I've been peeking into this sub since last year after resigning from a technical internship. Pay was low and rigid. Management was hell-bent on holding these standups multiple times a day and often for long periods of time. I felt I couldn't get any work done and then they started calling me out for not 'being fast enough'. Mind you I was the only undergrad on the team and certainly didn't have the experience to perform at the senior level. The whole situation stressed me out and I quit. Ever since then, I've been looking for another position but to no success. Sometimes I wonder if I'm being blacklisted (I did have some strong words for the HR department when I did my exit interview). Been applying for months and have since had to branch away from nuclear engineering (my major) due to low frequency of job postings. No company seems to be seriously hiring and checking with friends who just graduated, this is a relatable reality. Even locally, I can't seem to find meaningful work. It's either getting ghosted or getting offers with no pay (yes seriously). It's a huge slap in the face as I'm about to graduate Dec. this year and my degree feels absolutely worthless with no job prospects let alone internship prospects.
Now I have a lot of side hobbies, namely 3D modeling, stable diffusion, creative stuff like that. I've been able to monetize it to some capacity but for the most part it's just been something I enjoy. I'd really appreciate it if you took a look at my portfolio site nicdane.com. Don't care too much if I'm doxing myself. I'd rather be open and honest about my situation.
I'm currently in the midwest but living costs are inflating rapidly here and the pay isn't getting any better. Socialists claim that capitalism is theft because the workers use their labor to build capital for capitalists to own as private property while the capitalist doesn't do anything in this process (ignoring the fact that running a business and managing labor is work)
So I wanted to present a simplified scenario and know people's thoughts and understand from a socialist perspective:
If you own a laundromat, and you hire a worker and both sides voluntarily agree to the work they will do and agree to a salary to be paid and that worker's labor builds you a laundry machine for your laundromat with the owners tools and owner's money for parts.
Does that mean the worker should own the laundry machine?
If the worker doesn't own the laundry machine, does that mean the owner is stealing from the worker?
If the worker thinks they're being exploited by the capitalist why doesn't the worker just leave and build their own laundry machine for themselves? Or better yet why can't all the laundromat workers in the area collectively start a socialist laundromat?
This situation can be expanded to pretty much any economic arrangement in capitalism: oil rigs, skyscrapers, factories, source code and can be expanded to the services sector and knowledge based economy as well.

My wife and I recently hired a licensed GC to do the following in our backyard: -Extend existing 8x8 patio concrete to ends of fence lines(stone walls) -Lay down artificial grass -Construct pergola
We’ve had some concerns about the concrete as it was just laid last week. They laid the concrete over the existing concrete and extended. There are some shrinkage cracks here and there, which I learned are inevitable. However, we have two specifically that go across the entire length of the concrete(from patio door to start of turf ~8’). Both cracks are fairly thin. I’m extremely ignorant to construction which is why I hired out for this. Are the long shrinkage cracks expected and unavoidable, or is this something I should bring to the GC’s attention?
Additionally, there is about 3-4 inches of concrete on our external wall and a mess of our gate. Is this unavoidable and expected?

I’ve had pretty severe pain on the left side of my neck over the last month or two, enough to visit my family doctor (he thinks it’s jaw related) and hire a masseuse. The only thing that changed for me in this time was getting out of Invisalign trays and getting my plastic, removable retainer. I have an appointment with a neurologist soon, and might go visit my orthodontist to see if he can pinpoint anything. I’ve always had bruxism and TMJ - my masseters are enormous. It flared a few times during my Invisalign treatment, but this neck pain is new and it’s awful. My platysmal bands are also very prominent lately. I’ve read I can get Botox in my neck and jaw, so I’m strongly considering it. I’ve also previously been diagnosed with sleep apnea but it was too minor to prescribe a cpap or anything.
Does anyone have a similar story, especially about the neck pain or Invisalign experience, or any suggestions?

Like the rest of you, I am absolutely excited to see that the next chapter is on its way. I've been playing Cities Skylines since day one, after the colossal disappointment that Simcity 2013 was. But the more and more posts I read here, the more I think caution is needed.
I see people expecting large performance gains or talking about all the possible features that are sure to be there in Cities Skylines 2. I know we appreciate Paradox for listening to the community and even hiring some of the modders from the Steam workshop but I think we also need to look at the gaming industry in general and realize there's been a lot of disappointment over the years. There's no guarantee that we'll see better CPU utilization or FPS output with this game, nor should we expect odd behavior from Cities Skylines to go away in this next iteration (one lane traffic, for example) even with a new engine.
Anyway, just think we need to dramatically lower our expections for a game we haven't even see gameplay of and realize Cities Skylines might be the best there was in this series. It's incredibly difficult to pull off a great sequel but here's to hoping Paradox is able to! Again, like the rest of you, I'm excited to get my hands on it!

First time I post here but I would really need some advice how to carry forward:
Full story: my wife is a nurse at a carehome that has a parking lot from which I drop her off and pick her. Now the carehome has hired a private parking company (Civil enforcement limited) that can issue Parking Charge Notices. Before my wife registered my car, the company sent us 3 PCNs on different dates. Since then I have received a letter from the carehome that they want to cancel all PCNs and we appealed all 3 sepparately with the letter from the carehome, stating that it was in the carehome's benefit for me to be in the parking lot (I had to wait for her to give the handover, she stayed 20 minutes after the schedule). The company has cancelled 2 of the 3 PCNs but refused to cancel the 3rd without reason mentioned. I am willing to take them to small claims court. What should I do?

First time I post here but I would really need some advice how to carry forward:
Full story: my wife is a nurse at a carehome that has a parking lot from which I drop her off and pick her. Now the carehome has hired a private parking company (Civil enforcement limited) that can issue Parking Charge Notices. Before my wife registered my car, the company sent us 3 PCNs on different dates. Since then I have received a letter from the carehome that they want to cancel all PCNs and we appealed all 3 sepparately with the letter from the carehome, stating that it was in the carehome's benefit for me to be in the parking lot (I had to wait for her to give the handover, she stayed 20 minutes after the schedule). The company has cancelled 2 of the 3 PCNs but refused to cancel the 3rd without reason mentioned. I am willing to take them to small claims court. What should I do?

One turns on the light, the other turns on the outlet. They're parallel. When I plug something into the outlet the light also, dimly, comes on. When I also turn on the light, the power to the outlet cuts off. . I do not understand this. There's no labeling or color coding on wires. This is cursed. There's also an extension cord that comes out of from the lamp and is stapled across the ceiling to a wall? It doesn't turn on unless I connect power to neutral in a connection box right below the switches. There's also one more such mysterious connection and I don't know what it does. I am scared. Please help me. |
