2023.05.31 17:40 Woody-Sailor-DM A Brief History of an (as yet) Unnamed Adventuring Group
Part 1. Chapter 1. A ship pulls away from a Suzail pier, carrying, in disguise, the Archmage Vilenthral, High Priest Master Colhoun Mindient, Overseer Eilhom Brickertag, an ancient gold dragon wearing the form of a high elf, Grand Marshall Lord Jamus Pickerel, and somewhat bizarrely, Lord Pickerel’s grandmother. They head out into the Dragonreach, bound for unknown ports.
This story is not about them. Several piers away, a shabby looking but well-kept ship, Sea Sprite, pulls away from the dock with a load of wares to sell in other ports. Also aboard are Dillium Pikles (sometimes spelled by Dillum Pickless by unsuspecting humans), a female elven priest of Ilmater; Lythanderallys, a high elf that Dillium has nicknamed “Emo Elf”; young Lord Finister Eldroon (Finst), a human currently on a trade mission for the queen of Cormyr; Lord Eldroon’s groom, Dalton PathHome, an attentive halfling; Novos Demedichi, a tall, dark haired human clad in dark colors; Mrs. Potts, a plump elderly lady traveling to visit her sister in Raven’s Bluff; and her granddaughter Myriam Selligrew, along with assorted bags, chests, hatboxes, suitcases, trunks, garment bags, boxes, and pressed flowers. The other passengers also have their own gear. Discussions amongst the passengers are muted after Captain Drask’s lecture and during dinner, and most drift off to sleep early.
The first port of call is Marsember, a large Cormyran city. While only in town for a short while, Dillium gets into an altercation with the local port police while defending a band of mischievous street urchins, before returning to the ship to hide from the authorities. Finst and Dalton take a tour of the port areas of the city and learn of the impending end of the world by dragons, as described by a strange half-naked man. Novos and Lythanderallys remain onboard, absorbed in their own affairs, while Mrs. Potts and Myriam tour the ladies’ haberdashers and purchase extravagant hats.
The next port is Urmlaspyr, a largely independent city-state generally on friendly terms with Cormyr. It is here that Finst and Dalton take in a 'live action play' in a local tavern. Dillium attends the local temple (to the Triad of Torm, Helm, and Ilmater), but as a healer, she is called to a local tavern to care for a wounded tavern keep. Finst applauds the outstanding acting as Dillium, Dalton, and three bystanders care for the tavern keep and take him to the temple for healing. The father of the temple rewards Dillium with a silver falcon (which is a unit of coin in Sembia, and not a metallic bird). Later that night, Finst asks Dillium to reprise her act at dinner, but she declines. Novos and Lythanderallys remain onboard, absorbed in their own affairs, while Mrs. Potts and Myriam tour the ladies’ tailors and purchase flowery dresses.
A day or two at sea brings Sea Sprite and all aboard to Saerloon, a huge but somehow under populated city further down the coast of Sembia. Over a period of several days, Sea Sprite offloads and loads cargo while Mrs. Potts commands the assembled passengers to partake in a 'shore party'. Believing, apparently, that a shore party is indeed some sort of celebratory gathering, she commandeers a quaint cafe in a central square and commands them to serve finger sandwiches and dainty cookies to her friends and a few passersby not quick enough to dodge out of her force of personality. As night sets in, the shore party retires to a local hotel, shaped and built like an imposing keep (but actually quite comfortable inside). Brunch is buffet style, which Finst delights in and eventually has to be dragged away from. Novos and Lythanderallys have disappeared, possibly back to their rooms, still absorbed in their own affairs. Mrs. Potts and Myriam tour local cobblers and purchase dainty flower-themed slippers. Dillium intends to attend the local temple, but is spooked by the sight of a full temple to Bhaal, a quite unpleasant god of violent and ritualistic murder. She attempts to return to the ship, only to be turned away (as they are still loading cargo). She continues on to her own temple, and runs into Finst and Dalton.
Finst has decided to shop for a souvenir, of Sembia or Saerloon or something else is never really identified. He heads for the nearest disreputable-looking souvenir shop, and after bargaining with the shopkeep, purchases an ivory tooth. Or perhaps a tusk. In any case it has a quite fetching symbol on the top and appears to be old, so Finst buys it and hands it off to Dalton to carry. The carved trinket may never again appear in this story, so it may not be important. As they leave the shop, they run into Dillium, and are accosted by a short nasty goblin. After a tense conversation where words like “possibly stolen property” and “witnesses” are uttered, an ornate and expensive looking scroll case that may or may not have recently belonged to the archmage Llorianda de la Alas ends up in Dillium’s hands.
Many miles away something crawls from the slime at the bottom of a dark quiet lake.
End of Chapter One
A weekly recount of our gaming session. Yeah, to make a better story I should elaborate on some of the things that are largely glossed over here...

2023.05.31 17:36 Own-Narwhal-9001 What is the process of getting your child back?
I need some advice and to learn more about CPS and what to expect. This is going to be pretty long so will include a TLDR.
My sister "L" (32f) is an awful parent. She is constantly living in a home filled with animal feces, no food, no plumbing, etc. She still thinks she's 25, and is constantly out partying with whichever new boyfriend she has that week. My neice "T" (13f) is a great kid but has grown up in this awful situation. L leaves T alone for hours at a time during all hours of the night while she is out at the bars. T calls me at least once a week to tell me what her mom is doing and that she's bored. Her house is near horder level, filled with all sorts of cat and dog feces.
Let me preface by saying that I should've called CPS long ago, but I didn't want to be responsible for my sister losing her daughter.
Fast forward to this week. L has a new boyfriend with lots of money and was preparing to go on a 5 state vacation with him. T was not invited. T called me and told me she was staying with a friend during this time. I didn't realize until yesterday that she had lied to me. She was home by herself in this disgusting house with no food. If I would have known she was by herself, I would've let her stay with me, as would the rest of my family.
Last night, someone called CPS. I suspect it was T, and that this is her way of putting her mom in her place/giving her a wake up call, however this is not confirmed. The police showed up, took several pictures of the house, and sent her to a foster home for the night. The rest of my family tried to take her instead, however the police said it was too late to do background checks (it was about 10pm). My neice is terrified, obviously, but is with a safe family a city away. She still had her phone last night, but hasn't texted me back this morning, I assume the family took it.
Some of my family is on their way to L's house to clean and throw everything away. L is still several states away with no return in sight for the next couple of days. My father is going to get custody of T today and be her foster parent until L can get her back.
Now here is where I need info. My family thinks that if they clean the house, L will be able to take T back immediately. However, I don't believe this for a minute. Due to the state of the house, I assume that L will have to find a job (she's unemployed), take a drug test( she does several recreational drugs), and prove to CPS that T is safe there. I can see this being at least a month long process, if not more. I've read on the sub that a lot of times it takes years to get the child back. My sister is an awful parent, and thinks that this is just normal things.
I am just looking for some insight on what the process of getting your child back looks like. Any help is much appreciated.
TLDR: Niece is in a foster home, sister thinks she is going to get her back immediately, need info on the process for getting your child back. Sisters house is disgusting and she's a deadbeat parent.
Edit: I am in Idaho.

2023.05.31 17:17 DrEskimo Friend flying from Ontario to Halifax today, suddenly informed his new apartment won't be ready for about 5 more days.
My friend is from Ukraine and has relatively poor English. I feel as though he is often a target of exploitation because he doesn't know the legal system and cannot completely defend himself in the local language. He is meant to be moving from our city in Ontario today to Halifax, where he has already signed a lease, booked his flight, etc. He is leaving today and at the airport, received a notice from the landlords that the apartment will not be ready until the 5th at the soonest.
Obviously, this means he has nowhere to stay for 5 days, so he'll have to find himself a hotel. My question is this being SO short-notice, literally was meant to move in tomorrow, do they not have to reimburse the cost of his hotel stay? He is basically fucked right now and due to this has to put down like 1000~ on staying in hotels that he did not account for spending. I told him not to worry and that he should definitely inquire with them about reimbursement.
I am not from Nova Scotia, and am finding it a bit tough to find a conclusive answer on this subject. In my mind, they owe him the total cost of the hotel stay.

I haven’t even flirted with anyone for such a long time that I thought this could be fun. I’d have loved to say that the idea of doing this came to me during a dream, but I haven’t dreamt in a long time.
I am a 21 years old male from a big city in Brazil. I am going to university for a social sciences degree, and I have done pretty well so far. Besides all that, I write poetry on the side, and I work for a small online newspaper.
I am fascinated fairly often by many things and I have many hobbies so you won’t be bored. Last month I became fascinated by Spanish modern history after reading Preston’s biography of Francisco Franco and I was reading about the Miracle on the Han River yesterday, while my family gave a lunch party and I had to keep myself entertained while they discussed the tragedy of a heiress’ dog many illnesses, which were mysteriously shared with his owner, and some reforms in the Vatican Bank. But yes, in general, I really enjoy the humanities. I follow politics keenly – in fact, there is some chance I might have some thoughts on your country’s politics – and I’d say I am on the centre-left – pro-choice, in favour of a robust welfare state, LGBTQ+ rights, affirmative action. If you know about Brazilian politics, I voted for Marina and Haddad in 2018 (the voting age here is 16), and Lula last year.
As you can imagine, I also really enjoy reading and writing. Besides poetry, I have often thought about reading a novel, but this seems like too much work – and it seems that it would be arrogant of me to write a novel having lived this little. I really enjoy learning about other languages and cultures and I know a bit of French, German, Spanish, and Russian, besides English and Portuguese. I am into genealogy and I have helped a few friends with it. I also really enjoy TV shows and cinema, and I am easily brought to tears. I cried during the last Minions movie, even if I didn’t want to be there. I love music and my taste in it has been described as “fairly gay”. I’d have loved to be a musician, but I’d have loved to have been many things.
I guess I am pretty introverted, polite, and timid. I am affectionate and I can be really passionate as well. And I am fairly funny, or rather, I have made a few people laugh over the years. I asked a close friend to describe myself, and that is what he said:
I think you’re very communicative. Shrewd, funny, a good companion. Kind of withdrawn but not necessarily shy. You avoid conflict and unnecessary arguments, but love to participate in good conversations. I think you’re very kind too, besides being polite.
As for what I want to do with my life, I am unsure though I am inclined to go into academia. I have been considering applying to a PhD program in the U.S. after finishing my undergrad here in Brazil. My family does want me to go into their business, which is related to politics. I have also considered going into diplomacy.
Who am I looking for? I’d look like someone curious about the world around her, and open-minded.

2023.05.31 17:06 GOTOROS One step forward, two steps back
I have been trying to save, plan, and work my way out of generational poverty. I have worked 2 or more jobs for the past 14ish years to make this happen.
My accomplishments from 2019 to now:
- I have been trying to live below my means while saving. I was able to pay cash for my rapidly approaching trip to Italy (my first ever international trip!) after saving for almost 3 years including saving all tax returns and bonuses from my job. All the money has been already paid for the hotel, flight, and my spending money and small buffer is in a separate account.
- I have almost paid off my student loans and other, non-mortgage, debt. I have a little over $10,500 left and its decreasing every week. My next step will be to tackle the mortgage.
- I was able to qualify for a FHA loan to buy a house. I qualified for over 100k but I didn't want to be "house poor" so I bought a smaller, cheaper home than what the mortgage company stated I could afford. I have been continuing to save for the last 2 years.
- Not an accomplishment but I have intentionally not had children, despite my desire to be a parent, because I wanted to increase my income, knowledge, and ability to not fall back into poverty.
However, I have now hit a serious (for me) road block. I rely on my car for transportation for both of my jobs and other necessary tasks. I intentionally plan driving trips to minimize my fuel costs as I follow a pretty strict budget. I spend less than $30 every week in gas. I bought a used car ("Gertie") several years ago for under 2k. She has done me a solid but I knew that she was on her way to the old car graveyard when I started having more and more problems. I began saving for a new to me car but I have only had time to save $500. Two weekends ago, the entire exhaust system fell off Gertie and since then, I have had several more things start breaking down on her. Due to my reliance on a car, I have been pushed toward going to a dealership.
My area is a small, semi-rural city. We have no public transportation after 5pm and even then they only use specific pickup/drop off spots that are no where near my jobs. So, unfortunately, that is not an option. I considered a bike but I wouldn't be able to let my dog out between jobs or be able to make it to job 2 on time. (Job 1 ends at 5pm and Job 2 begins at 5:30pm.) Having a car gives me just enough time to let my dog out to potty before heading to the next job. I also spend every lunch letting the dog out for active time and eating at home to save money and have quality time with my pets.
I am frustrated at myself for not thinking further ahead and using my vacation savings towards a new-to-me car. Having a car payment will wreck my current budget and debt repayment plans. I thought I was getting ahead but now I've been knocked off the wagon, again.

2023.05.31 16:47 Confident_Item_3250 I 25 M can’t get over my ex 25F
Hello, I am a 25 year old (M) and I’m having a really hard time getting over my ex. A little backstory but her and I met through a mutual friend and kinda rushed into the relationship. It eventually got to the point where she asked me to move in with her. It was a tough choice because she lived in a completely different state (her city had MILLIONS more people than my little hometown) but I really liked her and took the chance. It was rocky at first, but we really started to hit a stride and fall in love with each other. She became my best friend and a great support system. I was there for her and she was there for me, we traveled (something I really never did) ate new food, everything. It was hard leaving all my friends and family, but I also needed to find a job in my field and I finally found it in this new city! I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my life then those moments. Since it was hard for me at first to make friends, she introduced me to her friend that had a boyfriend who was super extrovert (I’m kinda shy so it worked). He was a super cool dude and was the kinda guy to bring you into a conversation if you were feeling left out. We hung out with them at least once a week and planned so many trips around us as couples. Then, out of nowhere he died in a accident. I had never dealt with anything like this in my life so I shut down. Of course our friend group feel apart as well. His girlfriend moved to a different state, the other guys I talked to kinda did the same thing and started isolating. My ex was big on going out, so this became a problem. She started hanging with her single friends and I’m sure you know where this is going. That winter also we had a huge fight over going to see my family (they suck yes but I still have to visit at least once a year). We didn’t know at the time but she had a problem with her IUD that was messing with her hormones really bad. She was going through a lot, but we didn’t know at the time. She was really crabby with me all the time (also because I wasn’t going out) but at the same time I needed some time to heal. She would constantly tell me how much she hated me and regretting dating me. I took a lot of it to heart and it fucked with my head bad, even after we found out she was sick. Anyways, after about 4 months after my friend died I started wanting to do things and go out again, but my ex started acting weird. She used to always tell me how much I meant to her and how much she loved me, but then she started saying things like “yeah, I hope it works out” and things like that. Anyways the week before the Super Bowl I randomly asked her if she was ok and she broke up with me out of nowhere. I was shocked and devastated, we just were starting to go out every week again, but it was too late. I asked why and she said it was for multiple reasons, I didn’t make enough money (I had gotten a new job but never missed payments, also had to pay for my college unlike her so she wasn’t used to being with someone that didn’t have 6 figured in his bank account), I wasn’t there for her when she was going through her IUD problem (I held her hand through every appointment, procedure, everything) and she said she hated the dog (she was a bad dog, but it was just because she was a puppy). I broke down because of all this, it tore me up. I’ll say I handled it wrong but I became super depressed after she said all of this. I guess she felt bad and said we could work on it, so we did. We set goals, for me and the dog. I had $300 training set up for her and everything. Anyway, the Super Bowl came around and we decided to host. Of course she brought her single friend group, who none of which thanked me for making ALL the food, hell almost all of them didn’t even say hi to me. Like the pathetic man I am I invited what few friends I had, picture just two dudes and someone’s girlfriend, and we had the party. Towards the end of it, most had left and my ex was in the kitchen talking to her friends while I was on the couch 10 feet away talking to mine while the game was playing loudly on the tv. I then heard one of her friends say “wait you got his number? He’s so cute!” As they began to celebrate. It then hit me like a ton of bricks that she broke up with me randomly because she met this new guy. I kept my composure and waited till everyone left before I made a scene. She of course lied at first and said how she shut him down and only talked to him because she thought he was gay. She sweared on multiple family members lives and when I pulled up her deleted text she had been talking to him for a month up to this point. No mention of me, just talking about how hot they thought each other was and how they needed to see each others places soon. He was apart of that single girls group so they all loved him anyways. To speed up the story, me and the dog moved out, I had to hand move alllllll my stuff a shitty hotel until my apartment was ready. We blocked each other on everything, and it’s been over 4 months since it happened. At first I was doing really bad, I’ve lost 40 pounds (not in a good way) during this and it’s really messed with my confidence as I used to be built. I started doing better for a little, but now I’m back to not being able to sleep because I miss her. I know I sound stupid, but I don’t think she was a bad person at all. I think with the hormone problems, our friends death, she just made a poor decision. I guess the advice I need is how do I go on? I feel like her life is continuing fine if not better (the guy she cheated on me with was making a lot of money, something she really cares about). Meanwhile my life is horrible, like literally horrible. I have a couple friends in this city but not many. Dates make me feel dead inside. I have my dog, who btw has turned a complete 180 and now helps me so much but she’s super expensive and paying for a whole vet bill is different than paying half. Everyday it just feels like whatever I do it isn’t fun anymore. I used to love biking, now I get bored 5 minutes in or don’t even want to go at all. Can’t get a gym membership cause my dog barks when she hears my roommates and I can’t lose this place. It really feels like my life is over or near done. I’m regressing, but trying to improve and it’s still not helping at all. I just don’t know what to do with my life anymore. I miss her

I just don’t know what to do with my life anymore. I miss her

2023.05.31 16:33 LycheePlus Looking for small breed recs
Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
This will be my first dog as an adult where I will be the one training and mainly caring for said dog. However I grew up with boxers but never trained them, really only walked, fed and played. Just normal kid dog responsibilities.
Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?
I prefer to go through a reputable breeder.
Describe your ideal dog.
My ideal dog would be a small breed dog that would be somewhat easily trainable as someone who would be training a dog for the first time but is willing to put in the time. A family dog that would be good around cats and eventually small children. I would also like a dog that would be snuggly.
What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
I really dont have any breeds I have a strong preference for other than I like the way poodles look but Im looking for a dog that will fit well into my family not one that looks pretty.
What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
I would like to do the basics like leash training, not to jump or lick people, not to bark at every little thing, not that I dont want them to ever bark just dont want them sitting at the window barking at people. Maybe more as I do more research.
Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
No I do not.
Care Commitments
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
About two hours a day I would be able to dedicate to training.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
Everyday I would be able to take the dog on 2 thirty minute walks with things like the dog park being once or twice a week.
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
I am willing to do brushing a few times a week. I plan on doing all the grooming at home like nails, ears and trimming.
Personal Preferences
10) What size dog are you looking for?
A small lap sized dog. Probably something under 25lbs.
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
I can deal with shedding, some barking like a few barks when new people enter the home but be able to be trained to stop and not become excessive. Minimum slobber.
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
Not super important, however I would like to train my dog to be recalled if for whatever reason they get off leash.
Dog Personality and Behavior
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
A snuggly dog
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
A dog thats somewhere in the middle, I want a dog thats happy to be with its owner but doesnt need to be glue to their side 24/7 and can handle being on their own for a couple hours at a time.
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
I would like for them to be alert but not aggressive. I would like for my dog not to jump on visitors but still friendly.
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
Depends on the aggression level. I would be able to care for a dog who couldnt live with other dogs but wouldnt be able to care for a dog who cant even go for a walk if theres a dog on the other side of the street.
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
Theres not any I can think of.
Lifestyle
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
No more than a couple hours a day maybe up to six hours once a week.
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
My partner's preferences are the same as mine, probably wont have much of a hand in training but will walk the dog/ clean up after dog when Im sick or those first months after we eventually have children. It will be "my" dog so to speak but they will probably play with them sometimes.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
I have a few cats, one of them can be a little rowdy so a dog that could handle a cat that still plays like a kitten is preferred. I have no plans for any other pets.
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
Eventually, I dont have any children now but plan on starting in a few years.
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
My partner owns our current home. We do plan on moving to washington state in a couple years and may rent for about 1 year.
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
I live in florida and any banned breeds are all dogs that would be too big.
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
It typically ranges from 70 to 90 degrees but I plan on moving to washington state where theres more variety in temperatures.
Additional Information and Questions
25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.
I plan on adopting a dog in a couple years and am just not starting my research on best dog training and caretaking practices so if you have any book/youtube recs then I'll take those as well.
26) Feel free to ask any questions below.

2023.05.31 16:31 National-Paint-7928 AITA for leaving the engagement dinner due to my fiance's obsession with the dog?
I(28M) proposed recently to my girlfriend(27F). We are planning the wedding to happen next year. My fiance has a 5 year old golden retriever mix. I had a few bad experiences with dogs as a kid. Her dog is very friendly and he gets all the attention from my fiance. She denied some jobs that won't let her work from home as she is worried about the dog. I work from home 3 days a week and she only texts asking how the dog is.
I planned this very nice trip last weekend to celebrate our engagement. I booked a nice hotel and made reservations at a nice restaurant. One of our close friends stayed with the dog. My fiance asked her to text with an update every two hours. I did my best to make it a wonderful weekend.
We had reservations for 7PM at the restaurant. My fiance didn't get ready until 6:40 as she hadn't heard from the sitter. When we arrived at the restaurant, we had to wait 30 minutes for a table to open. When we sat down, my fiance spent the entire dinner on her phone trying to get ahold of the friend. I paid for the meal and got up from the table telling her that I was going to wait in the car. She came out 20 minutes later screaming at me for leaving her at the table alone.
I yelled back that she ruined our engagement trip for putting the dog over us. We sat in the silence all the way home and she's thinking about going to stay with her parents. I'm now being called an AH for leaving from the restaurant.

Memory transcript subject: Tressa, Venlil civilian
Date [Standardized Human Time]: February 29th, 2177
Location: City 23, Venlil Prime
“Come on, just move over a little! You know tails need more room than that!”
“I've moved over as much as I can. Any more, and I’ll get impaled.”
“You… actually, why is Burai even in the back with us? Shouldn’t it be him driving?”
“Trish doesn’t get distracted by our bickering like I would be. You should be thankful I’m back here and not up in front.”
“Oh yeah, real thankful. If Sasha bleeds out getting stuck by you, I’ll make sure to thank you before throwing you out the back.”
“Out the back of
my own truck? Tressa. My dignity, please.”
The phrase rang hollow. None of them had any semblance of dignity, not while stuffed in the back of the vehicle like cattle. Tressa’s tail was already starting to get sore, and he had to imagine sitting packed next to a Gojid without the protection of wool was a harrowing experience for both Sasha and James, even with thick clothing that could cushion the blow instead. That Trish was allowed to be free of this torment simply by virtue of her focus felt like an insult. The injustice of it all stung at him, an annoying buzz at the edge of his mind which jabbed every time he had to reposition so his tail didn’t get crushed.
He fought with his own self-control to not constantly complain during the entire trip, but it was a hopeless losing battle. The whole trip to the upper layer of City 23 was punctuated by an orchestra of whining in every voice but Trish’s.
Beast, as Burai so affectionately referred to it, was not helping the matter. The thing groaned in protest every time it was met with an incline, and despite Trish’s apparent skill in taming it, it felt as though it might simply give up at any moment. It wouldn’t, they all knew; Burai took good care of it. That was cold comfort for the long ride up. It felt less like a trip, and more like some novel form of torture.
“Ladies and gent—”
As the back door slid open, Tressa practically bolted into the open air. Or tried to, anyway. His desperate bid for freedom was interrupted by the body of an gray-quilled Gojid, playing the role of a suborbital flight attendant. Spikes slid across the flame-resistant fabric of Tressa’s coat, saving him from a painful impalement and leaving him stumbling and embarrassed.
“AH! Uh… s-sorry, Burai, I didn’t mean—”
“It’s fine.” Burai seemed more bothered by the forced break in his little performance than the high-impact Venlil slamming across his chest. “I know you’re desperate for some fresh air. Here, let me get out of your way.”
He stepped aside, dramatically sweeping his claw towards the now-open walkway and bowing slightly in a reprisal of his role. “Welcome to City 23, the twilight jewel of Venlil Prime. We hope you enjoy your stay!”
—
Massive concrete skyscrapers intertwined with glass and plastered with neon dominated the skyline, casting the streets below in a mixture of shadow and vibrant color. Roads and walkways weaved through the architecture like blood vessels through some strange inorganic beast, teeming with activity. Carefully maintained vegetation splashed natural color against the cold metal and unyielding concrete. And through it all, an eternal sunset cast soft illumination on every unshadowed surface. City 23’s upper layer was nothing less than an artistic statement, a crown jewel of the Federation’s empire.
While a compelling narrative about the Federation’s superiority, it had a few holes. The rectangular skyscrapers, for instance, were a distinctly human design, as were the shimmering panes of glass adorning them which acted as decoration more than functional windows. According to official Federation mandate, these architectural masterpieces were examples of the Venlil’s architecture, the masterwork of an emotional and artistic prey species which proved superiority over the predatory scum that they couldn’t help but tolerate due to their tragically overwrought empathy.
Below the bustling streets of City 23’s upper layer lay the dilapidated ruins of a counterargument. An old Venlil-built city; the lack of sunlight and state of ruin did it no favors, but even in its prime the city was hardly a marvel. Thick outer walls and barriers which divided the city into clean, ugly segments that could easily be quarantined in case of a predator attack spoke of a scared people who valued practicality over art. The pawful of new buildings speckling the sprawl were far more appealing despite their cheap construction; that they were built primarily by humans was hardly a secret. But nobody who lived up above in the new city which blotted out the sky would ever bother learning this. Why would they ever bother to leave? Despite its fraught history and muddled origins, the pristine beauty of the “twilight jewel” was undeniable.
Tressa found that his initial breathlessness at the glimmering city hadn’t abated during his long bout of musing, and quickly drew a breath before he passed out. The air tasted of vegetation, a sweet smell which felt almost overbearing for one used to the ash and grime of the sprawl. He took several more deep breaths, savoring the scent. The rest of the group was similarly awestruck; even Trish, who muttered a poem under her breath in lieu of showing her awe through body language. To an onlooker, the sight of an interspecies herd staring wide-eyed at the routine sight of city life must’ve been rather amusing.
Or it would have been amusing, were there anyone to observe it. Trish had set them down in a parking complex, shockingly quiet for its proximity to the spaceport. Having Beast at their backs shielded the posse from prying eyes, affording James and Sasha the rare luxury of breathing that fresh air without the masks that were mandatory for human visitors to the upper layer.
Of course, it couldn’t last. They had a job to do, and being arrested for civil disruption wasn’t part of it. The two slipped on masks which covered their “predatory” eyes and teeth. Unfortunately, without enabling the passthrough cameras, it also blinded them, a fact James was rather harshly reminded of when he tripped on his first step. He quietly muttered something about a muzzle, but his words were muffled by the mask; he’d forgotten to enable the microphone as well.
As they left the parking complex and walked out into the street, James’ complaints suddenly went silent. Tressa looked to see if they’d gotten separated, only to see a
thing which superficially resembled his human friend shambling behind them. His natural body posture had given way to a practiced imitation of a more timid stance, his head held low to not look anyone in the eye. Even though his face couldn’t be seen through the mask, Tressa knew he was wearing the vacant expression and incurious eyes that so many cured humans were marred with after extensive electroshocking.
He tried not to gag at the sight. Seeing James replaced by this mocking imitation of a human was nauseating, even as a mere disguise. He couldn’t bear to imagine how the first generation of cured humans felt, seeing loved ones crushed into lifeless husks by their Federation handlers and wondering if they could perform submission convincingly enough to not suffer the same fate. The humiliation alone would be enough to break most species.
Humanity, however, was not most species. Even in the face of a genocide bordering on speciocide, with so many of their people killed or maimed, they managed to maintain that spark of life. They found allies on Venlil Prime and refuge in remote colonies where the Federation’s grasp was distant. They made themselves too useful to kill outright, put on a face of passivity while preserving their culture in secret. While it was difficult to watch James play the part of a model human citizen, it
was nothing more than an act.
Sasha never bothered with an act. She held her head high. How she’d survived the Terran genocide with such an apparent distain for the powers that be was a mystery to Tressa, though he knew well enough not to ask her directly. She strode down the street, sweeping her covered eyes around in movements which Federation officials deemed “Predatory”. Biologically superior species had eyes which could see everything around them at once, and didn’t have to twist their heads around in a revolting motion just to get a good look. In their infinite wisdom and mercy, they’d tried to cure humans of the inclination; even provided them with a widened field of view through the mask’s cameras. If any exterminators saw Sasha rejecting their gift by looking around in a way that came naturally to her, there could be hell to pay.
Tressa patted down the side of his coat, making sure the pistol was there. It was. He relaxed marginally. The crowd didn’t seem to be taking any notice of their prideful human compatriot anyway. As long as they didn’t run into any authorities, they’d be fine. It wasn’t a long walk to the Rising Star anyway; they could get in, find the package tucked underneath some chair, get out, spend a while milling about the city to avoid drawing suspicion from any wayward surveillance algorithms that were supposed to be decommissioned years ago, and be on their way.
Sasha suddenly stopped. Being a full head taller than the rest of the crowd, she would naturally be the first to spot trouble. She craned her head forward to get a better look at something off in the distance, and swore quietly but audibly.
With no warning, she ducked her head low and veered off into a disused alleyway while motioning for the rest of the group to follow. A steady walk turned into a brisk jog, not stopping until she reached some sort of rusted-out balcony that opened up a view of the city ahead. She crouched down, retreating slightly into the shadows while making room for the rest of them to watch from the abandoned walkway.
She flicked her head as if to silently direct their vision, but the gesture was unnecessary. They could all see the problem, glinting in the eternal evening sun. A number of problems, actually; a small herd of Venlil in silver suits which swarmed around the base of the Rising Star hotel like flies. All armed to the teeth and moving in one sickening single motion as they covered ground, a precession of glittering grim reapers which stood directly between them and their target.
A patrol of Exterminators.

2023.05.31 16:18 lazylittlelady [Discussion] Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson---Chps. I-9 to 63
We get some more insight into all the characters in this exciting section! Welcome back to the discussion!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Links: Marginalia - best place to post anything outside of this section, especially if it's spolier-y!
Just a reminder, we take spoilers very seriously, especially in this series, so hide everything that needs it. To indicate a spoiler, enclose the relevant text with the > ! and ! < characters (there is no space in-between). Also, not everyone has read the Mistborn books, so mark those appropriately, as well.
This includes the discussion below. You have been warned! Schedule ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Summary: I-9: LIFT POV: Lift, Wyndle
- We are about to rob the Bronze Palace of the Azish with teenager Lift, her "Voidbringer" spren, Wyndle, and a gang of six others, while the Council is distracted in picking a new leader-Prime Aqasix.
- Lift is being stalked by a man in black- "Darkness" (yes, that killer is back). He is: Azish, dead eyes, white crescent mark on cheek, black uniform, silver buttons, silver collar, gloves up to forearms, has a Shardblade and has minions and an axehound-like creature that can suck in Stormlight and is not "above the law" and has all the paperwork and works in the name of "justice".
- Wyndle is a plant-like spren, who can grow vines, bloom from seeds and is between worlds and denies being a Voidbringer. He was assigned to Lift because "The Ring said we should choose you. 'She [Lift] has been visited by the Old Magic...Our mother has blessed her...She will be young, and we can mold her". He tells her she has the ability to manipulate friction-what Lift terms her "awesomeness"- and to grow and also regrow and can be an "Edgedancer".
- We learn Lift can power herself through food, and it's her heist of choice, as well as spheres. And she can partially enter the Cognitive Realm to "touch" spren and process food into Stormlight.
- The other thieves separate to thieve things and Lift is left with "Gaw", a young nephew of one of the thieves. She goes for stealing food and he follows her-and not just any food but the Prime's!
- Meanwhile, at the banquet, we learn the council isn't trying very hard to pick a successor.
- Someone defaced a painting with all the Heralds---
- As she sneaks into the banquet and is about to steal food, her nemesis arrives and snatches her. She temporarily escapes until she doesn't but a temporary distraction by the Vizier allows her to eat part of a roll. The others are being rounded up and she manages to get her awesomeness back and escapes until she realizes they have Gaw and she calls the guard's bluff only to have him kill Gaw in front of her.
- Lift gets away but then, because someone has to care, goes back to Gaw's body, remembering what Wyndle said she could do- "Regrow". She states: "I will remember those who have been forgotten" and reanimates Gaw back to life. Lift is an Edgedancer, and gets a pardon for her crime by Gaw, the new Prime Aqasix. Darkness backs off; praises "Yaezir, Herald of Kings". He [Yaezir] drools.
I-10: Szeth POV: Szeth
- Szeth is haunted by the souls of those he killed. He is in Urithiru, in the sun. A holy place where he can walk on stones. We learn he was here before when first exiled. He is thinking of Kaladin's abilities.
- We learn he was exiled for raising a false alarm that the Voildbringers are coming back. He contemplates the fact that he might have been right and the Shamanate wrong in exiling him. He might have killed all these people for no reason.
- He is on a mission to get answers. We learn there is village that leaves spheres out as an offering to him.
I-11: New Rythms POV: Eshonai and the Parshendi
- Eshonai is fifteen days into her new "Stormform". It's making her different and scaring some of the other forms. We learn she sings of "Rage" and other negative song. Her sister and she are at odds, trying to get control. Venli didn't tell her what would happen although she perhaps knew more.
- The screaming she hears is "Peaceform".
- There are only two Storms left before "Weeping" time, and Eshonai wants to convince the Five to let everyone take "Stormform". The first storm that passed gave Eshonai her powers and the second storm gave the same form to 200 new soldiers and her sister, Venli, and her scholars.
- The Five are skeptical about transforming everyone. They question her talks with the Alethi and Eshonai lies about what the conversation was about. The dullform member resists her plan.
- Eshonai bypasses the Five and makes a public announcement and demonstration of needing to take "Stormform" and willing to teach it to everyone.
- She rounds up those who don't want it, using her old soldiers, who also doubt her new form. Venli tells her they have to kill the dissenters.
- As she is about to take over the city, with 20,000 non-warriors and call on "Rhythm of Descruction", she learns the non-group escaped into the chasms, including her soldiers. She threatens Venli publicly before her speech.
Part IV: THE APPROACH Chapter 59: Fleet "I'll address this letter to my 'old friend', as I have no idea what name you're using currently" POV: Kaladin
- Kaladin is in jail; conditions are decent, but he feels trapped. He considers sucking in Stormlight from the lighting. Syl questions what he would do after escaping.
- Kaladin goes on a rant against Elhokar that depresses Syl.
- Wit (!) comes for a musical visit and sings to him of Fleet's race against the wind. Fleet dies but reaches glory in his attempt. He leaves him with a lesson to ponder.
Mosaic of Stormseat Chapter 60: Veil Walks "
Have you given up on the gemstone, now that it is dead? And you no longer hide behind the name of your old master? I am told that in your current incarnation you've take a name that references what you presume to be one of your virtues" POV: Shallan
- Shallan is working on her notes, based on the maps in Amaram's room. She is looking for the capital of Natanatan, Stormseat, which she, Amaram and Jasnah believe to be on the Shattered Plains. Furthermore, she believes there are 10 routes from 10 kingdoms, including a path to Urithiru using the Oathgates. She discusses this with Pattern.
- Shallan plants a quote to interest Sebarial into looking into the Shattered Plains, just in case the Adolin plan doesn't work while doing his books.
- Navani still won't meet with her.
- Pattern is learning dirty jokes and sarcasm. He also prompts her to admit the truth about what they did, what he can do, in order to prepare for the Everstorm. Shallan cries in recalling the past, which Pattern calls a "deep lie" she must shed to have her abilities.
- Shallan practices her skills, creating Veil and trying to add sound. Instead, she learns Pattern can hold Stormlight and animate her illusion and hide inside it.
Chapter 61: Obedience POV: Shallan-
1 and 1/2 years ago flashback - Shallan tries to be perfect so her father wouldn't be violent. However, he takes things out on others regardless. She gives humor and stories to her brothers.
- A marble deposit and a certain shrewdness have changed their family fortune.
- Their father forbids Balat from marrying his sweetheart, kills his axe hound puppies to prove a point but is enraged when Nan Balat mentions he met with Helaran, who is back. Balat has a plan to escape with his girlfriend and Shallan, if she will do it. She holds back.
- Their father has new guards and Shallan overhears him plotting Helaran's assassination. His second wife also intervenes to stop him and they have a fight.
Chapter 62: The One Who Kiled Promises "This is, I suspect, a little like a skunk naming itself for its stench" POV: Kaladin
- Kaladin is depressed. He thinks back on Moash's grandparents, who died in jail waiting for a trial.
- Syl mentions there was a "Cryptic" at the fight, which she described as "revolting" but not evil. She thinks that soon there will another Surgebinder like him. He suspects it might be Adolin but is happy he won't be the only one.
- Dalinar comes for a visit and they chat about the silversmiths in Kholinar (Moash's grandparents) and Roshone, who influenced a young Elhokar into making bad decisions. Roshone was also a liegeman to Sadeas. He was exiled when Dalinar returned.
- Dalinar urges Kaladin to look beyond Elhokar's weakness and be extra loyal in his protection. He reveals he followed his instinct in selecting Kaladin and his men and the way to change the social position of darkeyes is to effect change through example.
- The conversation leads Kaladin to conclude that Elhokar is an infected limb and must be cut off.
Chapter 63: A Burning World "Now, look what you've made me say. You've always been able to bring out the most extreme in me, old friend. And I do still name you a friend, for all that you weary me" POV: Shallan
- Flirting with Adolin, while staking out a spot the Ghostbloods directed her to, Shallan uses her image of Veil and a tree and Pattern and realizes she is being watched. She sends Pattern to find out who.
- It turns out to be the scary lady with the mask from the Ghostblood meeting. Shallan sends Pattern out as a decoy Veil and then, ambushes Iyatil, who is surprised. We learn Mraize is Iyatil's student!
- The Ghostbloods want to know about a person newly arrived in Dalinar's camp. They are worried about Dalinar's interactions with Amaram and this third party.
- Shallan takes Iyatil on her mission, secretly using her own actual appearance to gain entry as Adolin's fiancée, and then using Iyatil to distract the ardents while she gains entry to the room holding the mystery person.
- We learn the mystery person is dark skinned like a Makabaki, ragged hair and a powerful build. She copies down his message about the Desolation coming soon, which he recites in perfect Alethi and calls himself Talenel'Elin or Stonesinew.
- He freaks out when Shallan takes some Stormlight to put on her illusion and attacks her, calling her one of "Ishar's Knights" and Shallan calls her Shardblade but doesn't need it. Her mother's soul comes up.
- As she tries to escape (as herself), she runs into a crowd that includes Amaram.

2023.05.31 16:14 ReginaBicman Should I bring my senior country dog to the city with me?
I have a 13 yr old Cairn Terrier who’s my literal everything. I love him so much, I’ve had him since he was 12 weeks old, he was a welcome home gift from Afghanistan. Toto is my best friend. He’s old now, he has skin issues, and he’s going blind.
I live in the country with a house full of people, and recently bc of school I need to move to NYC. I’m super psyched, I’m happy, and excited, and I want to bring my dog with me bc I want him to spend his last few years with me. But he’s used to a crowded house with people and other pets around all time, like he’s literally NEVER been alone, when he has to go to the bathroom he just runs to the door and bc we have a (large) fenced in yard he’s allowed to just be let out and go whenever he needs, and he’s never been created because he didn’t need to be bc like I said, someone’s always been here to let him out.
With the city and just me it’ll be different. He’s not gonna have anyone when I’m at work or school, I have no idea how I’m gonna train him to wait until he gets on his leash when I get home, and he’s a country dog so we specifically trained him to bark whenever he hears something outside bc people and animals aren’t supposed to be walking by. Now we’re gonna be living in an apartment where EVERYONE is gonna be walking by and I’m gonna have to train him not to bark.
I’m just afraid I’m gonna ruin his golden years but I don’t wanna be without my dog, like… thirteen hears we’ve been together and I know he doesn’t have long (and now I’m crying so that’s awesome). And I don’t want him to spend his last years wondering why I don’t come home except every few months, like I don’t want my dog to hate me. Please give me some advice on what to do.
Thank you.

2023.05.31 16:03 Other-Cantaloupe4765 MegaKaren: The Entitled Witch Who Screamed At Me About “Her Rights,” Insulted Me, And Then Started Recording Me When I Told Her To Get Out
This one’s a doozy. Buckle up. It’s going to be a looong story, but it’s worth the read. We’ll call the woman “Karen” and her husband “Kent.” Let me just give you a mental image of these people. Kent looks like the average middle-aged guy. T-Shirt, Jeans, Old tennis shoes. Karen is the pinnacle of all that’s ever been categorized as a Karen. Her foundation was way too dark and orange for her skin tone. Her hair was thin and bleached blonde, and she had some kind of “crackhead pigtails” thing going on. She obviously had done Botox and gotten a LOT of fillers in her cheeks. She’s also middle-aged. Kind of like Dolly Parton’s face except a bit narrower and with Donald Trump’s complexion (ie caked in orange foundation) and hair color.
Okay. I’d already dealt with one entitled woman who yelled at me during that shift, so I wasn’t having the greatest day, but I was just taking it in stride. Until Karen and her husband Kent came in.
Kent was the one who came to the desk. He was a walk-in, and it was Memorial Day weekend with 3 rooms left to sell. One double room on the first floor and two suites on the upper floor. Kent talked over me and opted for the double, which was $10 cheaper than a suite, but it was also a pet room on the ground floor (our pet friendly floor, while 2 and 3 were pet-free). I tried to tell him all the standard stuff, but he was like “yeah yeah I just want the room,” and wouldn’t listen, so whatever. Here’s your key.
He goes to his room with Karen, and everything is great. For about 20 minutes. Kent comes back out and says he can hear someone’s dog occasionally barking. Okay, I get it, listening to a barking dog is annoying af. People aren’t supposed to leave their pets in the room alone anyway. I apologized and said I’d call the guest and see what I could do. I offered to move him to another room on the upper floors, and he said, “no, we’re not moving. We shouldn’t have to. People with dogs should have to move.”
“Er, everyone has dogs down that hallway.”
“Can’t you move them all to the other end of the hall?”
For a second, I thought he was joking. No. He was not. Holy entitled, Batman. No, no I can’t. And I won’t.
I told him I’d do what I could to get ahold of the guest who owned the dog. He went back to his room. And came out five minutes later to ask if I’d done anything (mind you the dog had stopped barking at this point). I said I couldn’t get ahold of the guest, and I again offered him another room. He said, “no, I told you we’re not moving. They have to move.”
Ugh. Whatever. He goes back to his room. 15 minutes later, he comes back out with Karen. Karen says, “okay, this is ridiculous. We didn’t pay to hear someone’s dog moving around and making noise. You need to tell people that there are dogs in here.”
“It’s a pet friendly hotel.”
“Well you need to tell people that.”
“It’s on the big sign outside, it’s on our website, there are signs about dogs on the walls around the hotel, and it was written on the paper you signed and initialed when you checked in.”
“Well they shouldn’t be prioritized over people.”
She stared at me like she was waiting for me to say something, but idfk what she expected me to say. I just shrugged and said, “it’s a pet friendly hotel.”
“OKAY, but we’re PEOPLE and we PAID TO STAY HERE.”
“So did the guests with pets??? They paid for a room and paid the pet fee to stay here!”
“WE HAVE RIGHTS, AND WE ARE YOUR PRIORITY- NOT PEOPLE WITH DOGS. PEOPLE ARE PRIORITIZED OVER ANIMALS.”
“Yeah well, pet owners have rights too.”
“Aren’t you a snobby fucking BITCH. Getting smart-mouthed with me like you’re not supposed to be prioritizing us over animals. You can stop with the smart-mouthed bitchy attitude right now.”
“And you can leave. Now.”
Omg the look that flashed across her face as she spluttered in surprise for a second was priceless.
“No. We aren’t leaving.”
“Get out. Now.”
“No, give us the other room.”
“No. Get OUT. NOW.”
“But you just offered us another room!”
“I did. And then you got nasty and started screaming and insulting me, so now I’m telling you to leave. Go.”
“NO, YOU’RE GOING TO GIVE US THE OTHER ROOM.”
“If you don’t leave, I will call the police and have you escorted off the property.”
And then… fuck, this is the part that makes me so fucking pissed I swear my soul momentarily left my body to make room for the sheer rage that coursed through me.
This bitch whipped out her phone to record me. Which is illegal in my state.
“Give us the room.”
“Get out. Are you recording me?”
“Yes! That’s what you get when you’re a snobby little BITCH.”
She was so happy with herself, like she’s some kind of fucking genius dealing out some groundbreaking vigilante justice to her cruel oppressors.
“I can call my manager or call the cops. Pick one or get out.”
At that point, Karen went fucking berserk and just started screaming and screeching until her orange face turned red. Screaming about how they should be prioritized and I’m such a fucking bitch smart-mouthed snotty snobby asshole and they were getting that room blah blah blah. Tons of insults and shit.
My brain was kind of like “yeah fuck this shit,” so I was standing behind the desk calmly and sarcastically saying, “yep. Uh huh. Uh huh. Sure. Yep.” As she was screaming at me.
I reiterated her choices. She demanded my name and my manager (what a surprising turn of events). I cheerfully said, “I’ll write it down for you!” But that didn’t stop her from demanding I tell her my name a million times. My guess is she wanted me to say it on video. Kent told me to “go call your manager.”
I went back to the office, shut the door, called my manager, and just burst into tears as soon as she picked up. All the stress and emotion I’d held in to keep it together just came out behind closed doors. I said I needed her to come in. I could barely explain why. Just “there are these two CUNTS at the desk screaming at me and recording.”
“Okay okay, it’s okay, let me get dressed and I’ll be right in.”
I tried to stop crying and pull it together before opening the door. I stopped for a second and heard Karen telling another family that came in what a total bitch I was. I opened the door and said, “okay she’s on her way, have a seat.”
“When will she be here”
“Soon, have a seat.”
“We are not going any-“
“I SAID, HAVE. A. SEAT.”
She stopped talking and jerked her head back and said, “you really do have a snobby, bitchy attitude problem, don’t you.”
They went back to their room. The family that witnessed the tail end of it just looked at me like I was a piece of shit whenever they saw me for the rest of their stay.
My manager came in, and I was just in hysterics. Crying and couldn’t breathe to tell her what happened. I managed to grind out the beginning of it before Karen comes out to the desk.
“Your EMPLOYEE refused us a room.”
“Really? Because from what I heard, you refused a room that she offered to you.”
“But then we wanted it and she said no”
“That’s what happens when you yell at my front desk agents.”
“SHE was yelling at US. I have a VIDEO.”
“Yes, she said you were recording her, which I’m not okay with. I don’t care if you have a video.”
“Why don’t you come around the desk to talk to us.”
“No. Talk to me across the desk.”
“You’re being very rude- just come around the desk to talk to us”
“This desk is between us for my protection. I don’t know what you’ll do.”
Karen huffed and shoved her phone in the manager’s face to show her the video. I was back in the office, but from what I heard, the face she made when she realized she hadn’t actually been recording the entire time and only got about 30 seconds where she’s yelling and I’m saying “yep uh huh…”. It must’ve been fucking priceless.
My manager eventually gave them another room, which I was pissed af about. Why reward them for their bad behavior? This is why they act this way in the first place- nobody tells them no. Karen was a total cunt- why does she get to stay??
At least my manager told them that they were not to bother me, not to speak to me, not to harass me like that. You can have the room, but you don’t bother my front desk agent again. They kept their side of it, apparently. My manager hung around until they were in the new room and my Ativan was kicking in. I didn’t hear another word from them, didn’t see them again, for the rest of the night.
But they needed some kind of slap on the wrist out of the ordeal at the very least. I was pissed they were staying. So before I went home, I set up a few wake-up calls for their room. 2am, 3am, and 4am. I’m told she didn’t say a thing about it.
Fuckin Karen.

I'm looking to rent a room or an apartment in the lehigh valley that's dog friendly. I'm open for a roommate too. I'm going through a divorce and i cannot live on my own with one income. Im a QA specialist for a local pharmaceutical company and also have a background in dog training. I have the best well behaved dog you'll ever meet. I'm not in the best living situation right now and i need out. I have a 16 month old son so i can't move far. He currently lives with his mother and won't be over often. Allentown is out of the question unless it's in the suburbs and not the shitty center city row homes. Ill be homeless before i live there. Please spread the word for me! Thanks

Hills Furrow
At the center of the Valley sits a patch of small grassy hills, through which the Slow Water meanders through. Built into these hills is the Village of Hills Furrow. Celebrated by everyone living in The Valley and boasting a whopping population of almost 150, Hills Furrow is the center of commerce and social importance. Well, at least as far as the locals are concerned. Realistically it would be less than a blip on the grand scale of things, a mere kernel of wheat in the silo of civilization, but to those who live here, there is nothing quite like living in the “city”.
The Village itself, like the Valley, is predominantly Halfling, and their fancy dwellings are burrowed into the hillsides as often as possible. These dwellings have been family owned for generations only becomeing available if there are no heirs to pass them along to. Other folk live in well kept two story shingled buildings, most of which house a business on the lower floor and house the Shopkeepers and their families above their workplaces, though a few live in nearby homes. There aren’t many “rental” spaces in town, as property is usually bought up quickly by the Halfling Families, but there are long term options at either of the Inns in town.
Hills Furrow: Locations 1) The Crocked Crow (Inn and Tavern) 2) The Dancing Lamb (Inn and Tavern) 3) The Moaning Toad (Tavern) 4) Granny's Groceries (General Market) 5) Get Nailed (Hardware and Distilery) 6) Gimdurh's Hammer (Smithy) 7) Brenra's Mechanicals (Tinker) 8) Hjoldren's Home Goods (Carpenter) 9) Standard Industries (Office) 10) Fit to be Dyed (Tailor) 11) The Last Loaf (Baker) 12) The Cloudy Cleaver (Butcher) 13) Nature's Medecine (Apothecary) 14) Sheriff's Office 15) Green Valley School House 16) The Waterwheel 17) The Windmill 18) The Undercloak Estate 19) Truefoot Burrow 20) The Meadows Family Hill
The locals are hospitable and friendly enough, but they do not really trust outsiders. Folks from foreign places are good for trade, news, and little else. Those that come through are treated well enough as long as they don’t wear out their welcome. Locals, well, that’s a bit of a different story. The city and area doesn’t operate under a written caste system or social structure, but there is clearly a pecking order, and family heritage matters a great deal to folks in Hills Furrow. Most locals, whether they’ve gotten an education or not, can easily be classified as simple. It isn’t that they are slow of mind or unintelligent, but more that they are unconcerned with matters the outside world considers important. This sentiment has created a general, but friendly, dislike between those that consider themselves Highfalutin and those that clearly are not.
Well now that I've given you the fifty cent tour. Shall we get on to adventure?
CHAPTER 1: Green Tide
We will open our journeys in the Green Valley at Green Tide, the annual celebration of Winter’s End. This adventure is designed to give a tour of Hills Furrow and introduce them to the locals. It will begin with some chores around their house to prepare for the festival and end with a battle involving an enchanted broom. If you did not do Session Zero, this chapter may take a bit longer as we get to know everyone and their characters.
ACT 1: Pre-Festival
The locals spend the week cleaning out their houses and farms. They gather old junk and unused items to be used later in the festival. They also begin preparing what food is left from winter to be used in a celebration and feasts.
Things to do! - Have the Players clean up junk around the house - Have them Find something strange (Perhaps used for a later mystery?) - Have them Decorate their Broom - Have them run a Household Errand (Meet an NPC)
ACT 2: Sweeping Day
A merry festival celebrating Spring cleaning and putting the past behind them. They form a parade, with one member from each house carrying a brightly decorated broom and using it to symbolically “Sweep Away Winter”. The rest of the family marches their winter’s trash and unused goods down to the Fairgrounds. The goods are often traded, while the trash is piled in the fire pit to await burning later. The entire day is filled with fun outdoor activities. Households also symbolically bring their problems to the bonfires to burn them later.
Things to do! - March in the Parade - Carry Junk to the Bonfire - Meet more of the Locals
EVENT: I Love a Parade The parade will march North from near the Cross Roads in the South up around the hill and back again to the South where it will head for the Fairgrounds. There isn’t anything particularly challenging about this event, but it would be a wonderful place to start leaning into or building local rivalries.
EVENT: Never Seen a Broom Do That… As they come into the home stretch of the Parade one of the local’s Brooms will animate and take off. It will chase folks around the parade. The players can attempt to stop it, but the broom will flee soon after being attacked. It will fly up into the air, attack a flock of geese, and chase them off until it can’t be seen anymore. They can go and collect a fallen goose if they wish. I highly recommend giving it a motorcycle type sound as it flies around hitting folks. Maybe even going as far as giving it a rough gravel angry voice and letting it insult people.
ACT 3: Winter’s End
Winter’s End is a Combination of Groundhog’s Day and Fasnacht, this day gets a little wild. The Festival kicks off at dawn with the Great Gopher Hunt. Gophers are well known spies for The Voice of Winter and thus need to be hunted before they can tell The Voice to delay Spring. Gophers themselves are quite tasty, and are notoriously bad for crops, so this works out economically all around. Throughout the rest of the day families continue to contribute to the Bonfire Pile which often gets quite large. At dusk a large effigy of The Voice of Winter is placed on top of the pile. Once the sun has fully set they light the fire and burn the Effigy. Folk usually dress darkly during the day and brightly at night. After the burning they feast on sweets and treats that were made from goods saved up from winter storage.
Things to do! - The Great Gopher Hunt - Carry Junk to the Bonfire - Meet more of the Locals - The Fairground’s Activities
EVENT: The Great Gopher Hunt The Hunt begins at dawn and takes place all over the Valley. Locals race to collect as many Gophers as possible. It is easiest to kill the Gopher, but there are some that find that distasteful. Instead they live trap the critters. It is a bit tougher to do so, but an option should your players wish. This is most easily played out as a series of appropriate Skill Checks, in which the higher they score the more gophers they obtain.
EVENT: Trash Removal They may find some locals willing to pay them to help cart junk down to the bonfire pile. Not a lot of skill involved in this, but it is a great opportunity to meet locals, and you could throw a runaway cart at them.
Fair Activities They will probably want to take part in Fairground Activities. Players love these types of challenges. Here are a few ideas you can build on. - Axe Throwin: Basic attack rolls on a Round Target. Higher scores equal Higher points. - Bow Shootin: Basic attack rolls on Moving Targets. Higher scores equal Higher points. - Pig Chasin: Catch the greased Pig! Medium DC Challenge requiring three success before three Failures. - Mud Wrastlin: Nothing says bumpkin like a good Mud Wrastlin Pit. Contested Skill Challenges. - Sausage Eating Contest: Increasingly difficult DC Challenge. Eat till you puke! Can also be Pies or Ribs or Little Fish… you know whatever someone wants to stuff dozens of in their gullet. - Tug O’War: Team Strength Challenge. Three to Five Contested Rolls with opposing teams. - Gopher BBQ Cook Off: A Hard Culinary Challenge to see who can BBQ the best Gopher! - Races: Foot and Mount Races based on Three to Five Contested Rolls. I usually include a few odd mounts like a Giant Chicken or some such nonsense.
ACT 4: Day of Ashes
The Day of Ashes is a day of rest, recovery, and reflection. Locals take the ashes from the bonfires and rub their hands in them to symbolize the end of a hard year’s work and hardships of the past. The day ends with a large family feast, typically Pork. Activities this day are light, but many folks head to the Temple for the Calling of Spring Blessings. They put on their fancies and head down to ask forgiveness for over-indulging in the festival and for worship. Well sort of…
Unfortunately, a lot of folks take this as an opportunity to peacock about and practice their one-upmanship over other locals. If you’re looking for inspiration for their outfits look to older photos of the Kentucky Derby. Over the years this troubling practice has caused more than one fight to break out after the service.
*
Things to do! * - Go to Temple and Meet More Locals - Pick a Local Patron!
EVENT: Temple Services The majority of the town comes to Temple on this day. The service is usually longer, and a bit more “Where have most of you been all year?” But otherwise it is a call for the Divine Blessings to touch their crops and protect their lives. It ends with a ceremony in which the locals put their hands into the ashes from yesterday’s bonfire. Once services end they will head outside, where the trouble will begin. Two of the wealthier families will get into it with each other. Starting with a couple of veiled insults, probably before service and continuing afterward. If one of your players is from a local Rich Folk family then they can be right in the middle of it all, otherwise they will have to pick a side. This choice will determine their house Patron moving forward. Tension will increase until folks start drawing up sides, and then someone will throw a rotten tomato at one of the House Matrons. That will blow the lid off the incident and a yokel brawl will break out. For comedy purposes I recommend the instant appearance of several food carts filled with expired products, and maybe a six year old hustler selling big sticks for wacking folks with. As the locals brawl call for perception checks. Who ever rolls highest begins to hear… The Broom returning!
ENCOUNTER: Stick In The Eye The broom returns ready to whoop some ash. It will be absolutely bent on cleaning anyone and everyone who is even the slightest bit dirty! If it successfully attacks a character they will have to make a Strength Saving throw or be knocked to the ground and swept clean by the broom. As this would be an awful omen for the year folks are terrified and will be running around screaming. Absolute mass hysteria. If the players were lucky enough to hear it coming they can avoid being surprised by the broom. Otherwise the broom will get a full round to attack before they have a chance to do anything. They’ll have to beat the broom into submission any way they can before it sweeps the whole town into chaos!
CLOSING
After defeating the broom things will settle back down again. Bumpkins are quick to return to normal when things go awry. However, they will have gotten the attention of one of the Wealthy Families in the area and be offered jobs. Which family is really, based on what will work best for them and you as the DM. For gags you might be tempted to have the Yokels pick them up, but that is a hard bit to sustain, and you may be better served keeping them on the side as a comic foil rather than up front. Completely up to you. The session should end with them being invited to meet their new patron tomorrow someplace important.
CHAPTER 2: A Cartload of Chickens
After successfully defeating the Enchanted Broom, our Bumpkins have gained the attention of a possible local Patron. This individual has summoned them to a nearby farm to discuss future work. That work includes proving themselves capable and not just lucky.
ACT 1: Meet the Boss
In this Act the players will meet with their new patron, one of the Family Heads, who that is entirely depends on their choices from the last game. This entire side branch is designed to flavor the background of the campaign, but if you’d rather just have them stay freelancing and independent that’s fine as well. There is also the possibility of “competing” offers should they have second thoughts for any reason. Once they arrive at the meeting spot their Patron will ask them some questions about their ambitions (Class Goals), they will then hand them off to their new “boss” who will assign them their task. They will take them to a nearby barn.
NPC: “Boss” Needs a fitting name for the Family they work for... Character wise, what we got here is a standard “Ranch Foreman” character. They’re tough, A little mean, and completely loyal to their employer. They almost certainly chew tobacco (by the handful), have a tattoo of the Ranch’s Brand, and know where all the bodies are buried. They also have a huge and obvious scar on the side of their head where a Giant Chicken pecked a hole in their skull, so they’re not as bright as they used to be, not at all truthfully. Nor are they actually the Foreman anymore, but no one has a heart to tell them. They’ve been quietly downgraded to Chicken Handler, which is something they seem to remember quite well, but the brain damage keeps them from realizing all that. They can be found wandering the Farm giving strange orders to other Hands. These Hands nod politely and then go back to what they are doing.
Things To Do! - Meet Their Patron - Discuss Their Future - Meet Their New “Boss”
ACT 2: Chicken Dance
Boss will lead them into the odd looking barn. This building is filled with Giant Chickens. These two-three foot fouls have extremely exaggerated features, spiky looking beaks with sharp tooth like edges, big darting eyes, bumpy cracked skin, long gnarled talons, and dirty mottled feathers. They’re more beast than bird. But, they’re good for eatin! These creatures should have a stat block similar to an Axe Beak. When the players enter into the Barn the Chickens will go nuts, obviously deeply bothered by the intrusion. Boss will throw in some deer haunches and the birds will tear them apart in a feeding frenzy. They will then put on a Chicken Suit and begin a flapping dance. (Google Magnificent Riflebird) It should be absolutely captivating and the chickens will become mesmerized, watching every move. Boss will then load two dozen chickens onto a large wagon and lock it. They will have the players push the wagon out while he keeps the Chickens calm. Once outside they’ll hang heavy tarps on the sides of the wagon, and remove the suit. He will then explain to them that they need to keep the tarps on the wagon, and keep the birds well fed, or the chickens will get restless and become violent. When they do need to interact with them someone will have to wear the suit and dance to keep them calm. The bigger the person in the suit the better. Boss will then give them a Map of Green Valley and instruct them to drop off two chickens at each of the outer settlements. They have two days to get this done.
Things To Do! - Head into the barn - Witness The Dance of The Chicken - Push the Wagon out - Get the Costume and Delivery Instructions
ACT 3: Bumpy Roads
They will be off to deliver the Chickens to various locations. There is no specific order to this delivery, they just need to pick a route and go. If they’re short on time they can take the country roads that lead between the outer settlements, but these aren’t as well kept as the main roads are. Whatever road they take and wherever they decide to stop for the night there are problems they will encounter along the way. You can make them random or pick the ones that best suit your players. Most of these should at some point require someone putting on the suit and dancing for the chickens to keep them calm. I would also increase the difficulty of each event. If they fail a dance the Chickens will become restless and start attacking the cart until they are calmed down. Too many failures and the wagon’s cage will break and the remaining chickens escape. They will then have to be rounded up and the cage repaired.
Things to Do! - Decide the delivery route - Deliver the chickens - Keep the Chickens calm
Possible Road Events 1) Rough roads cause problems 2) Yokels attempt to see what’s in the cart 3) Bad Weather swamps the road or scares the chickens 4) Pack of Coyotes causes trouble. 5) Chicken Rustlers! Protect the Flock! 6) Wagon breaks and needs repair 7) Cows in the road, someone’s herd is out. 8) Broken Bridge, not gone, just broken
ACT 4: Final Delivery
They’re now closing in on the final delivery. Something needs to happen here to cause them to put the suit on. Or maybe they never took it off! I love that idea, that one of your players just loves the suit and wants to be a chicken… lol… Anyway I’m a fan of having them need to get out of the suit for some reason, maybe a bathroom break, or they stand on a fire ant hill, or a snake slithers up their leg. You know something silly and fun. BUT the zipper is stuck! So they’ll have to try and unstick it and fast! Whatever happens they’re going to get shot at by some hunters looking for a big score who have mistaken the flailing caused by the stuck zipper to be the chicken attacking. After dealing with the Hunters they can go ahead and make the final drop. And head home.
Things to Do! - Head for the final delivery - Get shot at! - Deliver the last chickens
ENCOUNTER: That’s a BIG Chicken! Having two hunters in the field is more than enough to cause a problem for the players. The hunters will almost certainly surprise the players, but you can allow them a perception check, if they succeed they’ll see the hunters just before the muskets go off. It would be OK to down the Chicken Player here if the hunters successfully hit it. They’ll have healer’s kits on hand because, well, this seems to happen to them a lot out here. After the initial attack the players can decide to attack back or try and talk the hunters down. A basic Bandit or Scout stat block should do will for the hunters. If you’re looking for a bit more mayhem, if the hunters miss the players you could have them hit the cage, and you know, bust it open. This may be especially tempting if they
POSSIBLE ENCOUNTER: Big Ol' Frog So there is a giant frog hiding in the mud down in the creek. If a player takes cover behind the banks there is a good chance that the frog will attempt to nab the player as a snack. If it is successful in grabbing a player with its tongue it will immediately head down river, and they'll have to chase it to get their friend back.
CLOSE
When they return, Boss will reward them. How much will depend on how successful they were delivering the birds. If they did a descent job, they will be paid two day’s wages each. If they were completely successful they can have a bonus. However, if the wagon is in bad shape they might have some money deducted. After they’re paid out, they will be dismissed, and told to expect a new assignment next week.
CHAPTER 3: Marvin the Magnificent
After successfully delivering chickens Boss is going to trust them with a more important task. Their employer has requested an item to be created by Marvin the Magnificent. This is a farming community so having enchanted Farming Equipment is extremely desirable. Marvin has done a lot of basic enchantments over the years, but this new one, an The Stone Skipper, a plough whose blade goes ethereal while in contact with stones too large to push away, has really put him to the test. He needs some help with the final enchantments. The players will have to travel to the Ethereal Plane and hit the Blade of the plow with large rocks. But there’s a problem, they’re going to have mischievous Ethereal Sprites attempting to stop them! If they’re successful, which they should be, they get to take the plough for a test drive, and deal with the strange side effects of the enchantment. Angry goats that blink in and out of existence.
ACT 1: To the Tower
They’ll be summoned out to the Ranch where they’ll meet with Boss again. Once there they will notice a large pile of bent and dinged up plows. Boss will explain to them that a recent land acquisition has become problematic. The Fields are filled with large stones just under the topsoil and they’ve damaged a lot of Plow Blades. The Smithing costs are getting out of hand and so their Patron is looking for an alternate solution to the problem. He is sending them to help Marvin the Magnificent, who has taken the job, but run into some complications and needs some help. They may ask about Marvin. Or perhaps the fields that were purchased, so be ready to answer these types of questions. Once they’re done here they can head to Marvin’s Tower, which is just north of town.
Things to Do! - Meet Boss again - Ask some Informational Questions - Head for the Tower
NPC: Marvin the Magnificent Marvin Boudenbaum, AKA Marvin the Magnificent, has lived in town a good number of years, he wasn’t born here but is considered local by most folk. He is a mage of some skill, having mastered spells up to level 3 spells, and is frequently hired by locals to use his magic for anything and everything that their bumpkin brains can cook up. Thing is… Marvin has extraordinary bad luck, so bad in fact that his spellwork has a tendency to go wrong. Typically, it doesn’t go wrong in a dangerous fashion, but there was that time little Timmy Proudfoot was flung into the Astral Sea. Marvin was about to be sentenced for Negligent Magic Murdering when Timmy was suddenly returned by Captain Jinny Steampipe of the Atomic Dustbin (An Astral Spell Ship). Timmy was ok and Jinny and crew spent a few weeks spending some money and telling everyone in town amazing stories of the Astral Sea, so all was forgiven. Marvin, has since taken to having anyone who hires him sign liability waivers, you know just in case. He lives in a small tower just outside of town to the North.
ACT 2: Marvin the Magnificent
As they approach the tower they should see an explosion at the peak of the structure. It should look similar to a fireworks mishap. When it clears there will be no visible damage to the tower, But Marvin will plummet to the earth just off to the side of them, landing in a small pond. He will then come charging out of the pond, laughing hysterically, and riding on a large turtle. Once he gets a few feet away from the pond the turtle will disappear and he will tumble to the ground right in front of the players. He will leap up quickly and turn toward the players. “Behold Travelers, You stand in the presence of Marvin the Magnificent! And everything you have witness was mostly intended!” He will then strike a cool pose with his wand pointed to the sky! “Now why do you approach my tower!?”
Once Marvin finds out they’ve been sent about the plow he will become more nervous looking. “I see, well follow me. We have work to do.” He will then start walking toward the tower… his boots squishing out water. This should give them a little time to ask a few questions. Marvin will be a little subversive about what they need to do. He will attempt to frame it very mysteriously, saying things like “All will be revealed soon.” and “Save your questions! All Answers await us… in the future!” If they ask him about what they witnessed outside, he will tell them he was working on a mount summoning spell designed for lakes and rivers.
Things to Do! - Head toward the Tower - Meet Marvin - Ask Questions
ACT 3: The Cabinet of Mysteries
The inside of the Wizard’s Tower will be far more mundane than they likely expect. At least on the first floor. It will have a sitting room, dining room, and kitchen, as well as a few odds and ends about. Nothing special at all. The second floor, are Marvin’s personal quarters and some room for study, but it is the third floor, where Marvin will lead them, and it will be more of what one would expect in a Wizard’s tower. There will be books shelves, arcane equipment, and storage for components. In the middle of the room will be a tall cabinet.
Marvin will explain to them that the Cabinet is a transportation device, and that he will need them to enter into it with a plow that he has recently enchanted. They will be taken to the Ethereal Plane, and once there they’ll need to take the plow outside and begin hitting it with large field stones. There is a large pile of stones just on the north edge of the tower. They’ll have to do this quickly, before the “others” show up. Who are the others? Hard to say, but there are things that live in the Ethereal Plane that don’t like intruders. The idea is to imbue the Plow with Ethereal Powers so it can pass through large stones while plowing fields. Once they return with the Enchanted Plow, Marvin will have them load it on a cart, pulled by a very smart Donkey, and send them on their way.
Skill Challenge: Enchant the Plow This skill challenge will require five successes before they’re incapacitated by the others. However they decide to do it, they’ll have to successfully hit the plow with five large stones. Failures will result in strange indiscernible entities attacking them. They do minimal damage but could knock people out if there are enough failures.
Things to Do! - Move Through Marvin’s Tower - Enter the Cabinet - Enchant the Plow
ACT 4: Blinking Goats
Upon returning to Boss with the Plow they will be happily greet and paid. Their Patron will be there and will be very pleased with their success. He will ask them to demonstrate the plow’s abilities. Once they get set up out in the field and begin plowing something weird will happen. Every time they hit a stone and the plow’s power activates an Ethereal Goat will manifest and kick or ram the plow, and then disappear. It will feel very similar to what they encountered in the Ethereal Plane. They’ll have to find a way to deal with the manifestations.
ENCOUNTER: Ethereal Goats These goats should function very similarly to Blink Dogs, but I would trim the HP and AC a little to put them in line with the party’s. They will be intent on breaking the Plow not the party, although they will attack the party if they can’t get to the Plow.
Things to Do! - Deliver the Plow - Drive the Plow - Defeat the Ethereal Goats
CLOSE
Once defeated the Boss will come over to yell at them, but the Patron will find the entire thing amusing and more importantly, another impressive demonstration of the player’s skills. He will invite them to the “House” for an important party next week.
CHAPTER 4: High Society
They've definitely been noticed now and have impressed with their ability, unconventional as it may be. They are invited to their patron's home, but not as guests. Though, they might think they were actually invited as guests! They have been brought in to help work the event held out at the Party Field. They will have to gather party supplies, help put up the tent, and then serve the actual guests. During the evening’s entertainment a hypnotist “The Great Dr Hypnotika” will mesmerize the crowd and attempt to rob them all. Hopefully the players don’t fall victim to her schemes. And if they do oh well, they’ll be entertained all the same.
ACT 1: Special Delivery
The players arrive at the Patron’s very nice property. They will be greeted by a properly dressed servant with a clipboard, the Party Planner. The Planner will be rigid and direct. They will immediately begin tasking them about. If they mention that they were invited to the party the servant will laugh “You didn’t think you were a guest? Oh dear, how embarrassing. You’re the help! It is still a great honor to be tasked to help at the Party, but you’re not guests. Now as for your current task. Head into town and gather these supplies. Bring them to the field by noon.” After the instructions are given the servant will go back to their tasks and expect the players to do the same. They will have three stops; The Crocked Crow for Food and Beer, Get Nailed for the Tent and Spirits, and Shalana Proud-Breed’s Tailor Shop to pick up the Dry Cleaning. Feel free to make any and all of these go sideways! Its a good place to toss in some shenanigans as well! They should also be introduced to Dr Hypnotika and her associates.
Things To do! - Go to their Patron’s Home - Meet the Party Planner and Dr Hypnotika - Run their Errands
NPC: Dr Hypnotika Dr Hypnotika and her group will perform for the party. Hypnotica is a Tiefling Mezmerist and illusionist. She has an obnoxiously high charisma and some pretty serious skills to back up her claims. However, she uses those skills to beguile her guests, robbing them blind while they are under her spells. She wears a fine robe with a bedazzled headwrap. She has dark upward spiraling horns, light purple skin, and matching eyes. She wears a monocle and walks with a ceremonially carved staff depicting the "Struggles of the Universe". She is extremely persuasive and even more deceptive. Even if someone were to grow suspicious she can easily talk her way out of trouble.
NPCs: Clapper and Bob Hypnotika brings with her two assistants. Clapper the suit wearing Kenku who will perform wondrous displays of mimicry and slight of hand, and her strongman Bob the Kobold. Bob wears a leopard print strongman's outfit and is amazingly swole, particularly for a kobold, and capable of lifting upwards of 400lbs. Bob doesn't do much else other than get hit with things. in the act.
ACT 2: Put up the Tent
After they finish running their errands they will be tasked with putting up a large party tent. This Act is an ongoing Skill Challenge and should have a constantly distracted feel to it. First they have to unpack the tent. Then they have to realize some pieces are missing, they’ll have to form a solution to that problem. After that wind should cause some problems as the tent is at least being pulled up. This is a great moment for some wondrous tom-foolery.
Things To do! - Unpack the tent - Deal with missing parts - Secure the tent during the wind gusts
ACT 3: Put These On
After they finish putting up the tent they’ll be sent to the Servant’s Quarters to bathe and change. They’ll get a little time to explore and snoop if they wish. Afterward they’ll be tasked with helping in the kitchen, but unfortunately the cooks are going to have been playing a drinking game all afternoon and are no longer fully capable of doing their jobs. This would make a great moment for some sort of mini-game where the players have to determine whether or not the cooks are doing the right things. Once the dinner has been completed they will have to serve the guests. This is a good place to insert gossip and help them meet a few other folks.
Things To do! - Get changed for the party - Deal with the drunk cooks - Serve the guests drinks and food
ACT 4: An Evening to Remember
At some point in the evening things are going to start sliding downhill. Some of the locals will have become extremely inebriated and will need to be encouraged to leave, or just moved off to the side as they’ve already passed out, before the show begins. Once the show begins the locals will become fixated on the goings on. “The Great Dr Hypnotika” will have put an additive in the drinks for the that will make everyone more susceptible to her powers of persuasion. Once the show starts she will have them all doing silly things, those who drank have disadvantage on saves against her powers. She will end the show asking the guests to display their most valuable treasure, a with a hypnotic pattern and then send her assistants out to collect those treasures. The players will have to “do something” about the thieves.
Things To do! - Deal with Drunks - Watch the Show - Stop the Criminals
ENCOUNTER: Hypnotika's Gang This encounter doesn't have to be a fight. If Hypnotika is caught she may claim it was all part of the act and simple return the valuables with a "no harm, no foul" type attitude. This will be he go to in an attempt to avoid a fight, but if the character persist in some kind of retribution or punishment the situation will devolve into a combat. Hypnotica herself is an Illusionist Wizard but is low on spells after the show. Clapper is a low level rogue and Bob a Barbarian, and should play out as such. Even with Skills they are combat adverse and will be looking for an opportunity to flee rather than fight. They do have a getaway wagon out front that they'll be headed for if things go south.
CLOSE
We’re assuming the Bumpkins at least attempted to stop the robbery. This will draw a lot of attention to them. Their Patron will be well pleased with them, and let them know they will be getting much more important jobs in the future. The guests will also take note and will begin treating them all a bit better. They’re all essentially Folk Heroes at this point for secondary backgrounds. Their Patron should reward them with something very nice as the party kicks back in. They will need to finish out the nights work of course.
QUEST-LINE CLOSING
Congratulations! Your Players have completed their first Quest-line! Hopefully it was a delightful experience. But now that they've finished what comes next? Well, here are some ideas.
Reward Them! They've been doing some rather Adventurous things lately, and therefore should now have a Class Level under their belt, so the real D&D world now opens to them! Maybe it is time for some real adventuring gear. No more sticks, stones, and burlap sack armor.
Folk Heroes? There's a good chance that the Valley is Speaking the News about them and their exploits while drinking in the taverns. They may have even earned the actual Folk Hero Feat! Maybe someone would be interested in giving them a task!
Simply Go Exploring! There are a lot of places in Green Valley that we only dipped our toes into. You could have them head down to Stinkmarsh, or maybe climb up the cliffs of Longridge. The world (Well, the Valley) is wholly open to them.
Explore Local Legends There are lots of local legends they can look into! Hopefully they search out something that isn't too far over their heads!
Continue Working for their Patron It would be an easy DM go to simply to have them continue working for their current Patron. They've probably been impressive enough fo a family to be interested in keeping them on.
Establish Themselves as Adventurers! Maybe they want to set up a Adventurers for Hire business? This "Heroes Guild" approach is really appealing to a lot of players and absolutely plays into Bumpkin Quest. Just remember, this is a place of low key problems that locals make really big deals out of. So the idea of slaying dragons shouldn't really be on the table... that is until an actual dragon shows up! Which one day absolutely should.

They've probably been impressive enough for a family to be interested in keeping them on.

2023.05.31 15:00 Ok-Reward-6390 21 [M4F] Brazil/anywhere - poet looks for a half to write about
I haven’t even flirted with anyone for such a long time that I thought this could be fun.
Some poems I really like:
Some songs I have been listening to:
