I'm in a little bit of a predicament. This is fun, don't get me wrong, but it's always one step forward and two steps back...ugh. I was looking up my mom's paternal line's last name on Newspapers, and what I found was a news clipping for one Neal Mahaney. Neal was written about in the newspaper because he was a coal miner and had a rock crush his abdomen and later died in the hospital. I think I mentioned this in a previous post in the sub. If I did, then this makes it even more fun.
Neal, if Neal is his own person, had a brother named George, who also died from a rock injury in the coal mine. (This is what's making me lean towards them being the same person.) What's weirder is that George had a daughter named Hallie, but Hallie died from malarial fever and when she was written about in the newspaper, she was listed as being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Mahaney. I haven't seen any other clippings about Hallie with George being listed as the father -- only this one with Neal.
So I'm just really confused now. If my records for George Mahaney are correct (because I have his wife and children, and a daughter named Hallie, included), then why is this man being named Neal in the newspapers? I'm not sure why he would change his identity. George and Neal aren't very similar, so I don't think he was going by a nickname. I should also mention that in the gazillion censuses I scoured through, there was one census listing Neal AND George, and then the next one, Neal was sent to oblivion and George remains.

Mr. Tanigawa's next point was going out to meet people. He said:

We must take on leadership with the resolve to take full responsibility for creating an organization in which each member can joyfully challenge their respective mission for kosen-rufu while winning in their efforts to revolutionize themselves and elevate their state of life.

During the three pandemic years I got used to staying home more. Yes, I took good care of my district but virtual encounters are not the same as real ones. As Mr. Tanigawa advises:

The most practical thing we can do to move in this direction is to go out to meet and talk with each member individually. That’s how we come to know their worries and challenges, how we can chant with and encourage them. In other words, we must visit the members to get to know every inch of our organization.
As we visit each member, we get to know each person and the condition of their faith and daily life. When they start opening up to us about the issues they’re challenging, we can better understand how to chant for and encourage them. Repeating these efforts, again and again, is what gets the blood of our organization flowing.

I saw a good example of this a couple of nights ago. One of my friends is a world class jazz singer who has performed all around the world. Unfortunately, the year before the pandemic she was in a car accident and injured her back. She has been in and out of various treatments but the doctors still haven't figured out how to help her. She finds it very hard to get out of the house and depression has seeped in. (BTW my husband insisted that I get her permission to post what follows.)
She has been a member for many years and we check up on each other frequently. Still, I didn't know what to say to get her to a new point. We have a wonderful new Women's Division leader in our region and I arranged for a home visit.
The leader took a lot of time to share about her life. It seems that her hobby is collecting vinyl records and she talked about a new album that she acquired that had a John Coltrane track with the baritone Johnny Hartman singing "My One and Only Love." As it turns out, Johnny Hartman is one of my friend's favorite male vocalists. They talked and talked about him and the state of pop music these days.
My friend shared many stories about her early career. Even though we have known each other for years, I didn't know most of this background. They found other common interests, especially great nature walks in the Big Bad City here.
Eventually the story led to a discussion of another member who was dealing with a serious type of serious illness. I don't have her permission to share this story on a post but let me just say this woman is enjoying her life greatly and encouraging many other people in the process. My friend was very encouraged by the conversation.
Mr. Tanigawa continued:

[By] taking steps to visit and meet each person on it one by one, we can deliver hand-crafted encouragement to them. This network of personal encouragement is what gets the engine going for expanding and advancing kosen-rufu in our local communities.

Not technically a TIL because I came across this info about three weeks ago, but I’m finally getting around to posting it. Sharing some other highlights of early north campus history that I came across while reading old Michigan Daily articles and Regent meeting notes (as one does).
In February of 1950 the UM Regents approved the $66,000 purchase of 88 acres of land north of the Huron River. Later that year another $55,873 was spent to purchase an adjoining property which totaled 71.5 acres. Initially there was no concrete plan for the space, though UM anticipated continued growth in the aftermath of World War II. For a frame of reference the core of the central campus diag is about 40 acres.
Towards the end of 1950 the Engineering Research Council made a formal recommendation to conduct a planning study to develop new research facilities. Plans for a new research campus were announced in January of 1952. By that time the available land totaled 267 acres. The original plan for north campus (photo here) was designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen and featured plans for an outdoor amphitheater and artificial lagoon roughly where Bursley is today.
By the fall of 1953 construction of the Cooley Lab, the first building on campus, was nearing completion. Another 100 or so acres had also been purchased.
You can see here an aerial view of north campus from 1957, looking south towards the VA hospital. In the foreground you can see the original iteration of Northwood (then known as married student housing). The majority of the land was still undeveloped.
This series of articles in The Michigan Daily from 1958 highlight a great deal of the construction and longer term plans for the campus. By the mid 1960s a few more buildings, including Pierpont Commons, had been constructed. This aerial photo from 1964 offers a more familiar view of campus. The acreage of north campus again doubled in just over a decade, spreading over 740 acres by 1965.
By the mid 1960s there were concrete plans in place to move the entire School of Music and transition engineering programs beyond research facilities. Eero Saarinen’s vision for the School of Music building was realized but most of his other plans were not. This Michigan Daily article section 1965 tried to imagine what the north campus of the future might look like.
It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 1980s that classroom facilities on north campus became part of the larger plan. The Dow building was constructed with the intention of housing several engineering departments (CEE, IOE, and ME), humanities courses, and CoE admin offices.

Tourism is a small but important part of Kashmir’s economy. However, in the name of tourism, the government should not put the fragile and already-strained natural resources and public infrastructure in the region under even more pressure, lest it lead to a complete destruction of the beautiful valley, which is home to 7 million people.
Four years after India made Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) its youngest Union territory, the region is expected to receive around 2 crore (20 million) tourists this year. This was revealed by the lieutenant governor of the Union territory Manoj Sinha in April while laying the foundation stone of a medical college in the outskirts of Srinagar.
Sinha said that the number of tourists J&K is set to receive during this year would break all previous records of tourist influx into Kashmir.
Will the Union territory, especially the ecologically fragile Kashmir valley, be able to accommodate such a huge number of tourists?
What about the amount of waste 2 crore tourists will generate? Does the Union territory have the infrastructure to treat this waste scientifically, considering that the number of tourists visiting is more than twice the population of the region?
Do we have scientific waste management systems in place in Srinagar and other tourist places of J&K?
In this article I will be explaining all this with facts and figures.
Shrinking farmlands and tourism
Tourists who visit Kashmir are fascinated by the natural beauty while they move around on the Jammu–Srinagar highway (National Highway 44). They are often seen taking pictures in the saffron fields of Pampore or with the mustard flowers elsewhere in the valley (which bloom in abundance around the spring season— March to April).
Does the Union territory have the infrastructure to treat this waste scientifically, considering that the number of tourists visiting is more than twice the population of the region?
When tourists visit Pahalgam, they take selfies near the apple trees that dot the landscape on the way to this beautiful tourist resort.
Imagine what will happen if the beauty of this landscape is allowed to perish? There will be no reason for tourists to visit Kashmir. More importantly, it will become well-nigh impossible for Kashmiris to live in Kashmir.
The government’s own data reveals that agriculture landholding in J&K has come down drastically. As per a report published on 10th agriculture census (2015–16) by the financial commissioner of revenue for the erstwhile state of J&K, the total number of operational holdings in the state was 14.16 lakh, operating on 8.42 lakh hectare of land.
This was 14.49 lakh holdings operating on 8.95 lakh hectare of land in the 9th agriculture census ( 2010–11).
This means that in a mere five-year period, J&K had witnessed a decrease of 2.27 percent in the number of holdings and a decrease of 5.92 percent in the operating area under agriculture.
The average holding size in J&K during the 10th agriculture census (2015–16) stood at 0.59 hectare. This has come down further in the 2021–22 agriculture census whose final report is yet to be made public.
As per the 2015–16 agriculture census, around 84 percent of farmers in J&K were marginal farmers and 11.29 percent, 4.10 percent, 0.78 percent and 0.04 percent farmers had small, semi-medium, medium and large land holdings respectively.
Marginal farmers are those who have less than 1 hectare of land holdings, small farmers have 1–2 hectare of land holdings, semi-medium farmers have 2–4 hectare of land holdings, medium farmers have 4–10 hectare of land holdings, and large farmers have more than 10 hectare of land holdings.
In the 9th agriculture census, the average land holding in J&K was 0.62 hectare and between 2010–11 and 2015–16 agriculture censuses, there has been a decrease of 0.03 hectare of agriculture land holding.
The unofficial figures say that the agricultural land has shrunk further in the last five–six years and is now only around 0.5 hectare. If this downward spiral continues, I believe that in the next 25 to 30 years, 90 percent of the rural population in J&K, especially in the Kashmir valley, will become landless.
We will see only concrete structures on our agricultural land. It will have serious consequences for our agriculture economy and tourism will be severely impacted as well. There will be more floods as our wetlands and lakes are choked and the built up concrete area doesn’t allow water to seep into the ground.
Unscientific waste disposal and illegal mining
In future, shrinking farmlands will not only impact our agriculture and tourism but will also have a direct impact on management of our municipal solid waste.
In J&K, 90 percent of the urban local bodies, including the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and smaller councils and committees have no official landfill sites. Waste is not treated as per the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2016. Even in Srinagar city, the only garbage dump site located at Achan Saidpora is choked and emits an obnoxious smell, especially during summer months.
Enough land isn’t available in our towns and cities to set up scientific landfill sites. In hilly towns, this is even more of a challenge, especially in Ramban, Doda and Udhampur, where municipal solid waste is dumped unscientifically in forests or waterbodies.
During the last decade, the SMC has not been able to acquire even 50–60 acre of land for creating a landfill as an alternative to the overburdened Achan Saidpora site.
In 2017, the then deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh, who was also the Minister for Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD), while responding to a question from a legislator of Srinagar, Mubarak Gul, said on the floor of the J&K assembly that a committee had been constituted under the district magistrate of Srinagar to look for land to create a new landfill site in Srinagar but the committee could not find even 10 acre of land to set up the new landfill site.
It is a well-known fact that Srinagar and a majority of the districts in J&K have small landholdings and most of the land is already occupied by shopping complexes or housing colonies and finding large patches of land to set up landfill sites or garbage dump sites is a herculean task.
This is the reason that a majority of our water bodies, such as lakes, wetlands, rivers and streams, have become waste dump sites and this author had to move a formal application before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to ensure a clean-up of the Doodh Ganga river in the Srinagar–Budgam area.
This waterbody is being used to dump solid waste at multiple locations by local residents. The Geology and Mining Department has auctioned this stream for riverbed mining with effect from September 2021 to 2026. The project proponent is mining as deep as 10 metre while only mining till 1 metre depth is allowed.
Huge cranes and JCB are also used for extracting sand, boulders and gravel, which is in violation of the J&K Minor Mineral Concession Rules 2016 and the guidelines of J&K State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA).
In addition, the SMC and a few other government bodies have set up around 13 wastewater pump stations on the banks of Doodh Ganga, which flush out untreated water and sewage into the stream in violation of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Keeping these violations under consideration and after providing the material facts, the NGT imposed a penalty of ₹35 crore on the government of J&K in October this year
In March this year, a ₹3 crore penalty had already been imposed. The money was released from the coffers of SMC, the Department of Geology and Mining and the municipal committees of Chadoora and Budgam.
In the Poonch district of Jammu, the local municipality is using the Poonch river as a garbage dump site. In this case, too, a few months back this author had to move an application before the NGT. Notice was issued to the district magistrate, Poonch and the pollution control committee, asking for a detailed report from them. The case is listed for hearing in July.
Conclusion
Heaps of plastic waste can be seen in the tourist places of Kashmir, such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yusmarg and Doodhpathri. The government should seriously think about banning plastic in these tourist spots.
The pilgrims visiting the Amarnath cave are littering in the high altitude mountains, which is even more dangerous because the waste does not decompose easily in the freezing weather at such high altitudes. The cave is also adjacent to the magnificent Kolahoi glacier and the waste acts like a hot knife through butter, trapping sunlight and cutting through the white snow and ice.
People visit the cave for spiritual reasons, but when they engage in anti-nature activities by throwing plastic, food and other wastes in the pristine glaciers and mountains, it leads to environmental destruction.
In Srinagar city alone, around 500 metric tonne of waste is generated daily and this quantity goes up during the tourist rush in summers. Unfortunately not even 10 percent of this waste is treated.
Same is the case with other tourist places of J&K such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam. When 2 crore tourists visit J&K in a year, how will authorities manage them? Do we have scientific landfill sites? What about the carbon footprints these tourists will leave?
So it is advisable that the government must first concentrate on ensuring that all tourist places have a scientific waste management system in place. Plastic must be completely banned. No food items packed in plastic wrappers should be sold at tourist resorts.
The pilgrims coming for pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave should not be allowed to carry any plastic packed food materials and the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine should also be reduced, as recommended by Nitesh SenGupta Committee report.
Tourism is a small but vital part of Kashmir’s economy. But we must not let unregulated tourism put an unbearable strain on the natural resources and infrastructure of the region. By doing so, we may earn quick bucks for a few years, but it will ultimately result in Kashmir becoming a trashbowl.
Let us not allow Kashmir valley to become a trash valley.

Animosity, "The Black Page" (2005)

I think there is a strong case to be made that Animosity was one of the first proper Deathcore bands in the United States. Animosity released their first EP, Hellraiser, in 2002, and their first album, Shut It Down in 2003, on Tribunal Records. However, it was their 2005 album, Empires, with the single, "The Black Page" that really launched their career.
Empires is an absolutely slamming buzzsaw of an album; basically every track is a banger, with notable entries like, "Commoditism", "Holy Shackles", "The Black Page", and "Plutocracy". If you've ever wondered what teenage angst looked like in an early 2000's American suburb, just watch "The Black Page" music video (linked above). The music video is a kind of time capsule for the early days of the genre: young guys (16-17 years old) with a singular focus on jamming, and tearing a house apart in the process, with wild, ballistic energy. You can hear all the hallmarks of the genre forming in Empires, minor ascending tremolo lines, slamming non sequitur breakdowns, a weird infusion of hip hop / nu metal sounds, two middle fingers for the elites, and a kind of desperate urge to just make it happen - these guys are shooting the video in what looks like the fucking backyard of a duplex.
Animosity offers an unforgiving blend of thrash and hardcore in the vein of death metal and is undoubtedly one of the progenitors of the genre. Go listen to Empires (2005) today.
A note about "Forgotten Favorites":
I've noticed there are a lot of OG metal fans on this sub, and I recognize that for many of you these so-called, "Forgotten Favorites", aren't forgotten at all, and you've kept these songs in your daily rotation for years. I just want to remind everyone that there are also new listeners on this sub, fans who are just going to their first metal concert, who just heard Lorna Shore for the first time on TikTok, who don't know anything about where this genre comes from or its maligned early days. For OG fans, "Forgotten Favorites" is mostly a nostalgia trip, but for new listeners, I hope it provides some historical context and a stepping stone to explore the genre in more depth.

I posted this as a long comment in a big thread, but thought it might resonate with a wider audience....

I really, really enjoy Marvel Snap. It's the first mobile game I've ever played consistently. I am pretty shocked by the overall tenor of players on Reddit. Every announcement and update seems to be their "last straw" for their bad experiences with the game. I know, I know... vocal minority, but some of you REALLY seem to not have a good experience with the game? I find it puzzling. So want to share my experience, which is overwhelmingly positive, and maybe we can see what our similarities and differences are?

Here's How I Enjoy Marvel Snap:

I started playing during the Black Panther season, and I play only on mobile. I spend $10/mo on the Season Pass because I like the additional rewards. I chose to start buying the season pass in Silver Surfer season because I was playing daily so it really felt like the exchange was worthwhile. That said, I do not spend any additional money to get more gold or tokens or any special variant packages or whatever. I just slowly accumulate gold through gameplay to purchase cool variants when I get enough.
I am CL4700, and Series 3 complete. I probably play on average 30 matches a day, I'm guessing?Maybe more some days if all we are doing is laying around with our phones out or I have a long commute that day?
All cards acquired since I began playing were through opening Collector's Reserve boxes as I climb through the CL. I don't save the Reserves for specific updates or new seasons, I open everything as I go, and my primary focus is collecting credits by completing my dailies and upgrading cards to increase CL and open more reserves. I am indifferent to upgrading my cards for specific borders or trying to get splits, I actually usually stop at Legendary or Ultra for most cards and focus on upgrading new cards and variants. I am focused entirely on upgrading cards not for aesthetic reasons, but to increase my collection level and open more reserve boxes.
I initially spent gold on buying new missions when I first started playing, because I wanted to move up the CL faster and get the chance to pull a new card, but the past few seasons I've reached enough cards to save gold for variants.
I've never spent actual money on to get to a card (outside of my monthly subscription). Cards I am missing are High Evo, Howard, Iron Lad, Kang, Negasonic, Shanna, Stegron, Thanos, Living Tribunal.
I didn't really "get" the tokens aspect when they first rolled it out so I used my first tokens on some dumb series 3/4 cards, but have since used tokens, once accumulated, on Wong, Galactus, and just yesterday I finally got to 6000 and grabbed Jeff.
I have never made it to Infinite. I always get to at least 60 and I've made 90 once. I am not disciplined on snapping and retreating, I pretty much always play out the hand unless I'm for sure gonna lose badly, so I swing wildly from 50s to 80s week after week. I don't care about infinite and it's never a goal for me. I treat 60 as Infinite, and get my variant, and throughout my climb I just play different decks that I'm in the mood for. Or if I see a cool deck I want to try or iterate on. Or make new decks to fit the hot location.
I am assuming that the quiet majority who enjoy this game play like me?
I have no complaints about my 10 bucks a month...it feels totally worth it for the amount of time I find myself picking up my phone and playing the game. I only vaguely pay attention to series drops and I don't really understand why others do except for perhaps because of FOMO about missing cards? I don't pay attention to the buffs or nerfs, and usually don't even notice them until I go to play a card and something has changed. The accumulation of cards doesn't feel slow to me, but perhaps because I play so casually?

Hi I have read contrasting information regarding MR. Some say if you do an MR, there is a chance they review all of your award. Others have said they do not review all, if you only put through and clearly state the elements you disagree with and it is at Tribunals they look at the lot as you basically start on 0 points.
Can someone clear this up please as I scored low on mobility but I shouldn’t have and I have further consultant evidence etc, however I didn’t want to risk my award as I got the daily living component. My mobility is also going to decline due to my conditions. It is also now past the 30 days.
