Sound and that's where you'll get most rental opportunities.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Boccuzzi Park. Building 1 Community.

What's left?

The following neighborhoods were not covered: North Stamford, Westover, Newfield, and Shippan. Here's what you need to know:

• All of these places are residential suburbs. They are primarily single-family homes. Not a lot of renting opportunities outside of spare rooms in people's houses.
• All of these places have a low crime rate and require a car to get around. None of them have shopping centers or business strips with the exception of businesses along High Ridge Road in Newfield.
• Other little details:
  • North Stamford notably has bad cell reception. It also doesn't have garbage pickup.
  • Newfield has the Harry Bennett Branch of the Ferguson Library located right at the center of it.
  • Westover is home to Westhill High School — in my experience, this high school has a lot of pride from local residents (the others are AITE located north of Bulls Head and Stamford High School located at the southern tip of Glenbrook).
  • Shippan is the wealthiest neighborhood in Stamford (followed by North Stamford).

I live around the middle of the state, and I've recently taken an interest in exploring some of the Gold Coast towns. Driving to and from them is a pain, especially coming back in the evening, when it's rush hour and 84, 91, 95, the Merritt, or any combination thereof are fucked sideways; I also haven't been a fan of the wear and tear on my car, or the fact that motorists are crazier than ever these days.
So I've been experimenting with trains. My closest CTrail station is Meriden, but the waiting time for the connection after reaching New Haven in either direction can be annoying, and also they just don't run a ton of trains, even when you include Amtrak. The Waterbury station isn't much further from me, though, so I've been trying the Waterbury Branch of Metro-North. The free parking is nice (although I'd be lying if I said that I thought my car was perfectly safe there), as is being able to stare at the scenery along the line, which I can't really do when I'm driving down route 8. The transfer at Bridgeport seems to be pretty reliable, with a usual wait of 5-10 minutes. And intrastate tickets, for my trips, are within the range of just $2.75 to $6. (It's not lost on me that the price for the shortest trip matches the MTA's subway fare in NYC.)
This does restrict me to whatever's near the station at my destination, unless I feel like Ubering or taking a bus, so it's not always how I get down there. For certain towns like Darien or Fairfield, though, where route 1 is close by, there's quite a bit around. And it's so damned nice to ditch my car for a while. I will say that it's been saddening to lay eyes on remnants of what we used to have (those disused tracks are at Waterbury). I know that the Waterbury Branch used to go all the way to Winsted, when it was the Naugatuck RR.
Curious to know who else has been using trains for travel within the state! For the longest time, all I ever did, like many folks, was New Haven to New York. And during the few years I lived in New York, carless, I took CTrail/Amtrak from New Haven to Meriden whenever I came up to visit, since it was easier for folks to pick me up from there. But there's other trains in them thar hills.

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in March 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHADeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHADeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 158 CCS charge points added in March 2023. That's a slowdown from 192 in February, but still much better than just 87 in March of last year.

Here are all of the new US CHADeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in March 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 117 new CHADeMOs added in March. To put it in perspective, there were 158 CCS chargers added in March. Speaking as a Leaf owner, since only Nissan makes new cars that use CHADeMO, overall I'm still pleased that new CHADeMOs are becoming available. 117 is still much better than the 67 new chargepoints that came online in March 2022. That's right — CHADeMO rollout has actually sped up in the past year.
We all know that CHADeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.
The federal infrastructure plan requires those seeking funds to build new charging stations to build four CCS chargepoints first, but also permits CHADeMO to be funded once that threshold is met. I don't see why EVgo wouldn't continue to take advantage of that, for now.

Today marks one of the most important elections in the US with the election of a supreme court judge in Wisconsin. We won’t be covering that in this post and will instead travel south into the the city of Chicago. Have you ever wondered what an election between a leftist Democrat and a conservative Democrat would look like? Well, imagine no more, as Chicago is currently going through it and it’s an absolute shitshow! Today is the run-off with polls closing at 7pm CST (If you haven't voted yet, go vote yah silly goose). Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who won in a landslide 4 years ago failed to qualify for the run-off. Other candidates who took large shares but didn't go on to the run-off include perennial candidate and businessman Willie Wilson and Democratic Congressman Chuy Garcia. The Candidates

Paul Vallas.
The winner of the 1st round with 32.90%. He is a 69 year-old Greek-American who was a civil servant prior to becoming Mayor Richard M. Daley’s budget director in 1990 to 1993. He later served as CEO of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) (1995-2001), CEO for the School District of Philadelphia (2002-2007), superintendent in post-Katrina New Orleans (2007-2008), and finally superintendent of Bridgeport (CT) schools (2011-2013). He was running mate of IL governor Pat Quinn (D) who would lose to Bruce Rauner (R) in 2014. He would be appointed to the board for Chicago State (an HBCU) from 2017 to 2018. Ran for mayor in 2019 and finished 9 out of 14.

• Policing: Hire over 1,800 officers. Get detectives to 10% of Chicago Police Department (CPD). Build a forensics crime lab. Create a victim/witness protection program. Reinstitute community policing. End the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) private security contract and hire more CTA cops. Crack down on misdemeanor crimes. Have officers do their jobs when they witness criminal behavior. Introduce merit-based promotions for CPD leadership over the current de facto patronage system.
• Education: Establish schools as neighborhood centers, open all-day and on weekends/holidays. High School work-study programs. Alternative schools & Adult schools (occupational training). Establish local school councils (already a Chicago priority). Long-term education strategies for at-risk youth. More magnet schools & voucher programs.
• Economics: Remove the automatic inflation-based property tax increases. Create a Community Development Authority (CDA) to circumvent aldermannic privilege (the root cause of NIMBYism and corruption). Prioritize business growth. Establish a public bank to loan to developers and gain equity quickly while providing competitive mortgages for minority homeowners (it’s a sovereign wealth fund). Create more tax-incremental financing districts (it’s value capture like LVT). Use TIF profits to fund pensions. Purchase vacant lots for the CDA. Create city-owned grocery stores in food deserts. Legalize and tax gambling. Cut down on occupational licensing. Fully audit the city’s budget and cut out inefficient spending and overhead.
• Other: Create a city charteconstitution. Empower the city council and create a CBO-like organization. Campaign finance reform. Enact ranked-choice voting. End gerrymandering. Create a local EPA that will continue to clean up brownfields and sacrifice zones. Housing-first approach to homelessness. Implement BRT and bus lanes. Fire the current CTA board and make reporting delays/problems with CTA easier through an app.

Brandon Johnson.
The 2nd place finisher with 21.63%. He is a 47 year-old African-American and a former teacher. He worked for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) as a union organizer and consultant. He organized the 2012 strikes (first since 1987). He would run for Cook County commissioner in 2018, unseating Democrat Richard Boykin by .8%. Johnson was one of the firmest supporters of Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, who lost the 2019 mayoral election to Lori Lightfoot, and also crazily enough made Obama’s political career (he’d later snub her). He is currently on the payroll of the CTU as a consultant while also a commissioner.
Platform.

• Policing: Promote 200 new detectives. Promote new policing strategies that focus on de-escalation. Create an Office of Community Safety. Open mental healthcare centers. Fund some 60k summer jobs for at-risk youth. Hold police accountable. Remove the gang database. Support a “Treatment, not Trauma” approach. Redirect portions of police budget towards violence prevention (fund schools, jobs, housing, and mental health).
• Education: Guarantee baseline funding for schools over per-student funding. Focus on making schools into community hubs. Schools would focus on treating child trauma and providing more accessible healthcare in schools (A CTU priority). Fund arts education, more library resources, and hire more social workers. Focus on providing free childcare. Transition away from testing being the standard. House the 20k homeless students.
• Economics: End the automatic inflation-based property tax increases. Eliminate the city’s deficit. Fully audit the city’s finances and TIF districts. Add more TIF districts. Introduce an FTT. Introduce a business poll tax at $1-4 per employee a month. Create a jet fuel tax on the airlines in O’Hare & Midway. Real estate transfer tax only on expensive housing. Raise the hotel tax significantly. He was also considering a commuter tax on Metra (suburban rail) users but ended up dropping that proposal.
• Other: Build more public housing and affordable housing. Focus on mental health. End food deserts. Remove lead pipes from housing. Strengthen abortion, LGBTQ+, disability, women, and immigrant rights. Create BRT and add more bus lanes, while making bike lanes & sidewalks safer.

The Campaign

Each side has tried to paint the other as badly as possible. Makes sense, as this is a fight between a leftist Democrat (Johnson) and a conservative Democrat (Vallas).
Vallas has tried to paint Johnson as a defund-the-police type (his words), while Johnson has tried to paint Vallas a Republican who’s anti-choice (his words). Granted both candidates said those things at times when they were appropriate: Johnson during the height of BLM and Vallas in 2009 when Republicans were pro-market/not insane and Catholic/Orthodox Democrats were opposed to abortion (both have backtracked on these ideas). Vallas has appropriately attacked Johnson’s tax plan as a disaster and Johnson has said that Vallas has no plans besides spending to run a deficit until he'll eventually raise property taxes. Johnson has attacked Vallas for being an FOP (Police union) stooge, while Vallas has attacked Johnson for being a trojan horse for the CTU and socialism. Johnson has sought to make the race about race, has called Vallas a racist and anti-Black history, and how this race is about Black labor vs white wealth. Vallas has largely dodged the issue of race, said he’s leading a multiracial coalition, and was the one who lead the implementation of Black history in CPS. Johnson accused Vallas of not living in Chicago, but rather in the suburbs. Vallas has been criticized for speaking at AWAKE Illinois, a Covid denialist event, though he later denounced the group (Vallas wanted public schools to reopen in 2021 and attended the event). Vallas has criticized Pritzker who in-turn shot back at Vallas (Pritzker has not endorsed any candidate). Vallas has made Boomer-tier posts on Facebook, was called out for liking bigoted and mean-spirited posts about Lori Lightfoot on Twitter, and has lightly touched on CRT. Johnson was attacked for being delinquent on his bills for over $6,000 (he’s paid them back last week). Johnson was attacked for still being on the CTU's payroll and not being an independent actor.

Chicago Voter Demographics

I’ve divided the city up into 12 Electoral Regions. Each is unique and broadly votes in a specific way. Red and pink represent a white-majority, blue and light-blue a Black majority, green and light green a Hispanic majority, and gray is mixed. Note that Region 1 is the Northwest corner of the map in pink (1 is hidden behind a suburban enclave), and Region 10C is in the bottom most pink corner of the map (10C is hidden behind an enclave that consists of an independent cemetery). For this election, this is how the city’s actual population looks like, and the citizen voting-age population breakdown by overall turnout in the 1st round.

Whites are the highest-turnout demographic and were integral to putting both Vallas and Johnson into the run-off. Most Blacks preferred Lori Lightfoot or Willie Wilson and are the biggest unknown group, but likely to favor Johnson according to polling. Most Hispanics preferred Garcia and had Vallas as their #2, but polling has them roughly even but favoring Vallas. Asians were Vallas’ best performing group. Turnout was average at a pitiful 35.85%. Youth turnout was abysmal and will continue to be abysmal.
I got these numbers from Chicago's Board of Elections page (https://chicagoelections.gov/en/election-results.html) on precinct data which I combined with Dave's Redistricting App which has citizen voting-age population numbers (and where I drew the map). Roughly, I'm not sure what the accurate percentages look like (I don't think Chicago tracks ballots by race/ethnicity), but this looks about right. Some of the vote totals might not be accurate (I misplaced 2.9k votes, whoops!) and demographic percentages are rounded so they might not add up to 100%, but are around 99% mostly. Most of the facts I got from the Census Bureau, which has it's data presented in map and chart form by https://statisticalatlas.com/place/Illinois/Chicago/Overview. Great resource!
The 12 Regions.

• Region 1 - Ethnic Northwest (Vallas-leaning). Broadly a white ethnic majority area, with large populations of working- and middle-class families that vote Democratic and lean conservative. The majority of European immigrants (mostly central & eastern) live in the western side of the region, along with many police and firefighter families. Majority of families are Catholics, but there are considerable amounts of Orthodox (both Christians and Jews), and Eastern religions (Hinduism and Buddhism). The city’s South Asian population lives on the Eastern side near Orthodox Jews, and other Asians like Filipinos, Koreans, and Vietnamese live slightly to their west. Politically, Johnson stands no chance, and neither has he made an effort. Vallas is likely to take a supermajority of what remains.

• Region 2 - Hispanic Northwest (swing-area). Broadly a Hispanic majority area, with many residents of Mexican or Puerto Rican backgrounds and the minority white residents of mostly Polish backgrounds. Very working-class, and very, very Catholic. Incomes are broadly lower-middle to middle-class. Have experienced surges in crime in recent years. Politically, polling has suggested that Vallas is doing well with Hispanics. Vallas was the second choice for many voters in majority-Hispanic precincts.

• Region 3 - Black Westside (Johnson-leaning). Broadly an African-American majority area. It’s impoverished, with the few Black middle-class pockets losing population, especially as crime and gun violence has increased considerably. There’s a growing Hispanic population in the north, and the eastern industrial portions are seeing some development happen. Politically, polling has suggested that Johnson is doing quite well with Black voters. Johnson lives on the Westside, so this could be one of his best performing areas, especially in more educated middle-class pockets.

• Region 4 - Hispanic Westside (Johnson-leaning). Containing the neighborhoods of Pilsen and Little Village, the area has been a bastion of immigration and progressivism. Both areas are very dense and majority Mexican, with Little Village being dubbed the Mexican Capital of the Midwest. The area is Chuy’s home base and the hub for his political machine. Pilsen, is seeing gentrification occur, with many college-educated transplants moving in. Politically, this region has been very progressive and was one of Harold Washington’s (city’s first Black mayor) key voting blocks. Likely, Pilsen will go for Johnson (white transplants as added padding), and Little Village will likely be split 50/50.

• Region 5 - Milwaukee Avenue (Johnson-leaning). Considered the left-most area of Chicago, with a broadly young (30s) population of college-educated middle-class white transplants. It’s the area that’s gentrifying the hardest in the city and is largely pushing out the old Hispanic majority. Most of this area is represented by socialist alders who block development and decry gentrification. Many Hispanics live on the west (Puerto Ricans) and north (Mexicans & other non-Hispanic immigrants). Politically, this region will go hard for Johnson with turnout being the only problem. Some Vallas pockets exist like West Town or Bucktown.

• Region 6 - Far Northside (Johnson-leaning but maybe a possible swing area?). A stable area of younger educated white middle- and upper-middle class voters who tend to lean towards progressive positions. Dubbed the Lakefront Liberals, they were massive in electing the city’s first Black mayor in 1983. The area is broadly white, but has pockets of diversity from immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Think of this place like Brownstone Brooklyn. Politically, Johnson has a big advantage. He was the 1st place choice for nearly a 1/3 of 1st round voters, but Vallas was close behind at nearly 1/4 of all voters here. Turnout is good, but Lakefront Liberals aren’t averse to voting for moderate candidates, especially as polling is saying that Vallas will get ~70% of the white vote. Their votes will be pivotal for this election, and for keeping Johnson in this race. There are also 2 contentious alder elections in this area between progressives and moderates (46th and 48th wards).

• Region 7 - Near Northside (Vallas-leaning). An area of affluent educated white voters, with many professionals calling the area home. A socially progressive area that tends to vote for fiscally moderate and pro-business candidates. They were the chief voting block for former mayor Rahm Emanuel (Obama’s former Chief of Staff). Politically, this is a Vallas lock. Crime is up, and Johnson is proposing new taxes on this area mostly with his real estate transfer tax and poll taxes on businesses. Think of this place like the Upper East/West side of Manhattan.

• Region 8 - Greater Loop (Vallas-leaning). The other area of affluent educated white voters, but is partially younger and filled to the brim with high-rises and planned high-rises. It has a few distinct areas, like the University of Illinois – Chicago area with students and African-American neighborhoods, newly developed West Loop, the ungodly wealthy Gold Coast and River North areas, progressive leaning area of South Loop, and the downtown core in the Loop. Politically, it’s incredibly similar to the Near Northside, just a little younger, more diverse, and more pro-Vallas. It’s Chicago's answer to LoweMidtown Manhattan.

• Region 9 - South Lakefront (Johnson-leaning). The original area of Black settlement (and disinvestment), today it’s a model of gentrification driven primarily by middle- and upper-middle- class Black professionals. These professionals are choosing to locate here, due to its proximity to Black history, culture, historic parks, museums, density, and two major universities. The area is Black-majority (African-Americans and African immigrants), but has pockets of diversity like Hyde Park near the University of Chicago, and Illinois Institute of Technology area near the border by the South Loop. Politically, this will be Johnson’s best region. Lightfoot won a plurality of Black voters, but when accounting for 2nd place finishers, Wilson took non-college working-class areas and Johnson took college-educated areas. Turnout is high, and this was Preckwinkle’s base in the 2019 election. Hyde Park, with a combo of whites, Asians, and Black was especially ecstatic about Johnson and was his only outright win on the Southside during the 1st round.

• Region 10 - Southside Pockets (Vallas-leaning). These are 4 pockets of primarily working-class areas with significant white populations. 10A is the 11th ward which is the home base of the Daley family. It’s a mixed area of white ethnics (Irish & Italian), Asians (Chinese), and Hispanics (Mexican). 10B is the 13th ward (& 23rd), which is nearby to Midway Airport and major rail hubs. It’s white ethnic (Polish & other Eastern Euros) and Hispanic (Mexican). 10C is the 19th ward which is largely affluent and Irish, with a smaller but high-turnout middle-class Black minority. 10D is the 10th ward which is largely a very industrial and blighted area of white ethnics (Poles) and Hispanics (Mexican). Politically, the voters were part of various political machines, so are disciplined with high turnout. Vallas will sweep these areas harder than the Ethnic Northwest.

• Region 11 - Hispanic Southwest (swing-area). The Latin Southwest is a sea of bungalows housing working-class 1st and 2nd-generation Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants. A small minority of white ethnics exist, largely Polish/Eastern European and Irish. The Irish were politically dominant in the area and kept up their machines despite demographic changes. Politically, the area has love for Chuy and his progressivism but also leans towards machine/conservative Democrats like the Daley’s or Madigan’s. Those two groups have been engaged in war for various political seats, with Chuy slowly winning out over-time. Vallas has the advantage here, but Johnson isn’t out yet.

• Region 12 - Black Southside (Johnson-leaning). An African-American-majority area that is very impoverished, sees the greatest amount of gun violence in the city, and is experiencing intense Black flight. While the area is blighted and has a lot of disinvestment, there does exist middle-class pockets, largely around the Southwest of the region and along the Dan Ryan expressway near Chicago State University. Politically, this area is Johnson territory, but he might lose certain precincts in more depressed areas where Wilson won outright majorities (who endorsed Vallas). North of 75th is less politically active (8k votes), more violent, and poor, while the south is more politically active, and more economically mixed.

In conclusion

Polls believe that this will be a nail-biter of an election…or it might be a Vallas +10 victory like in the 1st round where Vallas was underpolled by nearly 10 pts. Very likely there will be no landslide for Brandon Johnson, especially as Vallas has kept him on the defensive side during the entire campaign. Only way to know what happens for sure is to tune in to the election at 7pm CST (or the WI race...or Finland's NATO accession celebration)!

2022 Season Review

After the first wooden spoon and subsequent #1 draft pick in the clubs history, the mighty Roos were ready to bounce back in 2022. In February of last year barely a house was left standing in the Arden St precinct and everyone from players, to the media to administrator coach extraordinaire Noble was bullish about North's chances in the upcoming season. This excitement lasted approximately one half of football in Round 1, before fatigue, structural breakdowns and ill discipline led to the Hawks making a comeback to hand the `22 Kangas what would turn out to be one of their comparatively honourable defeats.
Round 2 saw what some would call a hard fought win against the Eagles and others would call an embarrassing display against a WAFL team. The nadir of North Melbourne's season occurred in Round 3, with an absolute shellacking at the hands of a merciless Brisbane at the Gabba. A Ziebell master-class against the Swans stoked some pride in the hearts of the Roos faithful in Round 4, and if the season had ended there it may have even been called a success for the Shinboners.
Alas the games kept coming and the goals kept coming, none for the Roos but the margins neared a hundred. Didn't make sense to keep Noble on, heart-breaking loss to the Pies and his tenure was done.
Though the Adams administration began a thrilling win against the Tigers and a generally more positive and attacking mindset, this unfortunately didn't translate to any further wins and North finished the season the proud owners of consecutive wooden spoons.
There were some shining lights throughout this dark year - bags from Ziebell, Larkey and Zurhaar, LDU the GOAT further cementing his status, Paul Curtis, and probably the most meaningful - Cunnington's return (🥲)

Paul Curtis: One of the brief lights in the darkness of 2022, Curtis-not-Taylor showed a lot of promise in their first year. Crafty around goal, even with the limited opportunity provided in 2022- could eventually become a key part of a forward line that desperately needs a small forward.
Cameron Zurhaar: While his forward ability is well known and established, it seems like a much larger stint in the mid could be on the horizon for the bull. There have been glimpses of this in the past and so far so good in the match sims and practice match played so far. Still a key part of the forward line though, so likely to split minutes between at best.
Charlie Comben: I don't want to put too much pressure on the kid, but I am so fucking excited to see him get games consistently this year. For all the talk about Larkey needing another KPF by his side, it's this guy. "Almost 2 metre" Charlie (gunna need to work on that nickname) takes a good contested mark, kicks a long goal. Who plays deep or CHF between the two should be interesting to see, my bets on Charlie playing deep.
Harry Sheezel: Harry, taken at 3, the talent is clear already. But with any first year it's a question of how it translates to the top level. Could be linking up with Paul Curtis on the regular in the forward line, but there's no rush with this kid. "She's all that" will certainly debut before Wardlaw, taken at 4, but that is entirely due to Wardlaw's injury recovery.

Jack Ziebell: May have been our captain until a couple of months ago, but at times, it felt like a large part of the reason he was getting games was because he was captain. Ziebell has been playing in various positions for some time now. His tendency to bomb the ball long and without much accuracy is a hinderance. His accuracy in front of goal is affected, and when down back, it also often leads to a quick turnover. And I don't see him pushing his way back into the midfield with the likes of Cunnington, LDU, Simpkin and co. taking those places. Still though he is probably just inside our best 22.
Kayne Turner: Delisted, but reselected as a rookie. He will need to clean up his ball movement and have an impact in games if he wants to stay in the team.

2023 Expectations

If we beat West Coast, Essendon and Port Adelaide this season with LDU racking up some Brownlow votes and Comben staying healthy, then most north fans would say we are on the rise after three terrible years.

Several seasons treading water in the deep end makes me hesitant to place any real expectations on us. But we absolutely must do better than last season. Just the one win against an AFL team last year (I'm not counting the West Coast win) was deplorable. That being said, I'm expecting us to finish in bottom 4, but I might be slightly optimistic in thinking we'll finish 15th, or netting approximately 6 wins. I think/hope Cunnington being back plus with LDUs form that we can really make the midfield work and start scoring up forward.

Avoid a subsequent wooden spoon with the general expectation that 16th is expected and anything higher is even better. What we are looking to see is growth from players and execution to game plans.
Players to watch. LDU to cement his spot as goat midfielder. Phillips, Powell to grow further.
Rucks. CCJ or Xerri own the ruck spot it's still up for grabs.
Forwards. Make or break season for Comben. No more waiting we need him now.
Off field issues will be a big oversight with the ongoing Thomas and Clarko situations.
Fans. Need to get out to games - sick of being the joke club with no spectators

The glimpses that we’ve seen from intraclubs and practice matches have the Roos looking like a completely different side to last year, with new avenues to goal, a much stronger defence and Zurhaar and LDU wreaking havoc at the centre bounces.
The number one goal for the year is to avoid a third consecutive wooden spoon and any/many more wallopings. Anything other than that can be counted as a small win, but with a new coach, a relatively friendly draw and a lot of new personnel it’s hard to know what the ceiling of this side is. Realistically finishing anywhere above 16th is a success.

So I haven’t been paying too much attention to things as it is the offseason, but I happened to notice afl is doing the preseason previews. I thought I’d quickly check when ours is, and ours is due on Wednesday Thursday (Geelong agreed to swap). Since I haven’t seen the slightest hint of anyone getting around to doing this, I thought I better bring it to everyone’s attention.
Not sure how much I can help at this stage- with work and all, but it’d probably be good and all if we didn’t start with further embarrassment before the season starts…

2022 Season Review

After the first wooden spoon and subsequent #1 draft pick in the clubs history, the mighty Roos were ready to bounce back in 2022. In February of last year barely a house was left standing in the Arden St precinct and everyone from players, to the media to administrator coach extraordinaire Noble was bullish about North's chances in the upcoming season. This excitement lasted approximately one half of football in Round 1, before fatigue, structural breakdowns and ill discipline led to the Hawks making a comeback to hand the `22 Kangas what would turn out to be one of their comparatively honourable defeats.
Round 2 saw what some would call a hard fought win against the Eagles and others would call an embarrassing display against a WAFL team. The nadir of North Melbourne's season occurred in Round 3, with an absolute shellacking at the hands of a merciless Brisbane at the Gabba. A Ziebell master-class against the Swans stoked some pride in the hearts of the Roos faithful in Round 4, and if the season had ended there it may have even been called a success for the Shinboners.
Alas the games kept coming and the goals kept coming, none for the Roos but the margins neared a hundred, didn't make sense to keep Noble on, heartbreaking loss to the Pies and his tenure was done.
Though the Adams administration began a thrilling win against the Tigers and a generally more positive and attacking mindset, this unfortunately didn't translate to any further wins and North finished the season the proud owners of consecutive wooden spoons.
There were some shining lights throughout this dark year - bags from Ziebell, Larkey and Zurhaar, LDU the GOAT further cementing his status, Paul Curtis, and probably the most meaningful - Cunnington's return (🥲)

Here are all of the new US CHADeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in January 2023, according to the Department of Energy.
There were 120 new CHADeMOs added in January. To put it in perspective, there were 173 CCS chargers added in January. The gap is starting to widen, but since only Nissan makes new cars that use these, I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the number of new CHADeMOs available. 120 is still better than the 99 new chargepoints that came online in January 2022.
We all know that CHADeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf. And while you can finally join the queue for a CCS-based Nissan Ariya, it is still a "limited availability" vehicle for now.
The federal infrastructure plan requires those seeking funds to build new charging stations to build four CCS chargepoints first, but also permits CHADeMO to be funded once that threshold is met. I don't see why EVgo wouldn't continue to take advantage of that, for now, especially since baking Tesla's CHADeMO adapter into their stations is currently part of their strategy to support Tesla vehicles without the need for the Tesla driver to buy an adapter. This may become less of a factor as more Tesla owners buy the Tesla CCS adapter.

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in January 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 173 CCS charge points added in January 2023. That shows continued growth month after month. For comparison, there were only 106 new CCS charge points in January 2022.
