2023.05.31 12:37 fazzno Thoughts on a 21 RX350 Luxury

With the current volatility in the used/new market, I wanted to poll the Lexus community on whether this is a decent deal.
Looking at purchasing a 21 RX350 FWD w/ Luxury package - 13k miles, single owner in excellent shape. Fully loaded with Mark Levinson, triple beam, pano roof, HUD and an MSRP of $60.9k.
Asking price is $47k with a OTD price just a hair over $50k.
Car seems to be very well taken care of with a minor road rash on the drivers side wheel and small car seat indentation marks in the rear seat. Clean carfax with no accidents and no signs of any body work done to the vehicle. Purchased and serviced at the local Lexus dealership with the remainder of factory warranty still active.
Does the Lexus community think this is a decent deal or should I keep searching? Also considering a new 2023 Premium+ but current market has them in the mid to upper $50k range with few discounts in my area.
Thanks!

2023.05.31 10:00 Batmangoober Rep vs Retail Travis Scott Jordan 1 Low “Olive” (PK 4.0)

Rep vs Retail Travis Scott Jordan 1 Low “Olive” (PK 4.0)
DISCLAIMER
This post is purely for educational, QC, and legit checking purposes. This is not an advertisement, nor were the sneakers given to me for free for review. This batch is the 4.0 batch with "retail materials" purchased from PK. In the pictures, the retail is always on the right or on top. The retail is a size 13W while the replica is a size 11W.
Ordering
PK was, as always, extremely easy to order from. I simply texted her WhatsApp number and was quickly able to order the shoes. I received my first QC within 2 days; unfortunately, that pair got seized by U.S. customs but PK reached out to me before I even noticed and I received a free second QC in another 2 days. The sneakers were shipped by DHL, and I received them in 15 days to the East Coast. PK also included some free Gucci socks in the package, so that was cool. Overall I’d definitely purchase from PK again as her customer service was amazing.
First Impressions
For an immediate post release batch, these shoes are surprisingly accurate and the materials are pretty good quality. At first glance, I did not notice too many extreme differences. The minor differences and general assessment of the replica in comparison to the retail, however, are outlined below.
Reverse Swoosh
I know that everyone is pointing out how the replica suede is buttery in comparison to the dead suede on authentic pairs. However, my particular pair nailed the movement aspect of the suede pretty dead on, as there isn’t any excessive movement just like the retail pair. The primary difference really comes with the color of the suede, as the replica reverse swoosh is slightly lighter than the retail pair. I also feel like the stitching on the retail reverse swoosh is slightly more shiny than the retail, but this is not something that is noticeable in natural lighting. The shape of the reverse swoosh is pretty good, as well as it’s distance from the first shoelace eyelet.
Backside Swoosh + Cactus Jack Medial Text
The backside swoosh has the same pros and cons as the reverse swoosh; the color and stitching are slightly different colors but they nailed the dead suede and the general shape on the replica pair. The Cactus Jack medial text are in different positions, but this is likely due to the size difference between the replica and retail shoe. The biggest difference in the medial text is that the replica Cactus Jack text seems to be more glossy than the retail. Also, the stitching that goes through the medial swoosh and text takes a sharper 90° turn on the authentic pair.
Shape
The shape of the replica isn’t too bad, but I feel like there’s something off about it that I can’t quite put my finger on. Something in the proportions of the shoe feels slightly off, but if it is so minor that I can’t even describe it even with a retail shoe right beside it then it shouldn’t ever be an issue on foot.
Toe box
The toe box on the replica isn’t too bad, as it definitely has a bulge, but I feel like it does not round back as much as the retail pair does. I also noticed that the replica toe box is not as slim as the retail. The biggest issue, however, is the stitching that goes around the toe box as it appears to be much tighter on the retail pair than the replica. The replica stitching is thicker and more spaced out on the toe box.
Leather + Black Suede Paneling
The leather feels the same between the two pairs, but it is noticeably a brighter shade of white on the retail pair. When it comes to the black paneling, however, this is where the biggest difference of the shoes comes, as the two materials are entirely different. The replica is a smooth black suede, similar to what you would see on the reverse mochas. The retail, however, is a rough material that you can hardly call suede; in fact, it’s not a smooth material at all as it feels almost tumbled and rugged. In this sense, the replica kind of has a more premium feel as I personally prefer the soft finish of the black paneling. For legit check purposes, however, this is definitely something to look out for. You can visibly see this difference in the pictures, along with the color differences between the two materials. While the replica is a dark black, the retail is more ashy.
Heel “Air Jordan” and Smiley Face Stitching
Most retail Travis shoes have plenty of QC issues when it comes to the heel embossing, so there isn’t too much to look for here. However, I definitely noticed that the retail pair has tighter stitching on the smiley face along with a slightly different shape. The “Air Jordan” on the other shoe is pretty much identical, but I feel like the “Air Jordan” lettering looks bolder on the retail pair.
Midsole + Outsole
The midsole color on the replica is a slightly different shade than retail, but the difference is so unbelievably unnoticeable even when you have a retail pair to compare it to; if I did not know that replicas tend to struggle with the color of the midsole, I wouldn’t have even noticed. The outsole paint of the replica is clean just like the retail; and yes, my replica pair did pass the squeeze test.
Nike Air Tag + Cactus Jack Patch
I did not notice any issues with the front of the Nike Air tag, but the back “Nike and the swoosh…” text has a slightly different font in comparison to the retail; this is a bit tough to point out unless you have a retail pair to compare it to. The Nike Air tag is nice and close to the Cactus Jack tongue patch. The Cactus Jack patch is pretty much identical to the retail, but the replica stitching surrounding the Cactus Jack patch is less clean and compact. The Nike Air tag faces a similar problem, as the stitching is clearly not as clean and straight as the replica on the back of the tag.
Size Tag
The size tag lettering appears to be slightly bolder on the replica. The manufacturing dates also don’t match, but I guarantee this varies on retail between sizes.
Lace Bags
The lace bags have the same shape and packaging of the laces. The replica, however, is less compact and has 4 lines at the top of the lace bag while the retail has 5 lines. This is VERY nitpicky and really only useful for legit check purposes.
Box + Paper
The boxes are the same size, but they are definitely different shades both in the olive Nike text as well as the cream colored cardboard. The olive Nike paint also seems to be more matte on the retail box. The size tag on the box may be slightly bolder on the replica, but if it is then it’s so minor that the difference is pretty much negligible and could really only be used for legit checking purposes. On a similar note, the top of the inside of the box on my authentic pair has a stamped code on it. The pink paper in the box is definitely more waxy in the retail box; but once again, this is really only applicable for legit checking opposed to QC purposes.
Blacklight
I didn’t notice any difference between the two pairs under a blacklight. For this reason, I decided to not include any pictures with the blacklight.
Overall Rating
Take note of how all the differences I mentioned were either impossible to describe without a retail pair to compare it to or so minor that the difference is only useful for legit check purposes. With that being said, this is definitely a solid replica; I’d give it an 8.5/10 with the only setback being the material difference of the black suede. So should you buy now? Well that's completely up to you. As we all know, Travis replicas all eventually become essentially 0.99:1, but even at this point the differences personally do not bother me at all. For those of you looking to buy an authentic pair, there is no need to worry about purchasing from StockX/GOAT/eBay/etc. as the differences, while minor, are enough to distinguish a retail from a replica in professional hands (at least while comparing this particular batch to retail). For those looking to QC a replica, feel free to mention me in your posts, especially to those QCing any Travis 1s. With that being said, there is no need to ever worry about being called out in the real world with any of these top tier batches. Let me know of any other Travis shoes and batches you want a rep vs retail of! If you want any additional opinions or pictures, feel free to ask :)

2023.05.31 08:24 Pookias My (Very Long) First Impressions of the Alienware X16 - i9-13900HK + RTX 4090

I just recently got the Alienware X16 from Dell.com with the i9 and 4090, and I wanted to share my first impressions and experience as someone who has tried all 3 laptops of the current Alienware generation (m16, m18, X16). This is going to be a long one, so buckle up.
For some background, I returned both the m16 and m18 for a few reasons. The first of which is that I felt both of the laptops didn't justify how big and heavy they were. I am no stranger to laptops being large and unwieldy at times, but the m-series is pretty tanky. If you plan on using it as a desktop replacement, then you probably won't care. While I am largely stationary with my laptop, I feel as though if you're going to make a device this big, there should be a reason for it. The CPU temps on both the m16/m18 just sat pegged at 100 C constantly. I was confused because there is some serious cooling hardware under the hood. I understand that it could be caused by an uneven thermal paste application, but even as someone who builds their own computers, I am not comfortable repasting an inverted motherboard.
I understand that Dell has a philosophy to let the chips run full throttle, full wattage. I can get behind this if you give the user the ability to tweak and tune the machine to fit their performance/thermal preference. However, the undervolting was locked down nearly the entire time since release, and even when I was able to implement a slight undervolt, I was getting constant blue screens. So, I returned both and was considering moving away from an Alienware this generation altogether.
But then I got some incredible discounts on the X16 and I decided to give it a try, and I am blown away in some regards. Alienware set out to make a premium, luxurious laptop experience. And I feel like that's exactly what you get with the X16.
First of all, the build quality as always is excellent. It feels like a slab of tanky metal, and it looks absolutely stunning. The RGB trackpad is a welcome return, and the tron light improvements are noticeable. Overall, I really like the anodized aluminum finish as opposed to the paint coat from last gen -- I think this will hold up better long-term.
One thing that I will point out is the hinge felt very weird at first, like there was some sort of grinding as you closed the lid. However, I believe Alienware is using the same new hinge design from the X14 that actually has these rollers inside? Once I knew that it made sense, and I was no longer worried. It's an interesting feel.
The display is excellent. It is not mini-LED, but the color accuracy is fantastic on the 240 Hz display. I understand that some are concerned regarding the brightness but as an indoor user it is a complete non-issue for me and was not noticeable.
Probably the biggest improvement from last year's release (and the last several years, really) is the speakers. Coming from someone who just very recently tested both the Scar 18 and the Blade 18, the speakers here are by far the best laptop speakers I have heard outside of a MacBook Pro 16. They are really that good, especially with some tuning in the Dolby software. This was a sore spot for me with the m-series, because those laptops are so huge that it felt like a shame not to include big punchy speakers like the old Alienware 17 R4/R5 used to have. I understand that most people are using headphones with gaming laptops, but I love to listen to music on my laptop so this feature has become important to me.
The Cherry keyboard is excellent, as always. The secondary key function lighting is thankfully back along with the RGB touchpad (can someone tell me how to leave it always-on in the BIOS?). Obviously, if you want a number pad you won't find it here. However, if you prefer a centered keyboard it is the best typing experience on any gaming laptop in my opinion (the Scar is a close second).
The performance is also excellent. Yes, the CPU still goes right up to 100 C. However, what I am noticing is that this little X16 is pumping out a metric ton of wattage even in a GPU-bound game, even more than the i9-13980HX on the Scar 18 out of the box.
In God of War, Ultra 1600P with DLSS Quality, I am seeing anywhere between 75 W - 95 W on the CPU combined with a full GPU load, right up against that 175 W limit, getting about 170-180 FPS. That is seriously impressive stuff, considering I was getting in the 90s on the much bigger Scar 18 that was only putting out about 65 W with the GPU fully loaded. I believe this is because Dell has the dynamic limit on the CPU set to 120W, whereas the dynamic CPU load limit on the Scar is 65W. So yes, while the X16 is running hotter, the 13900HK is actually putting out more wattage in this tiny of a package. But, the 13900HK is not mandated by Intel to be locked. Alienware team -- PLEASE unlock the 13900HK for undervolting.
I'll be honest, I'm not going to dive too much into Alienware Command Center, because we all know it's bad. Since the most recent update, I am noticing far less frequent crashing than before. However, the pain point for me continues to be the automatically-set performance and lighting profiles with detected games, and no easy way to "Go Dark" with the lighting. I do not understand how AWCC was made worse in this regard. I get that Dell wanted to give the user as much customizability as possible, but it really just makes you feel like you have less control over your machine than before. Also, the animations and design is just so bloated. It doesn't need to be this complicated. As someone who has used Synapse, Armory Crate, and Lenovo Vantage, AWCC is at the bottom.
When it comes down to it, I understand why someone might think the X16 is not worth the price premium. After all, the m-series is offering more powerful CPUs and (arguably) better thermals, with more storage options and socketed RAM. However, if you are willing to look past all of that, the X16 is right up there with the Blade 16 in terms of a premium, luxurious laptop experience. The build quality, performance, speakers, it's all excellent. And for gaming, it surpasses the Blade 16 due to the far better keyboard and lighting options.
Overall, I can recommend the X16 as long as you are willing to put up with the disappointing Alienware Command Center. In the past, I always felt like there was some glaring compromise for me with an Alienware laptop. While the X16 is not perfect, it feels like the fewest compromises I've experienced for what is important to me in an Alienware laptop.

2023.05.31 06:38 Batmangoober Rep vs Retail Travis Scott Jordan 1 Low “Olive” (PK 4.0)

2023.05.30 15:04 Floodman11 Everything YOU need to know about the 2023 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans - Ask your questions here!

With only days separating us from the Centenary Edition of the 24 Heures du Mans, it's time again for the Le Mans Primer thread! This is the place if you’ve got any questions about the 2023 Le Mans event, no matter how small! There are no dumb questions about Le Mans!

CONTENTS

The Race

It all comes back to Le Mans. A century ago, people asked ‘Could a car continue to drive for 24 hours straight?’, an event was made to test that theory, and a legacy in racing, motorsport, and motoring was born. The 24 Heures du Mans is the holy grail of endurance motor racing, and brings up its Centenary edition this year. In its 100 year history, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is recognised as the most prestigious and gruelling test for innovations and improvements in motorsport technology. Technologies such as disk and air brakes, streamlined bodywork, fuel, oil, and lubricant improvements, improvements to engine efficiency and longevity, even things as simple as LED lighting and windscreen wiper blades have been trialled and tested at Le Mans. The normally hot conditions in the middle of June stretch the limits of reliability, with all the teams knowing that in order to beat their competitors, they must first beat the event. A variety of different engine configurations, displacements, positions, fuels, and hybrids have won over the history of the event. So far, petrol-fuelled traditional piston engines have been the most successful. Mazda managed to win using a Wankel Rotary engine in 1991 with the Mazda 787b (oh god listen to that sound!), while Audi was the first to win with an alternate fuel, taking victory in the diesel-powered R10 TDI in 2006. 2012 ushered in the era of the Hybrid, with Audi taking victory in the R18 e-tron Quattro, featuring a flywheel hybrid engine.

Qualifying

The Qualifying format for Le Mans is unique to the event, and called Hyperpole. In this format, all classes are permitted to use the track in the 1 hour qualifying session on Wednesday evening. The top 6 cars from each of the 4 classes then progress to the Hyperpole session on Thursday night, which sets the top of the grid for each class. This means that each class will be segregated on the final grid.

The Track

The Circuit de la Sarthe covers 13.6 kilometres of the French country side. It combines the permanent race components of the Ford Chicanes, the pit straight, under the Dunlop Bridge and through to Tertre Rouge as well as the normal everyday roads of the Mulsanne straight through to Indianapolis and Arnage. The track has gone through many iterations over the years; originally, the cars raced into the heart of the city, turning just before the river Sarthe, before hurtling down the 8.6 kilometre straight. In 1932, the circuit removed the journey into the city, and more closely resembled the track we see today. Here’s a video of Mike Hawthorn touring the circuit with a camera and microphone attached in 1956, one year after his involvement in the Le Mans disaster. The addition of the Porsche Curves and the Ford Chicanes in 1972 added an extra dimension to the high speed, fast flowing track. In the late 80’s, the Group C prototype cars would reach over 400km/h, achieving average speeds of almost 250km/h in qualifying for the entire lap. This is an onboard of Derek Bell’s Porsche 956 in 1983, showing the ridiculous speeds on this configuration of the circuit. This configuration remained relatively unchanged right up to 1990, until FIA mandations required that for the circuit to be sanctioned, it must not have a straight longer than 2km. The 6km Mulsanne straight was cut down into three relatively equal length portions by two chicanes, giving the iteration of the circuit used today. Allan McNish takes you on an onboard lap of the 2008 circuit in this video. McNish is one of the gods of the modern prototype era, winning Le Mans 3 times; once with Porsche and twice with Audi. For a more comprehensive focus on the track, John Hindhaugh’s track walk takes you on a 30 minute exploration of the track, with in depth focus on corners like the Dunlop Esses, Tertre Rouge, Mulsanne Corner, and the Ford Chicanes.
For some modern on boards, check out the fastest ever lap in the Circuit de la Sarthe: Kamui Kobayashi's 3:14.791 in 2017 Q2, and last year’s Hyperpole lap, by Brendon Hartley, setting a 3:24.408
The Dunlop Bridge
The iconic Dunlop Bridge has been a part of the Le Mans track since 1932, making it the oldest Dunlop Bridge at any track. This part of the track requires a good launch out of the first chicane before cresting the brow of the hill, and plunging through the esses out onto the Mulsanne straight. As the LMP cars are much more maneuverable, caution must be taken passing the slower GT traffic, as Allan McNish discovered in 2011.
Tertre Rouge
Tertre Rouge is the corner that launches the cars onto the long Mulsanne straight. Maintaining momentum through this corner as it opens on exit is imperative to ensure maximum straight line speed heading down the first part of the Mulsanne. The undulation in the road makes for fantastic viewing at night, with some magic images of the Porsches throwing up sparks on the exit in 2014. Finally, this was the location of Allan Simonsen’s fatal crash in mixed conditions in the 2013 Le Mans. The Danish flags will fly at the corner in his memory.
Mulsanne Corner
After the incredibly long Mulsanne straight, the Mulsanne corner nowadays features a subtle right hand kink before the tight 90 degree turn. Here, the cars decelerate from 340 km/h down to below 100 km/h, resulting in a brilliant opportunity to overtake. Again, care must be taken overtaking slower traffic; unaware drivers have caught out faster cars attempting to pass through the kink, such as Anthony Davidson’s spectacular crash in 2012 resulting in a broken vertebra for Davidson.
Indianapolis and Arnage
The Indanapolis and Arnage complex is one of the most committed areas of the track. Hurtling down the hill from the Mulsanne Corner, the road suddenly bends to the right, a corner which only the bravest prototype drivers take flat out, followed by a beautifully cambered open left hander taken in third gear. A short sprint leads the cars into Arnage, the slowest point on the track. The tight right hander was the scene of heartbreak for Toyota in 2014 when the leading #7 broke down and had to be retired after an FIA sensor melted and shut off the electronics. Kazuki Nakajiima was unable to make it to the pits, leaving him stranded on the circuit.
The Porsche Curves
At a terrifyingly high speed, the Porsche Curves is the most committed part of the lap. Getting caught behind GT traffic in this section can mean losing phenomenal amounts of time. This was the site of Loic Duval’s horrific crash in practice for the 2014 event. Keeping momentum through the flowing right-left-right handers that lead into Maison Blanche requires 100% commitment and ultimate precision, with severe punishment for getting it wrong. The exit of the Porsche Curves underwent significant change in 2020, with additional run-off added in the middle part of the section. This has turned the treacherous and claustrophobic sweeping left-hander into an open and sweeping corner, encouraging every little bit of road to be used on the exit. What it hasn’t changed is the terrific consequences for making a mistake
The Ford Chicanes
The final chapter in the 13.6km rollercoaster that is Le Mans is the Ford Chicanes. Two tight left-right handers with massive kerbs are all that separates the driver from the finish line. Watching the cars bounce over the kerbs in beautiful slow motion is certainly something to behold, but 24 hours of mistreatment can lead to suspension and steering issues. The drivers have to be attentive until the very end, lest they throw it all away in the last minutes of the race.
The Circuit de la Sarthe requires over 85% of the lap on full throttle, with the cars accelerating from less than 100km/h to over 300km/h five times each lap. The challenge of having a car finish Le Mans is in itself, an achievement.

The Classes

The WEC consists of three classes on track at once, resulting in three separate races on track each in their own battle for 24 Hours. The classes are split based on their car type, with LMH and LMDh machinery facing off in the Hypercar class, purpose built prototypes with a spec engine and gearbox battling in LMP2, and GT machinery racing in GTE. Each class has its own set of regulations, driver requirements, and relevance for the Le Mans event.

Hypercar

The current top class of endurance sportscars is Hypercar, combining cars built to Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and Le Mans Daytona (LMDh) specifications. Fighting it out will be LMH machinery from Toyota, Ferrari, Peugeot, Glickenhaus and Peugeot, while Porsche and Cadillac will be racing in LMDh cars. The LMH cars are bespoke sportscars, designed to a strict set of requirements dictating maximum power, drag coefficient, and weight, amongst other parameters, intended to limit the cost of the category. LMDh machines on the other hand are based on the future LMP2 chassis offerings, with manufacturers able to develop their own engines and bodywork, aligning with the power and drag coefficients of LMH. As part of cost-cutting, the Hypercar class is also subject to a Balance of Performance (BoP) formula, to level the playing field and ensure good racing! Hypercars are a little slower than their LMP1 predecessors, with lap times around the 3:24 mark for the Circuit de la Sarthe, which is on par with the 2014 LMP1 cars.

LMP2

The second prototype class is LMP2, and provides an excellent platform for endurance racing on a budget. The LMP2 class features a spec drivetrain and gearbox, using a Gibson V8 producing 400kW, and a selection of three chassis to choose from, of which the Oreca 07 has been the chassis of choice. This ensures that the competition in the class is very tight, and often comes down to the drivers and the team’s performance instead of just having the best car. While LMP2 was capable of 3:25 lap times in years previous, part of the ‘stratification’ of classes with Hypercar’s inclusion, the LMP2 class has lost some power and had some weight added. This should put LMP2 at the heels of the LMH pace, but with laptimes outside the 3:28 mark.
LMP2 is the first class that must feature amateur rated drivers. The Amateurs must drive for a minimum of 6 hours in the car over the course of the race. This means that there's an element of strategy of when to use your amateur driver throughout the race, as the amateur driver is generally slower than the Pros. The pro drivers in this class range from up and coming talent, former F1 drivers, and some of the best sportscar pilots in the world, and with 244 cars in this class, LMP2 is sure to be a hotbed of action over the 24 hours.

LMGTE-Am

GT class cars are cars that are derived from production models, and feature some of the most iconic cars and brands battling it out at the top of the field. The GTE cars are on the border of aero dependency, and can lap Le Mans in around 3:45 in a professional driver’s hands.
This year is the last year of the GTE class, and features 21 cars in a Pro-Am category, with cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Chevrolet on the grid. Despite the lack of a Pro category, the driver quality in GTE-Am is still incredibly high, with factory drivers, young stars, experienced champions and every level of experience in between on the grid, with each car featuring two Bronze or Silver rated drivers. With two amateur drivers, the strategy considerations multiply. While GTE-Am might be the class focussed on the least over the course of the race, the stories that come from this class are phenomenal, and it's well worth following.
The GT classes feature a range of different cars and configurations, and to equalise each of these against each other, the class goes through a process called 'Balance of Performance' or BoP. The organisers can adjust each individual car's weight, fuel tank, air restrictor, turbo boost pressures, and aero performance to alter performance levels to enable the different cars to race competitively. This can sometimes be contentious as every team will feel hard done by, but it is a necessary evil to having the variety of cars on the grid.

Innovative Car

Each year, there is the option for an Innovative Car, with untested or innovative technology, allowed to enter in it’s own category. In years past, this has allowed for entries from the Deltawing, or a modified LMP2 to allow amputees to race.
This year, the Innovative Car entry is a modified Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Next-Gen NASCAR, run by Hendrick Motorsports. The Next-Gen NASCAR features modifications to allow it to run safely on the Circuit de la Sarthe, and will be driven by multiple NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, and Le Mans Overall Winner Mike Rockenfeller.

The Legends

Part of the allure of the Le Mans 24 Hours is the history, and the legends steeped in history over the course of its 88 previous editions. The race has had many headline battles in its history - periods of time where two or three teams went toe to toe for years, with the drivers, cars, and brands embroiled in these battles given the chance to elevate themselves above the rest, and show their prowess.
In 2019, we at /WEC, took our normal Le Mans Legends celebrations to a new level; each week, members of the community have been writing reviews on some of the closest, most fascinating finishes in Le Mans history! You can check out these reports below!

The early races were dominated by the Bentley company in their Speed 6, who won 5 of the first 7 races. Cars were separated into classes by their engine displacement, and the overall winner was based on distance covered. If two cars had finished with the same number of laps, the car with the smaller displacement was declared the winner. The race wasn't run during the second world war, and comparatively very little information is available on the stories of the early days of Le Mans.
After the second world war, teams such as Jaguar, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin became the dominant teams. This era featured the legendary Jaguar D type, the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, and the Aston Martin DBR1. Jaguar won 5 times between 1951 and 1957, followed by an era of Ferrari dominance. Drivers such as Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, and John Fitch became household names as Le Mans became a battle between German engineering and British "garagistas".
Ferrari and Ford was the story of the 60's, with Ferrari winning 6 times straight before Ford won four in a row with the GT40 Mk II, taking their first win in 1966. The story of their rivalry is legendary in it's own right - Henry Ford had almost successfully bought out the Ferrari motor company, only to be knocked back by Enzo himself at the 11th hour. In retaliation, Ford planned to hurt Ferrari where it mattered most; on the track. The Ford GT40 was so comprehensively dominant that it won the 1966 edition 21 laps ahead of the next car back - a Porsche 906/6. None of the Ferrari 330P3's finished the race. This battle gave drivers like Bruce Mclaren, Dan Gurney, and Jacky Ickx their first Le Mans victories, and propelled them to the forefront of motorsport stardom at the height of motorsport's popularity.
The 1970's saw the dawn of Porsche, with the 917k taking the brand's first win in 1970, with the same car winning the following year in the hands of Helmut Marko (yes, that Helmut Marko). It would be 5 years before Porsche would win again, with Matra taking 3 victories in the interim, each at the hands of Henri Pescarolo. Porsche returned with the 936 and the 956/962c dominating the race for the next 20 years. In fact, from 1970, Porsche won 12 times in 18 events, including 7 in a row, and they miiight have been a bit cheeky about it. Amongst these 12 wins, there were 4 for both Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, and two for IMSA legend Hurley Haywood, as well as the first win for the Joest team in 1984. This era coincided with the introduction, and subsequent destruction of the Group C sportscar formula, widely regarded as the best Sportscar championship regulations of all time. Porsche’s dominance was eventually ended by Jaguar in the XJR-9LM, at the height of Group C’s magic. Ickx's 6 wins at this stage had earned him the nickname 'Mr Le Mans', a fitting title for one of the best drivers in the world at the time.
GT cars became a force to be reckoned with at the end of the Group C era, with classes being split into LMGTP and LMP. McLaren and Porsche had wins in GTP cars, in the F1 GTR and the 911 GT1 respectively, while Porsche, BMW and Peugeot scored LMP wins. 1997 saw the first win for Tom Kristensen, while the following year Allan McNish took his first victory, starting their journeys into the legend books of Le Mans.
The 2000’s ushered in the era of Audi, with all 13 of their wins coming since the turn of the century. GTP was disbanded due to safety issues, being replaced by GT1 and GT2. Audi picked up wins in the R8, the R10, the R15, and the R18, often dominating the might of the Peugeot 908. Audi's dominance elevated not only their drivers to legend status, but also their team managers, car designers, and race engineers. People like Reinhold Joest (team manager), Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Audisport director), Ulrich Baretzky (engine designer), Leena Gade, Howden Haynes (race engineers) behind the wall and Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello, Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer have become household names in the sport not only for their wins, but their longevity and domination. Audi's dominance was only broken by a win for Bentley in 2003, running basically an Audi under a British racing green skin, and Peugeot in 2009, before being ended for good by Porsche in 2015. After both Porsche and Audi left the top class, Toyota rose to dominance, taking the last 3 Le Mans events in a row!
Between 2015 and 2017, Porsche added to their victories, now holding a record 19 overall victories at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Audi trail with 13, with Ferrari, Jaguar and Bentley holding the next three positions. Toyota finally took their first overall victory in 2018, and have won every year since. Tom Kristensen is has the most victories at Le Mans, with 9 overall victories over his career with Porsche, Audi and Bentley, inheriting the title of Mr Le Mans.

2023.05.30 07:58 zeidorade777 My '22 CX-5 Signature vs. Lexus RX 500h F Sport

My dad bought my mom a Lexus RX 500h F Sport this Saturday, which after all the options and other fees added cost $80,000+. I got to drive it yesterday, and I have say, my '22 CX-5 Signature holds up pretty well to it, despite being half the cost. The Lexus' turbocharged, hybrid 4-cylinder engine definitely has more power and better gas mileage, the large infotainment screen is pretty nice (although the system is not very intuitive), and it has more legroom, but honestly there aren't many other ways that it really overtakes the CX-5. The Lexus has a very quiet cabin, but my CX-5 is almost as quiet. I didn't get to really test out the Mark Levinson sound system too much, but what I did hear didn't really sound that great compared to the Bose system in the CX-5. The driver's seat in the Lexus was really uncomfortable for me, with the side bolstering being too tight, and I don't think it is adjustable. It definitely held you in place a lot better than the Mazda, but I couldn't wait to get out of the seat after driving it for about 20-30 minutes (the rear seats I found to be way more comfortable). The 6 speed transmission is smoother in the Lexus, and it's a less firm ride, but neither is significantly better. As far as safety and luxury features, the Signature has almost everything the Lexus has, which along with everything else makes me even more impressed with my CX-5 and what Mazda offers for half the cost.

2023.05.29 23:21 Zooqueenie cross-posting: GV60 versus Ioniq 6 Limited AWD

Please weigh in with opinions to help inform my purchase — Thank you!
I have had my eye on the Ioniq 6 for months and find the exterior streamlined styling of the car to be gorgeous with its aerodynamic lines, sloping roof, rear spoilers, etc. I live in a cold weather climate with routine snow in the winter, so AWD is desirable.
However, the interior, even on the Limited trim, is basic, with a hideous plastic center console and no HUD in the US market unlike the “Ultimate” package abroad. The design discrepancy between exterior and interior styling strikes me as drastic, although the interior is “nice enough” given all of the other fine qualities of the vehicle (range, efficiency, tech). I appreciate the spaciousness of the rear seat although head room is lacking. My backseat passengers will be children, so that isn’t a concern.
When all is said and done, a top-tier trim of Ioniq 6 (Limited AWD) in my preferred color (white) has been quoted by my local dealer at $58,200 ($535 above $57665 on the Hyundai USA website, but this mark-up is off-set by rebates and a generous trade-in offer).
The Genesis GV60 in the base (Advanced) trim, on the other hand, starts at ~$61K, fully loaded with all the features of the top-trim Ioniq 6 plus much more, including a HUD, B&O sound system, and a a variety of sensible interfaces (buttons, dials, knobs, touch-sensitive pads, etc).
In general, the interior of the GV60 is vastly more luxurious at a comparable price point. The exterior is attractive but not as compelling to me personally as the Porsche-adjacent sporty look of the Ioniq 6. The big pillars and slanting rear windshield of the GV60 are unappealing and the backseat looks cramped relative to the Ioniq 6, which is a much longer car despite being a sedan rather than crossover.
The other drawback of the GV60 is that the nearest dealership is 60+ miles away, so service could be a hassle.
Overall, I still feel more drawn to the look and character of the Ioniq 6 but feel conflicted because the GV60 offers such a premium interior within the same price bracket.
Thoughts?

2023.05.29 22:51 ConsistentBuilding12 Crossover/SUV for city living

We live in SF and are looking for a SUV. Priorities are ease of parking (e.g. not too long) and not being a big target for break-ins or theft. No kids at this time. Short commute (30 min), city driving and occassional weekend trips.
We don't have access to plug-in for PHEV where we live, but we would like a (non plug-in) Hybrid if possible.
We've been deciding between these two: - Leasing an Audi Q5 for 3 years, and then seeing how (PH)EV tech and our home owning situation looks like then - Buying a Lexus NX or RX, leaning heavily towards the NX as it is ~8 inches shorter for parking reasons
Does anyone have experience debating or driving related to our two decision points -- 1) Audi vs Lexus ownership or 2) NX vs RX?
Thanks in advance!

2023.05.29 21:58 cptsanderzz 2023 Kia Forte GT line (sport premium package) vs. 2023 Honda Civic EX

Forte - sales price 26k
Civic - sales price 27.7k

The fully loaded forte comes with so many tech things and driver assistance things that it is crazy that they are able to offer all of that for the price point they gave me. I actually enjoyed the Forte ride more than I did the civic. There are better incentives for the Forte (2.9%) vs the civic (3.9%). Here is where I'm at a cross roads, I'm getting so much more car for the price with the forte vs. civic. I know KIA is on the come up in terms of reliability, but at the end of the day it is still a KIA. Tbf the civic stretches my budget and my desired monthly payment a tad and I'm wondering if the civic is worth that extra cost. Both cars come with lifetime powertrain warranty. My thought is, since both cars come with lifetime powertrain warranty and the Kia is significantly cheaper, am I crazy to be considering the KIA over the civic? This is my first time buying a new car, so I'm just trying to figure out how to take my dollar the farthest. I don't care much about resale value because I intend to drive the car for a long time (at least 10 years). What are people's advice? I have also never dealt with car warranties before since all my previous cars were greater than 10 years old, so please inform me if I am misunderstanding how warranties actually work.
