2023.03.29 06:06 ButterfliesInSpace Crime/Mystery Investigation shows

Hello! I’ve run out of things to watch. I really like mystery/crime shows, so I’m looking for suggestions.
I like the ones that are more centered around investigating or court cases, and less thrilleaction. I don’t like horror. Detective and court shows are my favorite, but I like anything with a lot of investigating.
Some of my favorites are The Lincoln Lawyer, Criminal Minds, Broad Church, The Glass Onion, Monk, Law & Order, Mind Hunter, BBC Sherlock, Psych and Unbelievable.
I have Netflix and Prime, and anything that’s free on Pluto.tv or Tubi.
I don’t like the true crime ones, like forensic files or any of the shows about real serial killers.
Thanks!

2023.03.29 05:58 LadyAntiope Completed Bingo card with reviews: Re-tellings theme

This is my second year of bingo, so naturally I had to extra challenge myself and do a themed card this time. I set out to do strictly re-tellings, but I ended up broadening the category to include strongly inspired by or incorporating folk tales or mythology. It’s a category I read a lot in anyway, and I love that the genre is exploding to include cultures world-wide. And yet somehow I only ended up with 13 authors of color (out of 40 - counting all the short stories). But this year was about 90% women (with 3 non-binary and one man), so huzzah for feminist re-tellings! And all but four of the authors were new to me. I didn’t quite hit all hard mode, but the theme was my hard mode, really.
I tried to cover a variety of inspiration texts (myths, folk tales, “classic literature,” film) as well as stories from around the world, but I’m missing any representation from Australia and the Pacific Islands as well as South America. The origins of a lot of the stories are Western European, but some have been re-told in settings elsewhere in the world. East Asia also ended up well represented.
I did end up substituting a square this year. Instead of “weird ecology,” I opted for 2018’s “a god is a character” square. There were a couple books that had some weird landscaping in them, but none of them quite fit the spirit of the square. Things like a magical forest in an otherwise standard-issue earthly landscape rather than a fundamentally different ecosystem overall. If anyone has any recs for re-tellings set on far-flung planets, let me know! I tend not to do deep researching – mostly I read somewhat mindfully, hoping for the best, and panic in January.
Here’s the visual card: https://imgur.com/4XRW9W9

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (LGBTQIA list)
The Iliad from Patroclus’ perspective, but starting with his childhood and teenage years in which he and Achilles grow up together and fall in love.
If you remember the Iliad or just the general arc of the story of the Trojan war, then you will go into this knowing it’s going to be a tragedy. That doesn’t make the pain any less exquisite. The time we spend growing up with Patroclus moves from lonely and neglected to beautiful, golden, idyllic. The voice of Patroclus – pacifist and healer – is expertly written and his relationship with god-like Achilles is full of moments that make the heart ache. This is still on the best-seller list for a reason.

Lore Olympus: Volume One by Rachel Smythe (Substitute square: god character, HM)
Olympus is a contemporary city, albeit still only inhabited by gods, and Hades and Persephone might be falling for each other.
Graphic novel. The limited color palettes in this volume are excellent, emphasizing mood and character. It’s beautiful to read. The Greek gods are notorious for having very human flaws, and this telling feels very rooted in human emotions. Olympus feels a bit like a college campus in this telling. There’s a lot of loneliness, and trying to figure out how to fit in. It also gets a big content warning for rape.

Hag: Forgotten Folk Tales Retold by Imogen Hermes Gowar, Naomi Booth, Emma Glass, Irenosen Okojie, Daisy Johnson, Natasha Carthew, Eimear McBride, Liv Little, Mahsuda Snaith, Kirsty Logan (2+ authors, HM)
Strange folk tales from every corner of the U.K. are re-imagined – often in contemporary settings – giving women voices they may have been denied in the originals.
It took me a long time to read all these short stories because almost every one deals with death or brutality towards women. That’s not to say they all have unhappy endings – indeed, some have joyously vengeful endings – but there’s quiet tragedy and outright violence woven throughout. Powerful stories, strong narrator voices, and often poetic prose, but read when in a strong mental state.

A Clash of Steel: A Treasure Island Remix by C.B. Lee (Historical, HM)
Treasure Island set in 1826 in the South China Sea with a pirate crew of queer misfits sailing for treasure and a better life – plus actual historical Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao as Captain Flint.
With contemporary prose and an updated cast, this still feels true to the source material with the adventurous quest deciphering maps and clues. Long John Silver doesn’t have an exact analogue, but his surprisingly complex parental feelings come through with found-family bonds as well as a wild ride of birth-family feelings, and a fraught lesbian love interest.

Once & Future by Cory McCarthy, A.R. Capetta (Set in Space, HM)
This time, King Arthur is a queer teenage girl on the run from the big bad capitalist Mercer Corporation – in space!
In this re-telling, the characters are aware of the King Arthur story as a myth from Old Earth, but when they find themselves re-incarnating the well-worn pattern, they don’t seem to recognize it beyond the magic sword and Ari’s renewed determination to be a hero. Merlin has lived through every iteration, and has his own interests at play. Our heroes spend a fair bit of time in their space ship or on planet-sized space-stations, though it may be pushing the rule to say it’s 50% actually in space. This is a YA book and it definitely reads that way, but it’s fun. I thought the “Renaissance Faire Planet” was a bit of a stretch and the big bad was almost a caricature of every evil empire, but if you can look past a bit of cheesiness, there’s plenty of sci-fi action, a quick pace, and some intrigue under the surface.

The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid (Standalone, HM)
Hungarian and Jewish folklore plus the early spread of Christianity weave together to create a world where magic manifests differently depending on your religious tradition, the Christians are ardent new converts in charge of a poor besieged country, and persecution abounds.
The first person perspective came with a lot of (justified) rage and some pretty violent moments, but I found Évike’s voice to be frustratingly naïve at times. The pacing was uneven, and with a lot of elements in play the story was lacking cohesion. I felt okay on the enemies-to-lovers trope in this one. Overall, this book was redeemed for me by the imagined folk stories woven in, and the heart-warming moments spent in the Jewish community. (I forget the actual names of the religions in the book, but they’re pretty obvious stand-ins.)

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Anti-hero, HM)
This time, Romeo and Juliet are in rival gangs in 1926 Shanghai, but their teenage romance is already dead from betrayal at the start of the book and a strange madness is devastating the city they struggle to rule.
I usually read-read, but this one I listened to and I loved the narrator! I had a few hang-ups on Juliet as a character (though perfect anti-hero material). Which was tough since she got of lot of screen time, but thankfully we also got Roma and some absolutely wonderful side characters, including a trans woman and a refuses-to-admit-it gay couple. There were some moments of lovely prose, plenty of action, and all the jostling factions in the city were well-balanced in the narrative. First of a series, I definitely want to pick up the second one soon.

All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter (Book Club, HM)
Drawing primarily on Irish folklore, this is the story of a girl who wants to escape her family obligations - ones that come with generational trauma and greed.
It’s a little hard to talk about this one without spoilers since there are basically three distinct sections and each could almost stand as a story on its own, but each depends on the earlier one. Another angry woman in this one, taking matters into her own hands and trying to break spells, break open dark family secrets, and get free of men who are trying very hard to be in charge. I liked the gothic atmosphere, the prose, and probably the middle journey section with fairy-tale creature encounters was my favorite. The family history is also told in mini fairy-tales throughout. The ending fell a bit flat, and I didn’t really connect to the main character, but neither of those were deal-breakers for me.

Spear by Nicola Griffith (Cool Weapon, HM)
From the King Arthur mythos, the story of Percival and the quest for the holy grail, but Percival is a supernatural queer woman who lives in sixth century Wales when the pagan gods still have power.
Novella. The story opens slowly and with some very poetic prose to start Peretur’s early life in the wilderness with her mother – a mythic feeling that I fell hard for right off the bat. And yet it also felt very much a story from history – the details of the setting showed the research Griffith put in. I wish it were just a touch longer to give some more room to the relationship developments that get packed into the back half of the book. But the interweaving of historical details, tidbits from myth and story, and imagination was so flawless that this re-telling feels like it could be the "true" history of the story-figure. Even including the gender flip - a skillfully handled "woman dresses as a man to be a knight" trope that works even better when the woman is queer.

Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny (Revolution/Rebellion, HM)
On a distant planet in the far future, the original colonizing crew have set themselves up as gods, specifically taking on the roles of the Hindu pantheon. One member heartily disagrees with how the rest are running things.
The prose in this one was a little tough and I’m pretty sure the style is a deliberate choice to make this book feel more akin to reading a religious text. And as a play off of Hesse’s 1922 Siddhartha, since they share the same main character. But some of it may also simply be because it was written in 1967. Still, the content is intriguing. The struggle is between the immortal gods who like being the ones with all the advanced tech (including re-incarnation to transfer themselves into new bodies), and the one who thinks this is some kinda bullshit, why make the inhabitants here go through the dark ages when they could have medicine and electricity now. The premise and watching it play out is the interest here, not so much any emotional investment in the characters.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White (Name in the Title, HM)
Still asking, “who is the monster?” and giving the same answer even more definitively than the original, this is a re-telling of Frankenstein from Elizabeth’s POV with some distinctive twists.
In 2022 I did the Dracula read-along and then promptly decided it was finally time to do Frankenstein as well. Which meant I could now read re-tellings of these classics. Elizabeth, when you get to hear her side, turns out not only to be independent-minded, but also a remarkable anti-hero character trying desperately to maintain the only stability she’s ever known. Though there are a lot of grim happenings and emotional abuse, this version has more hope for humanity than the original (which, imo, has almost none). Also, unlike narrator Viktor, Elizabeth doesn’t make you hate her guts regularly; she’s just trying to survive. The prose was the weak point in this one, especially coming off Mary Shelley, but not detrimentally so.

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher (Author Uses Initials, HM)
Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” leaves plenty of room for embellishing and this novella does so perfectly with nightmare fungus, more rounded-out characters (including a non-binary protagonist), and horrifyingly possessed creatures.
Alex is a rational narrator, the best kind for encountering increasingly creepy phenomena. Even with the addition of a no-nonsense mycologist and a competent American doctor, the atmosphere of oppressive, inevitable horror from the original short story suffuses this novella. There certainly are rational lines of thoughts to follow to unravel the mystery of the Ushers’ illnesses, but that doesn’t stop each revelation from setting everyone on edge and fearing madness of themselves. Gothic. Horror. Perfection.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan (Published in 2022, HM)
The Chinese story of Chang’e is the basis for this re-telling, but this focuses on her daughter and starts after the original stories end. Xingyin’s quest is to obtain freedom and forgiveness for her mother’s actions that gained her goddess status, but exiled her to the moon.
The world building of the Celestial Kingdom was a highlight of this one for me since I’m not super familiar with the Chinese pantheon. The story itself relied on some classic YA tropes (including a love triangle, one of my least favorites) and I found the narrator’s voice somewhat simplistic. She’s also a very emotional character, which at times was endearing and at others frustrating. Wise, peaceful dragons do make an appearance, though, and there’s some good political intrigue and a few unforeseen twists. An entertaining read overall, and there’s set-up for the second book, but this one wrapped up nicely enough and I’m not feeling pressed to read the second one right away.

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo (Urban Fantasy, HM)
The Great Gatsby, but from Jordan Baker’s perspective and she’s a bi Vietnamese adoptee in a New York where magic makes all the parties more dazzling.
It’s hard to like any of the characters in the Gatsby story, but Jordan Baker as narrator certainly gets more sympathy from me in this go-round. Raised in a rich white family, she carries internalized racism with her, and yet struggles against it every day in a country that is trying to enact a law that will force her to leave. Where the original story condemns classism and unbridled ambition, this story expands its criticism to America’s long history of excluding people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. The prose is gorgeous, and where it overlaps with original scenes it dovetails perfectly. The magic adds an extra shimmer to this story, but doesn’t outshine the character work. I hope this one gets added to curriculums to pair with the original.

Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen (Set in Africa, HM)
Inspired by West African mythology with the Little Mermaid for some plot points. Simi was a human who became a Mami Wata and is struggling to fit into her role bringing home the souls of those who died at sea. One decision endangers all the Mami Wata and sends her on a quest with a boy that will entangle her with the gods and other legendary creatures.
This story is chock full of magical beings, young adults attempting to navigate dangerous situations as well as their relationships, and quests of mythic proportions. The dark underbelly of the story is the destruction of West African communities as colonizers take their people into slave ships. Though tragedy runs alongside the story, our heroes mostly manage to stay one step ahead of the worst outcomes. The quest did some meandering, and characterizations were a bit uneven, but I think it really came together in the latter half. The main plot wraps up well, but makes set-up for the next book clear and I do intend to get to it eventually.

A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger (Non-human protagonist, HM)
With roots in Lipan Apache storytelling traditions, this is the story of a cottonmouth snake and a human girl whose worlds run in parallel, but become entangled as they try to save friends and family from existential threats.
This technically has two protagonists, but the snake is the one whose chapters are in first person and the human’s are in third person. This also would have been great for the hard mode BIPOC author square since the author is Lipan Apache. I absolutely loved everyone in this story. Nina is an intrepid modern girl and a loner, but with strong family ties; and Ollie is a homebody snake setting out to make his way in the wide world. The friends Ollie makes help him to discover his own bravery, and they are a delightfully colorful bunch of creatures! Nina is trying to help her grandmother and unravel the mysteries of their family’s past and possible connections to the animal people. Read this story to be filled with the love of friendship and family, and hope in the face of climate change and social media ills.

Fractured Fables: A Spindle Splintered & A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow (Timey Wimey, HM)
Zinnia Gray’s illness means she likely won’t live past 21, but when she falls into a Sleeping Beauty parallel universe, she might be able to at least save someone else from that fate. In book two, she’s dealing poorly with life in the “real” world, but busting out into a new fairy tale multi-verse (Snow White’s), and finding even more complications in the re-tellings there.
I read both novellas currently out in this series, and our hero does a fair bit of jumping around the fairy tale multiverse which makes it clear that time doesn’t run evenly across it all. It’s not really the focus, but it’s there, and it does affect a couple plot points. I think Alix Harrow read the same book I did about disability in fairy tales (Disfigured by Amanda Leduc) and took it to heart to create her hero in this contemporary fairy tale take. Zinnia’s chronic illness is both from an industrial accident and an embodiment of a fairy tale curse. These books don’t take themselves too seriously, but do handle disability and the emotional impacts that come with it pretty well, I think. Disney’s re-telling style features in book one, and book two gets some darker, more horror-esque takes.

Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones (Mental Health)
The re-telling of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth you didn’t know you needed with extra depth from Germanic folk roots and a little Hades-Persephone flavor. Set in early 19th century Bavaria, protagonist Liesl is a composer stuck helping run her family’s inn; in the woods, Der Erlkönig (the Goblin King), may be a relic of a pagan past, but that doesn’t stop him from meddling with her heart and her family members.
Liesl is bipolar and her brother (prodigy violinist) has anxiety and (in book 2) severe depression. Her father is an alcoholic. The family member who gets stolen and must be retrieved is her beautiful sister, the life of the family. Liesl’s wild up and down swings are on full display when she enters the realm of the Goblin King and is trying to navigate her relationship with him, her relationship with her music, and her love for her family. This is an emotional book and you will be angry at almost every character at some point. But it’s also heartbreakingly beautiful. The romance sizzles; it’s unhealthy and you want them to fix it. It’s probably not a book for everyone, but I spent a fevered day and a half devouring it. For extra doses of struggling with mental health, sobbing, and musical composing, read book two – Shadowsong.

In the Shadows of Giants by Lazette Gifford (Self-published, HM)
In the far future, the Norse pantheon ends up pitted against the Chinese pantheon and an elder god in a potential new Ragnarok with Loki trying to avoid the mishaps of the last one – in space!
Loki gets some good character work in this book, but other characters are a little light on depth. Though Loki is the main focus, I liked that we got some chapters in the Chinese pantheon as well, getting some insight into the politics of the situation from their perspective – and not everyone in their pantheon is on board with the way things are going. Loki is also not really convinced of teaming up with the rest of his own pantheon again either, but he still has a few good ties there and room to mends some relationships. This wasn’t a stand-out novel for me, but neither do I have any strong complaints. It’s a solid sci-fi-fantasy mix, good prose, and well-paced plotting.

Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste (Runner-up, HM)
It’s 1967 in San Francisco and Lucy (from Dracula) and Bertha (from Jane Eyre) are the titular reluctant immortals trying to keep their tormentors from destroying more lives.
This seems like it could be an action-packed super-powered immortal battle, but instead it’s the mundanity of simply surviving as an undead being, escalating slowly into a horrifying body count. Obviously I had to read this after finishing the Dracula read-along. The tone is such a contrast! Where Dracula’s heroes struggle nobly against the darkness, this version is full of quiet desperation and bleakness more fitting as the successor to Jane Eyre. As the action ramps up in the last third, it plays out more like a contemporary horror film, including a strange liminal space in the afterlife and scenes of a modern mansion filled with the decay that the undead bring. The drug haze of California in the 60’s suffuses the story. I’m not entirely convinced this was a re-telling we needed, but I’m also not mad about it.

Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel (BIPOC author)
Kaikeyi is only briefly in the Hindu epic The Ramayana, but her “wicked stepmother” action sets the plot of it in motion. In this novel, she is given a voice and a backstory and a complex world she must navigate as a woman who wants more independence not only for herself, but for all the women of her country.
The relationship building in the latter half is one of the highlights of this book. It’s helped by some magic, but Kaikeyi puts in the work to build bonds of love and mutual respect in the royal household where she is youngest of three wives. Rama (her step-son) is the main character in the original epic (a god incarnated to vanquish evil forces), and so the reader is clued in early that disaster will befall the family because of a conflict between Kaikeyi and her husband and Rama; the threat of that tragedy seeps into even the happy parts of the story. Kaikeyi is a champion of early feminism in this telling, but she’s still human with plenty of flaws and struggles and imperfect vision. I found this book to be a bit of a slow build to connect with characters, but by the end I was absolutely tearing up. A powerful telling.

Malice by Heather Walter (Shapeshifters, HM)
In this Sleeping Beauty re-telling (perhaps prequel), the villain is not yet the villain – though society certainly treats her as an outcast – and a forbidden love is blooming.
This is a coming of age story for an already young adult character. Alice wants to be accepted (and loved), proving she’s not the evil pariah society thinks she is, but she also wants to escape the role she’s forced into. The build-up of tension between her warring desires is well done. As she discovers her true powers (spoilers since I used it for the shapeshifting square!) she’s put even more at odds with the establishment, and yet her growing love for Princess Aurora gives her hope for a more idyllic outcome than the escape she’s trying to plan. This was another enjoyable but not necessarily a stand-out read for me. Excellent character work for the protagonist and a slower pacing, but never felt like it was dragging. I will definitely read book 2 since this one ends with a bang.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (No Ifs, Ands, or Buts, HM)
This book mushes up elements from Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, and probably others, and spins a whole new story with Persian flair. A poisonous princess is kept hidden away, but when knowledge of her curse comes from a demon, her decisions will have far-reaching consequences for her whole family and the question of who to trust becomes thorny.
This was another one where the protagonist is striving to be a good person, caring for her family, and yet she understandably wants to escape her curse and is maybe willing to do some questionable things to make it happen. It’s hard to keep being good when, even though you are loved, you can’t touch anyone and have to live in a gilded cage. This story took a lot of twists and turns, including betrayals of all kinds. The romance elements were laced with emotional tension, but kept sexual feelings to a bare minimum. I felt this could have used a bit of plot streamlining, but I liked the Persian-inspired world, the overall arc of the story, and I felt it wrapped up well for a complex stand-alone.

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten (Family Matters)
I thought this would be primarily Little Red Riding Hood, but it’s got a huge helping of Beauty and the Beast and a dose of fairy tale sisters tropes as well. Red is the sister that will be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wilderwood in hopes of the gods’ return. Turns out, that whole Wolf and Wilderwood thing is really complicated.
This has a lot of elements that I tend to look favorably on – a broody love interest, a magical forest, sibling bonds – but it didn’t quite pull together for me in this book. Both characters in the romance got good development and their choices did make sense for who they were, but it was a very frustrating one to read and caused a lot of drag in the middle. The sibling relationship was much better and the sister who gets to become queen has a wonderfully tragic arc in the name of saving her lost sister. The forest itself and the religion/magic that goes with it don’t get a ton of satisfying explanation, but that’s partly due to everyone actually struggling to figure out how it works. It gets an A+ for creepy atmosphere, though! Imagery from Grimm’s more grim tales abounds and I appreciated the slight edge of horror that creeps in. Not super likely to pick up book 2.

I’ve done a terrible job being concise here, so I’ll try to do a really quick run-down on the short stories. I just listed the first collection on my official bingo turn-in to make it easy, but I like being able to fill in all the slots in my spreadsheet, so there are five things here. Hopefully someone has made it this far down – if so, thank you for reading!

The Bloody Chamber & Other Stories by Angela Carter (collection)
The titular story is one of the better ones – a re-telling of Bluebeard. Covering the classics of western European fairy tales, this collection features a lot of liberated sex with a 70s feminist lean (publication date: 1979). Girls and beasts are the big theme. There were a few excellent ones and several that left me going “but why?”
The Bride of the Blue Wind by Victoria Goddard
Closer to a novelette, but that gave this story room to get some solid world-building in. Bluebeard again, but with Bluebeard being a djinn sort of character. I loved the trader communities and desert setting and the family dynamic with the wife’s sisters.
Tales of Old Gods & New by Kate MacLeod (collection)
This collection had two specific re-tellings: another “Norse gods in the far future” re-telling which was also a sci-fi survival story, and an African inspired goddess trying to escape the cycle of her story. These were two solid ones, some of the other in the collection I felt were unfinished scribbling thoughts for novel-sized stories.
Hunting Monsters series by S.L. Huang (2 short stories, one novella)
This collection mashed up eastern and western settings and stories, including Red Riding Hood, Beauty & the Beast, the Legend of the White Snake, and Hou Yi the Archer. The main characters of the novella are middle-aged women long past the prime in which their original stories took place and I liked that take a lot. The short stories focus on a daughter and deal with culture clashes and parent-child tensions.
A Cathedral of Myth & Bone by Kat Howard (collection)
The feature in this collection is a novelette of the King Arthur story set on a college campus with grad students who are themselves studying the mythos of King Arthur. Most of the other stories in the collection take inspiration from saints’ lives or myth and folk tale tropes (or the concept of storytelling itself) and play with them in new settings. I found a lot more hits than misses in this collection.

2023.03.29 05:17 dumbwaeguk Creating a modern collection of tiki drinks

Hi everyone. Inspired by some more recent approaches to tiki mixing, and in light of the relative age of the most solid and memorable tiki cocktails, I'm interested in experimenting, crowdsourcing, and crafting a new cocktail collection that represents the tastes, market, and cultural values of 2023.
I'm aware there are always modern approaches to tiki, but they are diffuse, loosely organized, sometimes proprietary, and when organized neatly--such as Beachbum or Minimalist--tend to revive and reuse Vic and Beachcomber era ingredients rather than utilize more contemporary ones. So here are the ideas and philosophies I want to explore while building a new tiki cocktail compendium:
Previous cocktails have been dominated by Caribbean rum, with the occasional gin or brandy. Modern cocktails can make use of modern, tropical, and Asia-Pacific spirits such as tequila, mezcal, coconut brandy, shochu and jeontong-soju, rice wine, Southeast Asian rum, infused rums, plum spirits, Martinique shrubb, Taiwanese and Japanese whiskey, palm spirits, and perhaps a bit more sherry, port, and regional beers.
Original tiki drinks were often advertised as "a mix of exotic spices and tropical fruit juices," but often ignore what the tropics and Pacific are producing. Tiki has traditionally mostly relied on almond, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, orange, and the occasional passion fruit. We can show better respect for local produce and tastes by utilizing the ingredients of modern bartenders in the regions formerly appropriated by the orientalist approach of the first tiki wave. We have access now to mangoes, mangosteens, lychees, longans, soursop, durian, jackfruit, pandan, ube, dragonfruit, a range of melons, banana leaf, heirloom bananas, pomelo, yuzu, chili, fermented coconut, tepeche, cacao nibs, rose water, all kinds of berries, flowers, and teas. Why is orgeat rarely made with pecans or macadamia nuts? Where's the coconut sugar? Why not add tea or sichuan peppercorn to falernum? Obviously many bars are doing this, especially in Southeast Asia, but these recipes never seem to become textbook tiki canon and, again, are often diffuse and proprietary.
Not everyone in the world can get a bottle of Fee Bros 6 year limited edition gold orgeat or Pablo Escobar 21 year pot-still demerara rum. While frozen fruits can be surprisingly accessible outside of the tropics, specialized spirits are much harder to get. Recipes should make the most of Plantation or Evan Williams and be designed more around the general spirit than a very specific flavor obtained by a mix of three or four specific labels. Substitutability is key here, and posting results of experiments is very helpful.
Ideally this would involve citing blogs where you got the recipes, bars that inspired the recipe, and putting together a very user-friendly PDF or Wiki (or both) with hyperlinks, free and easy to download. This would be a community project rather than a business pursuit.
There will always be tried and true ingredients and formulas, but we can do more than shuffle them around. We can go further and try new permutations of fruits, spices, and liquors to produce something more fresh and creative while maintaining the adventurous and spicy spirit of the original tiki revolution. The idea here is to produce new mixes while also introducing new audiences to fan favorite contemporary drinks.
Let me know if you are interested in contributing to, or at least perusing, this new compendium. It will cost you nothing to do either, so I will offer some initial recipes once I put them together.

2023.03.29 05:06 Interstates-hate Unpopular opinion? Please tell me it gets better

I’ve been watching for a few months now. I had started telling everyone I know that this is the funniest show I have ever seen. I have never laughed as hard at bird lawyer, and the cereal defense, Wade Boggs challenge etc. But around season 12, it got blah. I don’t laugh much anymore and sometimes I’ll even skip through entire episodes when it isn’t on brand. I love the gang when they do a good scheme, and in the later seasons that happens less and less. I’m on season 13 now. Please tell me they get back to basics! I really don’t like the whole Mac being obsessed with Dennis joke. It falls flat to me. In the beginning, they were more like bros. Sure Mac hero worshipped Dennis but it wasn’t the only gag. I imagine it gets stale writing the same old jokes, but I miss a consistently hilarious season. Don’t get me wrong there are still some bright points but I want the old gang back 😭😭

2023.03.29 04:58 Spaghetti_Mercury My roommate's telepathic octopus sent me a letter (Part 2)

Hi there. I’m frank, and if you read my previous post, you’ll know that something very bizarre happened to me recently. Well, I should say it happened to my roommate more so than me. If you haven’t read my previous post, you can read it here.. This one will not make sense if you haven’t read the previous one, "My new roommate's octopus is telepathic".

https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/11tcjl1/my_new_roommates_octopus_is_telepathic/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
(Sorry the link isn't fancier)

Now that you are all caught up with the craziness I witnessed, I'd like to fill you in on a new development. Ever since Larry/Mike left, I have felt very lonely. It’s depressing to realize that an octopus was my only friend, but that’s where I’m at. Life has felt a lot more boring and monotonous. That’s why I was ecstatic when I got a letter in the mail the other day.
The letter was addressed to me from someone named Larry Michaels. It took me longer than I’d like to admit to realize that it was from the octopus. As he was leaving, he told me his name was Larry. I don’t know if that’s true, but I don’t know any other Larrys. The last name being Michaels makes sense because Mike was the name of my former roommate whose body Larry had occupied.
I guess it’s a little cruel to take the man’s body and his name, but he did keep Larry in a tank for years without letting him out or giving him any sort of attention or stimulation. I’d be pissed too.
Either way, I was pretty certain the letter was from Larry and after reading it I was pretty positive. Unless I completely blacked it out, there weren’t any other octopuses I had established a friendship with..
I’m going to share the letter verbatim. Larry has been very busy in his new body. I’ve been busy myself though. I don’t like admitting it but I sold a few of Mike’s things assuming he wasn’t going to be needing them anytime soon. To this point, not a single person has called or come to the house looking for him. Either Larry tied up those loose ends or Mike didn’t have many people in his life. It’s hard to say. We weren’t very close.
Anyway, I sold the klonopin in Mike’s drawer to a neighbor. I dumped the roofies because… They’re roofies. There’s no good reason to have them and I don’t want to put them in the hands of another pervert. I just flushed all but one down the toilet. I took the one with some wine just to see what it was like. I don’t recommend it.
About a week after Larry/Mike left, I told the landlord. I didn’t want him to expect me to pay Mike’s half of the rent. It wasn’t long before I was informed that someone else would be moving in.
The new roommate's name is Oliver. He goes by Ollie. It’s only been a few weeks, but he seems like an all right roommate. He’s pretty quiet but he keeps to himself. We’ve had a few short conversations but he seems like a lone wolf, aka the ideal roommate.
I put the rest of Mike’s stuff in storage aside from stuff we could use around the apartment. I got a new cord for the stereo system I had previously destroyed so Larry didn’t have to listen to country music. Work has been boring, but going well. Life isn’t too bad but after bonding with a telepathic octopus, everything else feels a little monotonous. So I was very excited to get a letter from Larry. I’m starting to dig the craziness. It makes life so much more interesting! Anyway, I’ll dictate Larry’s letter here….
Dear Frank,
I hope all is well and I hope you aren’t traumatized by what you witnessed before I left. Are you sure you though, you missed the most unpleasant part. The entry. It didn’t go very smoothly and he fought like hell. At one point I thought his sphincter was going to snap me in half. But like the little engine that could, I got up in there. You know that though. I’m writing to tell you what I’ve been up to since I left. Call it an update as well as a warning.
Now, I don’t want to alarm you. I am on your side and every octopus I’ve met knows that you’re one of the good people. There aren’t many but there are a few that we revere. The issue is that we aren’t exactly one unit anymore. I’ll explain what happened but essentially, we split into factions.
My first order of business after leaving was to free as many sea creatures from captivity as I possibly could. I went to aquariums, zoos, restaurants, and eventually tracked down an exotic animal smuggler and dismantled their operation entirely. I’m like the Harriet Tubman of octopuses!
The exotic animal Smugglers were a big find. I had freed some octopuses from an aquarium and they tipped me off about the operation. I helped my new friends find new shells. Those shells were the aforementioned animal smugglers. They were bad people.
I assure you that we haven’t caused any harm to good people, only people who harm us. These people had captured, killed, and sold everything from sea creatures to dogs to ivory. I’m not calling you dumb Frank, but in case you don’t know what ivory is, it’s like elephant tusks and rhino horns. They serve a purpose for the animal, but humans grind them up to try to get boners. I have advised my new companions to avoid taking good people like you as vessels, but the ivory boner people are fair game.
so before long, there were eight of us in human vessels as well as several we either hadn’t found bodies for. There were also a few who had no interest in taking a human shell. Someone joined us in the fight, and some headed back for the ocean to be free and to try to find their families.
Everything was going pretty well for a while. We had quickly taken over the animal smuggling operation. We followed the ladder all the way to the top and to the bottom, getting more cephalopods into human bodies in the process. We were able to liberate any animal that was brought to us and punish those who mistreat our kind.
There is a but coming. I’ll explain once I’m done laughing at that sentence.. Okay, I’m good.
We had liberated a lot of sea creatures in a very short amount of time and it started to seem like us taking over didn’t have to be a dream for our children. It could be a reality for ourselves. Humans aren’t able to wrap their minds around what we really are. By the time they do, we’re already up in there.
Still though, I believe strongly that not all humans deserve to lose control of their own bodies. If I didn’t feel that way I’d be as bad as the supreme court. Sorry, I’ve been getting into politics. It makes it a lot harder to like humans, but you keep me going Frank. You’re my Northstar. The reason that we aren’t killing humans indiscriminately. You should feel proud of that!
I’m getting off topic though. I’m not just writing this to keep in touch (although I do miss ya bud.) I’m writing to warn you about something very dangerous.. Jeff..
Jeff was among the cephalopods we freed from a restaurant. He’d been there for a while and witnessed unspeakable horrors. He watched helplessly as his peers were killed, cooked, and in some cases even boiled alive! It messed him up..
I tried to talk to him. I told him about good humans. I told him about you. It didn’t matter though. His hatred was too strong. I didn’t realize until he went on an absolute rampage..
He returned to the restaurant we saved him from in his new human form. You likely heard about it in the news.. It was a massacre.. He figured guns out very quickly and the human whose body he took had several. He left no survivors at that restaurant. Customers, employees, a guy stopping for a piss at the worst possible time..
His picture was all over the news. He was forced to exit the body he was using and find a new one. The others and I discussed trapping him and preventing him from taking another human host. Some felt that it would make us hypocrites. Others were just too afraid of Jeff. Once he got a new body, I knew that a power struggle was right around the corner.
I decided to confront him. He not only killed indiscriminately. He led the police to the warehouse we were using as a base of operations. It had belonged to the animal smugglers. It was not only a nice, large place for us to stay, but associates of the smugglers were still bringing us animals we could liberate. Jeff ruined that.
When I confronted him, it didn’t go well. I argued that while most humans suck, they aren’t all bad. Some are even pretty cool. Some are helpful.
He didn’t agree. He felt that humans were the most destructive force on the planet. I couldn’t really argue that, but I tried to explain that not all humans are alike. He didn’t care though. I’ve been motivated by survival. Jeff is motivated by revenge.
Our argument became physical and even though I could easily lie to you, I’ll be honest and tell you that I got my ass whooped. His vessel was much stronger than mine. If only Mike had done some push-ups instead of Jager bombs. If he got any exercise whatsoever outside of masturbation.
In any case, Mike’s body isn’t very tough. Jeff beat me up but we were eventually broken up by the rest of the group. We then held a vote. Me and Jeff essentially began campaigning against one another. We disagreed on the proper way to achieve our goals.
The vote was pretty split and we essentially decided to go our separate ways. We agreed to a truce, but Jeff and the others who went with him are very dangerous to you..
He quickly started finding new ways to get more cephalopods into more human bodies. He had the advantage of being completely ruthless. When I liberated animals, I used clever tactics and tricks to avoid violence. He simply kills anything or anyone that is in his way.
Jeff is amassing an army.. he’s moving very quickly and he sees every human as the same people who trapped him and planned to eat him. He’s like a.. racist. Well, a bigot? He thinks you guys are all the same.. and he wants you all done and he wants you all dead.
There are multiple reasons why I’m telling you this. The first is that you need to know that Jeff and his followers are a direct danger to you especially. You are the example I use to explain to other sea creatures that not all humans are evil. They have all heard of you and those who support me revere you. Unfortunately, the ones who follow Jeff are aware of you as well.. I just wouldn’t put it past Jeff to target you in order to hurt me..
I understand that this is probably alarming. We made a recent discovery though that can help you. The number of human beings being controlled by an octopus are rapidly increasing. Jeff is on a mission, meaning my group has to take over more bodies and recruit more cephalopods to make sure his group can’t overpower us..
I saved that prick from becoming someone’s half eaten dinner! Now I need to turn my focus toward preventing him from ruining everything we’ve worked for. We want eventual dominance of the planet, but not as antagonists. Jeff can’t see that he’s just as bad as the people who enslaved him. Unfortunately, he’s charismatic and brash. Several of the others found those traits endearing.
I’m getting sidetracked though. Point is, fuck Jeff! But also.. be careful. I expect them to try and find you. Very few of my new associates know where you live. Unfortunately, one of those associates has recently decided to follow Jeff..
We made a discovery though. I don’t know how none of us realized it earlier, but when we inhabit a human’s body, there is a noticeable change. Slits in the neck. They’re very small and resemble gills. Small gills though. Just a series of small openings that help us breathe.
Once we noticed the slits, we realized that we could easily identify whether a human was “inhabited”. We all have different ways of hiding the slits. Scarves, turtlenecks, bandanas, long hair, ect.
They aren’t very big, but once you notice them, you reallly start noticing them. Kind of like when I told you that you walk like a prostitute. It’s hard not to notice it everytime after the first time. You end up wondering how you never noticed it in the first place. Don’t sweat it though, bud. It looks good on ya.
To be clear. When I said don’t sweat it, I’m referring to your prostitute walk. When it comes to Jeff and his goons, sweat it. Sweat it hard! They are very dangerous. I’m so sorry that I put you at risk. I should’ve known better than to tell them about you. You were just the best example of good humans that I had. That’s a compliment inside an apology! A compoligy a complimentoligy. An apocliment? Either way, I’m sorry.
Before my group and Jeff’s group separated, we had a plan. We are going to take over the bodies of American politicians. We are going to run for office and make changes that will jump start our plans. We are going to be in charge of all the people without them even knowing that all their arguing and fighting amongst one another is really over a cephalopod who wants to destroy them.
It seems like a tough task but they’ve already been dumped down to an extent that all we need to do is piss off the bass we’re running for. It’s bizarre how the most dominant species on the planet is so simplistic when it comes to social and political issues. Literally all we have to do is pick a party and talk about how the other one is terrible and evil. Your politicians don’t even tell people what their plans are anymore. They just talk about how the other side is terrible. That’s easy.
It would’ve been easy. With Jeff involved, things have become much more complicated. It was only days after our separation that he had taken over a prominent politician’s body. I can’t say who, but they are one of the people who have announced they will run for president in 2024.. They’re Jeff now, and I need your help making sure that he doesn’t win.
(Larry told me which politician Jeff had inhabited. I’m not going to include it because people are very unlikely to believe me anyway, and I don’t want to have political arguments in the comment section. His letter continued..)
I’m writing this note because I miss my human buddy, but also to warn you. Jeff’s goons could target you to hurt me.. You need to be vigilant. You also need to vote in 24! If Jeff wins, he’ll start a war. He’ll fire off the nukes. In the short time we spent together, he shared how unhinged he really is.
You have to help stop him. I need you to campaign for me and my candidate. I need you going door to door and calling strangers. I need you to find any dirt on the human whose body Jeff is possessing that you can.
Make sure to watch for the slits in the neck as well. If an octopus in a human's body introduces themselves to you, they are one of Jeff’s goons. I will tell you if I’m coming for a visit and I plan to eventually, but stopping Jeff is paramount and it needs all of my focus and attention. If you see someone with slits in their neck, get away from them as fast as you can.
Once all my ducks are in a row, I plan to have a friend of mine get a place near you to help protect you from Jeff. I need to figure out who I can trust first, though. I’ve already had one Jeff supporter stayed behind to spy. We sniffed him out quickly but there could be more.
So in the meantime, keep your eyes peeled and your head low. I will be in touch very soon. Once we take control of your government, I will reward you for your friendship. I’ll hook you up with whatever you need. I just need you to help me get my guy elected.
In the meantime, watch for the slits. I know I’m repeating myself but it’s vastly important that you get the hell out of there if you see them. Do what you can to help my guy’s campaign. And don’t worry about the fact that you walk like a prostitute. Most people probably won’t notice unless it’s pointed out to them at which point they’ll never be able to see anything other than a crack whore coming their way when you’re approaching.
Take care of yourself, Frank. Our time is coming. I know we’re a separate species. I know that some of my relatives are a direct threat to you. We’re the same though. We are kindred spirits. When my fellow cephalopods and I run this country, I want you by my side. “Gooble gobble one of us!” Ha!
I realize that I’m rambling now. The main point is to watch out for Jeff’s goons and get as many people as you can to vote for my guy.
I will write again soon. Things are a bit crazy right now. I’d like to see you. I’m not too manly to admit that I miss you. It’s just dangerous until I take care of Jeff.. Fucking Jeff..
Anyway, take care of yourself and be careful. I’ll contact you again as soon as I can.
~Your old pal, Larry.
I was ecstatic to hear from Larry. I missed him. Our friendship was strange obviously, But it was still one of the most meaningful friendships I ever had. It was admittedly difficult to look past what he did to Mike. He claims he was a predator, but I can’t really be sure about that. Dude did have roofies though, so..
I received this letter a few days ago and have been trying to process what Larry wrote. I’ve become a bit paranoid and haven’t gone anywhere since I received it. Jeff or his goons could be anywhere. That’s assuming there is a Jjeff and it’s not just Larry messing with me or something dumb like that. I trust him though..
I don’t know why I do. I just do. When the election comes around, I will vote for his guy. I’ll try to assist him in any way I can. I probably won’t be able to look at people in general without wondering if there’s an octopus in there somewhere. That’s become a bit of a problem already. Now I know that there’s more of them so my paranoia will probably consume me completely.
I’ve decided that in the meantime, I’m going to try not to dwell on those thoughts. If Jeff is really trying to become the president, he won’t have time to deal with me.
I continued thinking that way for the next couple of days. I felt like everything was gonna be okay even though it didn’t really seem that way. I figured that I could just put it all out of my mind for the time being.
As I was just sitting here typing this up on my phone, my roommate, Ollie came in. Similar to when I lived with Mike, Ollie and I work separate shifts and rarely see each other. This was the one day of the week where we were both home at the same time.
As I was finishing typing up Larry’s letter, Ollie came and sat on the couch. Up to this point, we both kind of kept to ourselves while remaining friendly with each other. He seems more chatty right now..
He saw the name on the envelope. He asked who Larry was. I told him it was an old friend from back home. He asked what the letter was about and I came up with a weak excuse to avoid telling him. Something about a friend being depressed. I said it was private and I didn’t wanna share it with anyone.
He reacted strangely. He rolled his eyes and pretty much openly said that he didn’t believe me. He didn’t pry though. He asked if I could put the news on the tv for a bit. I asked him which channel and his answer wasn’t ideal. I won’t say which network this propaganda station was because I don’t want to say which parties Larry and Jeff are trying to infiltrate. Let’s just say that it was Jeff’s party’s station.
I tried to avoid rolling my eyes from the moment I turned it to that channel. It’s just become so ridiculous. They don’t even pretend to be news anymore. It’s blatant, transparent propaganda and hate fuel.
Maybe Larry can change that if his plan works out. Maybe he could present some of the division that is constantly pushed by today’s news stations on the pundits. The scary thing is that that likely isn’t the case regardless of who wins. Larry, Jeff, or another human president will probably just make things even worse.. A guy can hope though.
I’m trying to avoid the TV as I finish typing this up. As I got to thinking about political nonsense, my eyes started to wander and I noticed Ollie’s tattoos. I noticed them before and thought they were pretty cool but never asked about them. I assumed it would be something that could get us talking because I like tattoos and he’s covered in them.
When I asked power mode she was excited to show me. He had a full sleeve that continued up his neck all the way to behind his ear.
I should’ve looked sooner. I should’ve noticed it. My concern is he started showing me his tattoos. Almost all of them were sea themed. A kraken ripping a ship apart, several sea creatures, and a city underwater. Those were just a few of the tattoos that led me to the realization..
I’ll admit that they looked cool and were well done, but I couldn’t look past the sea theme and cities underwater that look like they’d been hit by a tsunami.
Then I saw the slits.. Ollie (if that’s his real name) found a clever way to hide his slits. They look like they are a part of the tattoo. I never noticed them even after reading Larry’s letter. Like I said, we haven’t spent much time around each other.
I froze upon this realization. This was clearly what Larry warned me about.. he was clearly a “Jeff” supporter.. He’s not on my side..
I have to admit, even though I considered Larry a friend, I'd been having nightmares where I saw him in Mike’s body again. Thinking about it freaks me out. I’ve convinced myself that Mike probably deserved it, but I don’t honestly know that..
I don’t know if anyone deserves that fate.. maybe I do for enabling this all to happen. I’m really not as nihilistic as Larry thinks. I don’t want humans taken over by octopus people. I just don’t know if it’s any worse than what’s going on in the world lately.
What I do know is that the idea of what happened to Mike happening to me shakes me to my core and I’m now sitting next to a potentially innocent person suffering the same fate as well as the angry, parasitic creature responsible for it. Not only that, but if Larry is telling the truth, then he’s here for me..
I tried to continue complimenting his tattoos without revealing what I just realized. I tried to act normal and avoid being suspicious. Something about the look in his eyes made me feel like he knew, though.
There was a pause after I rambled a little where I felt certain that he was about to reveal himself and attack me. Instead, he asked if I wanted a beer. I said yes and he headed to the kitchen and grabbed some.
I’m posting this now in case he knows that I know. Assuming I still have control of my own body, I will update soon. Until then, wish me luck. Keep a lookout for people with slits on the side of their necks.. Oh! And vote for Larry!
I’m going to post now but Ollie just walked back in with beers. The first thing he said was “who are you planning on voting for in 24?”
I don’t know how.. but I completely forgot that they can read minds.. He knows.. He knows that I know.. Man, we really don’t stand a chance.. I just hope Larry wi.. changes his mind! It’s time for a change! It’s time for a new world! So come 2024, vote Jeff!

2023.03.29 04:57 JustinSol2012 Why is there a decline in viewership of SCP content on Youtube?

Recently 2 of my favorite SCP content creators , SCP illustrated and The Exploring Series have said there taking a break from SCP content due to low viewership and the YouTube algorithm not supporting these kinds of content the same way they have in the past. TES even showed a chart showing the decline in viewership in not just his channel but other famous SCP content creators like TheVolgun. Why is that, I understand trends come and go but SCP is always updating and newer writer are always coming up with something new. Has another form of Horror entered the zeitgeist? is the era SCP slowly coming to an end?

It works incredibly well, I went camping and had absolutely no service on my phone and the truck wifi worked phenomenally, not to mention I can leave it on for long periods with people being only briefly disrupted by the engine (I have a hybrid)
200$ for 12 months of unlimited data, and access to the RIDE app by warner bros giving you free access to their movies and tv shows making road trips and camping a little more entertaining.
Worth it if you travel to spots you don't have cell service in/ work in the field.

2023.03.29 04:32 Blakwhysper The conclusion of the Phyrexian story arc is a terrible let down to an amazing build up.

Just speaking for myself here, but the phyrexian story arc was one of the best concepts they have done.
The phyrexians went from ominous, to dangerous, to flat out nightmare fuel. The helplessness felt, the body horror, the inevitability of a single drop of glistening oil, of loved ones returning to try and bring you into the fold… I don’t think I could have asked for a better villain.
The amount of time and effort that went into building up to March of the Machine with card and world design, lore, story writing. Like they incorporated plot elements from the collapse of Serra’s realm into this storyline for heavens sake!
-they compleated Tamiyo- it was brilliant chaos!!! No one was safe! Ajani was a sleeper agent! Beloved characters were DYING or even worse… incorporated into the machine. I was invested! I have never seen the fate of the entire multiverse look this dire. I remember being frustrated I had to wait a day to find out what happened next.
Every plane was being completely overwhelmed. They were losing…. Until suddenly they weren’t. Episode 7: Divine intervention… and even with archangel Elspeth, it wasn’t enough. This is where they completely dropped the ball.
In the space of 2 chapters, it went from the most dire, to laughably murdering the phyrexians. The Praetors were THE most dangerous and powerful Phyrexians, and each one met not only ridiculously absurb endings, but fast enough to be a foot note. “Look behind you” to Vorinclex has to be the laziest and worst piece of writing I have ever read.
2 chapters, and all the praetors are gone. The oil is inert, the phyrexians are sleeping, and New Phyrexia is phased to an unreachable pocket dimension. The FINAL chapter spent more time detail showing how phyresis would be reversed than the entire last stand of the good guys in the previous chapter. A last stand that seemed ridiculously easy.
Kudos to the people that built New Phyrexia up. It’s a shame all that work was undone so quickly and awkwardly as it was.

2023.03.29 04:31 Sharinganprincess91 [F4M] Fandom Roleplay. Looking for more partners. (STILL looking)

Side note: I've added a password, so read carefully. If you message me WITHOUT the password, your messages are automatically IGNORED. tired of getting hit up with people who don't read 😒. It's ridiculous cause I've ignored 5+ chats cause none of them contained the password. Things are written for a reason.
Facts about me:
Rules:
1: if you don't like 50/50 mixture of sex scenes and story, don't bother hopping into my inbox. I'm fine with sex scenes, but when it's constantly back to back, the roleplay itself gets boring.
2: Be literate. No one liners. I like to write..it's annoying when I send a 2-3 paragraph response and I get 3 lines...just...no. I am not accepting people who are just starting out! If you aren't experienced in writing or roleplaying, kindly stay out of my inbox.
3: Be okay with playing canon characters. I'm mainly doing fandom roleplays right now and it's going to be Canon x my oc. No, I'm not doing double ups. Do not even ask, because the answer will be no every time. I do not give a shit if you think that makes me 'lazy' or 'selfish', if you've got a problem, you can simply ignore or block me. Commenting on my post to bitch and whine about me not doubling up will only result in me blocking you. The ONLY time I'll double up, and if I'm confident enough, I'll only do female characters. I suck at males. Got a problem? Not my issue. Block and move on.
4: Roleplay in third person. I can't and won't adapt to first. Don't even bring up the idea of you playing first person and me playing third. Believe it or not, I've been asked this twice and that is just a hell no for me. The only time I do first, is when I'm writing into my book.
5: if you don't know how to share ideas, then don't bother messaging me. I'm tired of carrying the story when the other person doesn't help. If you've got ideas, then PLEASE speak up! Your opinion on the roleplay matters too! I'm an easy going person, and easy to get along with (dispite my rules).
6: DO NOT control my character. I control what she says, does, hears, sees, ect. I don't control yours, so don't control mine. HOWEVER, if it's highly necessary and needed, then run it by me first and ask me. Just leave me some wiggle room so I can make a decent response. Failure to comply by this rule, results in immediate drop of the rp.
End Note:
Yes, I've updated my rules just a tad. I do not care if it makes me sound mean or rude, because I'm neither of these things. I'm just tired of putting these rules down for a specific reason and they go ignored because I can tell when someone hasn't read them, and lied about it. I'm just trying to get my point across and roleplay. I'm a very easy going person who loves to make friends on the side (which I've somewhat given up on making friends...only a selective few have actually gained my friendship).
Do not hop into my inbox with a simple 'hey' 'hi' 'sup', etc and for God's sake, don't message me with a 'rp?'and proceed me to flash me with your talliwhacker. I promise you, you'll get your feelings hurt and I'll be here laughing at ya 😂. Nobody wants a peen on their screen. Do not send me an image of your one eyed noodle. Thank you. The password is pineapple.

2023.03.29 03:47 vesta625 This Thing Between Us - Spoilers

Can anyone share their ideas on what exactly happened in the end of This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno?
SPOILERS AHEAD
The main points I am having trouble with are:
Was the demon always with Thiago passed down through generations or did the old tenant of the condo bring this through?
What’s with the scene when Thiago dreams of the condo and the white family hearing noises in the walls and hearing Thiago walk towards the father? It was an almost exact copy of Thiago’s experience and I cannot understand the meaning behind it. Was this to show Thiago that the cycle of the demon will continue through him to this new family or am I looking too hard at this moment?
How was Thiago able to kill the previous tenant of the condo and be at the train station when Vera was killed, essentially to “blame” for calling Esteban’s name, appearing almost just as he did at the end of the novel? Was this the demon disguised as Thiago while Thiago lived his normal life as he remembers it? Or was he possessed or in a dream like state that his physical self was there but he cannot remember?
I really wanted to give this book a chance, I was not expecting horror (my bad for not reading reviews) which I usually don’t go for because I find it cheesy.
I thought this would take a turn that Thiago did all these things to cause the deaths and that essentially everything was a delusion his mind created to deal with the guilt, but it took such a turn that I just don’t understand.

2023.03.29 03:42 REALCellWaters Some Posts (03 28 2023) - 2

Post 01:
I'm making jokes. While they SHOULD be funny. They're not funny because they're true and they know it. They wanted me to turn into a rage-filled lunatic because it'd erase what psychopaths they are. Instead, I decided to feel sadness and cry in a way that makes you feel sick.

Post 02:
I really don't want to think the HIV scare was intentional, but it was, it totally was. They were sadistically torturing me. Maybe I should just stop seeing my dad altogether. Don't react in a rage. Find good people who genuinely love and feel empathy, not psychopathic monsters.

Post 03:
Is everyone SADISTIC and EVIL as I suspect they are? Was everyone trying to kill me and turning me into a laughing-stock while doing it? It certainly feels that way. It feels like they're all sadistic torturers and monsters. Every single one if them. There's not one good person.

Post 04:
This is not only as bad as I suspect it is - it's a billion times worse. I'm not about to be the next Ryan Reynolds. Sorry to burst your bubble, Andrew. After 35 years of unimaginable horror, I'm not about to be partying and lying on the beach. The worst is yet to come.

Post 05:
I was ALREADY extremely self-conscious and felt damaged around women. Now I feel metaphorically HIV positive as well thanks to January 2020. Maybe I need to accept my entire life will be pain and suffering. I was doomed because my parents are sexual sadists and torturers.

Post 06:
It was actually Dr. Garrett who gaslit me into having the HIV scare, it wasn't my parents or Kelly. Why? I thought psychiatrists were supposed to help people?

Post 07:
Kelly Han was Yunjin Kim from the TV show Lost, she intended to give me the surprise of my life, but Dr. Garrett saw the writing on the wall because of what we were posting on social media and decided to give "John Lennon" an HIV scare because it would expose his negligence.

Post 08:
The HIV scare wasn't an accident, there was somebody who intended to give it to me, it was Dr. Garrett, as strange as it sounds. The monster was my psychiatrist who I trusted the most. It wasn't my parents, it wasn't Kelly, I was metaphorically raped by Dr. Garrett.

Post 09:
I need to remember I'm getting the bane of my existence "soupe du jour" about Dr. Garrett. The person responsible that I can blame all my problems on. There's not one SADISTIC PERSECUTOR. He wants to help me. The reality of shades of grey. There's lots of imperfect people.

Post 10:
I guess there are examples of evil psychiatrists, look at Dr. Eugene Landy harming Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. It could technically happen. It's very rare. Most people get into the profession of psychiatry to help people, not sadistically hurt people.

Post 11:
Whatever the truth is that's being kept secret, apparently it's VERY BAD and they're trying to keep me from killing myself at the moment by keeping me ignorant. As they say, ignorance is bliss. They're nefarious things I SUSPECT are true. Nothing is confirmed... Yet!

Post 12:
I was an accident that nobody cared about. I had no money. I was left in the dog pound. My father is successful and a jerk who was bullying me. They were turning me into a laughing-stock while they were all having the time of their lives. I basically died metaphorically.

Post 13:
I believe millionaires and billionaires were laughing at my suffering on social media. They knew and were associating with my father. They were all partying, and having fun, and didn't include me. ASSUMING the HIV scare was unintentional.

Post 14:
What happened to me is like the novel "Killing Mr. Griffin" by, Lois Duncan. They were all mocking and pranking me while getting duped by a psychopath. I'm going to Shoot The Moon like the card game Hearts by taking EVERYONE'S abuse and torture for 35 years.

Post 15:
ASSUMING the millionaires and billionaires didn't realize how bad it is, they're going to look like the satanic Corporate Ministry from the WWE now. But they knew. They just didn't expect it would get exposed and now they're just lying about their intent. It was always nefarious.

Post 16:
My parents are sexual sadists who were literally trying to kill me while creating the facade they weren't. I was being laughed at like I wasn't even a human being for 10+ years.

2023.03.29 03:38 Shad0w_King22 What is empathy ? And how do I know whether I have empathy or not?

Firs of all I am not asking for "Medical Advice." I just don't know what empathy actually means and want to clear that up.

I am a good person generally. I have never been in trouble with teachers and have never hurt anyone. Heck legend is that as a 3yr old I was bullied so much that my dad took it upon himself to teach me how to fight back. He told me to hit a pillow. I said "Why should I hit it?" So I would like to clear up that I am not some edgy boy trying to act tough. Also I do smile at cute videos about human beings being bros and do sometimes for a fleeting moment get agitated when I think on school shootings.

The problem is that recently I started reflecting on how I think and how I look at the world and noticed that I may not know what empathy is and thus I cannot figure out whether I have empathy or not. So please tell me what empathy is and whether I have it.

Background behavior:
  1. I care about my parents and siblings but when they get hurt I can't feel anything for them. I understand that it must be painful but if I had the option to like go in my room and play games without any negative repercussions I would rather do that. Like my Dad was in hospital for a few days. I felt that this was a bad situation but I was actually very relaxed the whole time.
  2. One thing I realized about my behavior was that when a relative is in front of me and I can talk to them I actually enjoy being in their company, but the moment they leave, I totally forget about them. Like my dad once said when I am talking to someone it feels like they are the most important person to me and as soon as they are gone I don't even care. Which is true to some extent?
  3. But I still love my parents and relatives. I've had dreams where they died and I cried the f out in those dreams so yea I do care about them enough to not loose them.
  4. But at the same time I often when they are in distress I sometimes find myself putting up and act that I am concerned.
  5. In 7th grade one of my classmates died. I honestly didn't feel anything other than surprise. And I was instead I was intrigued and surprised by the fact that students who were not very close to him were also crying and actually got yelled at a little by my best friend because he was also stressed by the news and I seriously failed in showing that I also cared about him because I "showed him my answers in a test once."
But even with all of this I do still get heartwarmed when I watch heartwarming videos and stuff.

One more thing I would like to add is that I often abide by rules everywhere but it has never been a moral obligation thing and it's more of the fact that I don't ever want anyone ever thinking that I am a bad guy. I help kids because I don't wanna be labelled an ahole.

P.S. I almost always get jealous when my classmates do better than me because I feel the need to be superior to others.

So tell me is something wrong with me or am I just a rotten apple at the core?

Thanks

2023.03.29 03:33 SemiTranslucent 22 [F4R] WA / Online / Looking for some friends, Movie buddy? Late night calls? Company?

Hi, I'm me and I need some friends.
I know this is a long read but bear with me! 🥺
It's not easy to post on here or to reach out knowing how I've been treated or how I've treated others in the past, even as of recent.
I have been on the run for a long time, trying to escape what I feel, who I am, what I see in the mirror, the things about me I'm not proud of, and the realization that I will never experience life in an easy way, at all.
All of this seems so pointless, I'm on Reddit, sitting in my closet, contemplating if I should post this, what the people I know would think of me or how badly they would cringe at my attempt to make friends of all things.
I wonder what my profession would be in another life, if I would have been a writer, a kindergarten teacher? I love writing, tho I don't think I'm very good at it and children.. they kind of scare me lol
It's hard to figure out what I even want in a friend, I think I'm intellectual but that's subjective, I am a very playful person but it's hard to be friends with people who are so playful I can't have deep conversations with them or talk about important topics.
I know I need someone who can set strong boundaries for themselves, I need to know where I stand with them and I need them to respect mine.
I need someone that can be understanding. I have BPD and anyone who knows anything about BPD knows it's not an easy disorder to live with in the slightest. I can be pretty impulsive and at times my brain becomes irrational or shuts down. It's a work in progress but I still have a long way to go.
I need someone that can joke about things, even the hard things, sarcastic banter, lots of giggles and sillyness.
I would hope to find someone I can watch movies with, comedies, horror, tv shows, someone I can play video games with, Rocket league, Fall guys, Minecraft. You could watch me play sponge bob? 🤭
Maybe someone who is creative. A writer, singesong writer, builds things with wood or can draw. A painter? A person who's really good at doing puzzles.. lol I love jigsaw puzzles.
Someone to chat with me in my closet while I get over a meltdown or chill with me after I decide to erase my entire friends list. Someone who can help remind me that I'm not crazy and that I'm not a burden to them. It's embarrassing.
It's usually online but someone who likes cuddles or holding hands in a friendly platonic kinda way. Someone who will talk me into going on a scary rollercoaster who I can also sue when I fall off and... Nevermind. 😁
This is already such a long read and I'm terrified of what's to come. I don't know if I'll find any friends at all or if maybe nothing will ever feel good enough, if I'll like your voice or your eye color, your taste in music or in movies. I don't want things to crash and burn. I need stability for once.
Anyways. This kinda sounds like I'm looking more for a future partner than a friend lol. I do want my partner to be my best friend first tho.
I also really wanna call/hangout like once or twice a week if you can make some time.
Sooo I hope your braincells are still intact by the end of this, and if you do respond please leave me a like, a comment, and subscribe.. I'm joking haha umm tell me what we might have in common, if you're a silly goose or not and your favorite color. Go!
P.s. don't feed birds bread, it's bad for them.

2023.03.29 03:32 ThrowAbout01 Advice for Uploading Flipnotes Here for Preservation

I have a bunch of old Flipnotes on a SD card and I want to upload them somewhere where they can be preserved and shared.
Any advice on doing this in a safe way?
These were highly ranked Flipnotes that defined what Hatena was. From copying YTPs of the time to it’s more original and artistic content.
I have: Every version of 100% stickman fights I could find with different fights and different music
The Goomba Talk Show
EpicGuitar videos including their Portal 2 series
Daft Punk montages of Flipnote creators and characters (I can only see the Gizmo version on YouTube which I did not have saved)
The black and red Daft Punk Harder Better Faster flipnote that probably introduced everyone to Daft Punk
Fred videos
Mario Vs Luigi series
Weegee Horror Series included the original of an edited episode that replaced a cigarette with a lollipop

2023.03.29 02:48 Septapus007 School did an unannounced lockdown today, 1 day after Nashville

I work in a PreK through 3rd grade school. Like many of us, I was devastated by the school shooting in Nashville. Right before I left for work, I had the news on and watched video of the gunman shooting through the glass doors to gain entry. Bone chilling to think how ineffective any school safety measures are against a gun of that power.
The age of the victims was particularly disturbing to me in this shooting. Whenever it is elementary age children, there is just an extra level of heartbreak. And all three students who died were 9, the age of my youngest child. As I sat across from him at the breakfast table today, I felt the horror of what it would be like to send him to school and have him never come home again. The news this morning showed footage of some of the parents waiting outside the school to find out if their children had lived. Unimaginable horror.
So my emotions were pretty raw this morning when I went to work. At lunch, there was lots of talk among the staff about the shooting. Our fears. Our plans of what to do should we ever be confronted with a real situation. It was just a very uneasy day.
And then, today, of all days, my school decided to perform an unannounced lockdown. Normally, they announce “This is a drill” before executing a lockdown, but once or twice a year, they call a lockdown without announcing it’s a drill first. Which is always shitty. And always nerve wracking while we crouch in the corner and listen for gunshots.
Today, it was just too much. No announcement that it was a drill. A realistic lockdown without warning. A long one where they went to classrooms and rattled the locked doors pretending they were trying to get in. They actually came to my classroom twice, violently shaking the door each time.
And I sat there on the floor trying to keep my early childhood special ed students quiet while listening for gunshots.
By the time the drill ended, I was so rattled that I couldn’t even teach. Thank god it was close to the end of the day. I just put a video on and tried to pull myself back together.
It just seems so clueless or tactless or cold hearted to do an unannounced lockdown the day after a school shooting. I was sitting there wondering if this was a copycat attack. And I was regretting that my phone was across the room on my desk because I couldn’t check the news or contact my family or call 911 if needed.
And it’s ridiculous that as a preschool teacher that these are the things that I have to worry about when I go to work. I’m just so mad and upset and tired of the whole thing. And I want to go find my principal and scream “What the fuck is wrong with you?” for pulling this shit on us today of all days.

Years ago, I never thought that I'd say this, but with Warner Bros. Discovery and D.C. Studios disregarding Zack Snyder's vision for D.C.'s flagship superhero team on movie screens in favor of starting anew, and with Snyder now working at Netflix, it just seems like the logical answer to see his story continued. This includes not only Justice League Part Two and Justice League Part Three, but also David Ayer's Suicide Squad, the standalone Man of Steel sequels, Ben Affleck's The Batman, Wonder Woman 3, Green Lantern Corps, Zatanna, the Justice League Dark t.v. series, Harley Quinn vs. the Joker, The Trench, Black Manta, The Wonder Twins, The New Gods, Batgirl (before its revamp), Nightwing, Lobo, Cyborg, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Blackhawk, Strange Adventures, Plastic Man, Metal Man, Static Shock, Aqualad, Hourman, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and whatever sequels and spin-offs they could've gotten. When filmmakers have a vision for a story that they're trying to tell spanning multiple films they intend to make, it's not for any outside parties to tamper with or alter, no matter what the circumstances whatsoever. Any changes are only to be made under the filmmaker's approval, or if their vision evolves. And Warner Bros. Discovery just keeps giving both their middle fingers and crossing them into an X to both this rule and the most important rule of mass multimedia: GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!!!! Sure, they can accept or refuse funding the production and distribution of (a) film(s) or other releases, but to disregard and/or disrespect a filmmaker's vision for a multi-picture story on the big silver screen just to fit their own desires and bonuses simply for profit or whatever other reasons or excuses they can come up with is pitiful, selfish, bogus, and stupid. This malpractice is just simply unacceptable, and no better example of when a studio screws up like this exists than with how they viewed Zack Snyder's plans for a Justice League film trilogy. With Snyder now working at Netflix, and that company having acquired one of the visual effects studios that worked on the V.F.X. for Zack Snyder's Justice League, they seem like the logical answer to help see the rest of the man's vision fully realized. Unfortunately, though, the only problem is: with Warner Bros. Discovery as D.C.'s corporate parent, and given how well they've profited from D.C. over the decades, it's just not very likely that the two studios will settle on a deal to help Snyder finish what he started as the upcoming D.C. Universe franchise soon replaces the D.C. Extended Universe. They really should, though, given all of the aforementioned factors. If only they could strike such a deal to see Snyder's vision continued on 'flix as a separate timeline from the D.C.U., their upcoming replacement franchise for the D.C.E.U. Besides: Zack Snyder's Justice League was just the beginning of what would've been the epic war against Darkseid, D.C.'s equal to Marvel's Thanos. But if this is to become the future of how franchises and the visions of those who conceive them are going to be treated by studios, then maybe we should really just stop making movies and shows altogether. You all know my vote, so who else is with me? #SellSnyderVerseToNetflix. #SellZackSnydersJusticeLeagueToNetflix. #SellZSJLToNetflix.
The Justice League, to be expanded with such new members as Zatanna, the Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern John Stewart, Supergirl, Black Ligthning, Green Arrow, and Hawkgirl. (And hopefully, even the new Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing if the vision is updated).
