2023.05.31 06:25 TheMapesHotel Animal Services and area shelters are at critical over capacity, begging for community help

Wanted to share this plea for support from animal services as they are at critical over capacity. For anyone who doesn't know, Washoe County has been a pioneer in the national no kill shelter movement. For a long time we were one of the top areas in the nation for life saving and other organizations and municipalities called on us to help support their transition to no kill. It is heart breaking after years as a national no kill leader that space driven euthanasia is being considered in Washoe County. We were able to weather a tripling of yearly intake during the 2008 recession without resorting to this. Please see the asks for help below and lend support if you can.
"In a joint effort to combat an overwhelming overcapacity crisis, Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) and Nevada Humane Society (NHS) wish to issue a heartfelt plea for immediate community support. WCRAS is facing an unprecedented challenge as, after over a week of operating at critical capacity, on Tuesday May 30, 2023, WCRAS dog kennels reached 100 percent capacity, and more dogs are continuing to arrive with nowhere to go. While WCRAS isn’t an adoption agency, the animals that do not get reclaimed from WCRAS are made available for adoption by NHS, SPCA of Northern NV and many rescue group partners throughout our region. Many of these partnering shelters are also full.
WCRAS is incredibly saddened to have to consider the possibility of euthanasia to create space for incoming animals.
Understanding the power of community involvement in saving lives, WCRAS and NHS are appealing to the collective compassion of the local community. Together, we call upon all caring individuals in the area to rally behind this critical cause and make a lifesaving impact. To address the pressing crisis, WCRAS and NHS urge the community to help by:
1) Immediate Pickup of Owned WCRAS Pets: Pet owners are urged to promptly retrieve their pets from WCRAS. A quick response will prevent the heartbreaking loss of another pet’s life due to limited space. You can view lost and found pets on WCRAS website at www.24petconnect.com/WSHOFound.
2) Community Reunification of Lost Dogs: If community members find a lost dog, both organizations encourage leaving no stone unturned in efforts to reunite them with their owners. Visiting a public microchip scanning station, creating an online found pet report with WCRAS, and temporarily holding the pet for up to 48 hours can provide invaluable time. For more information visit https://www.helpingpetshome.com/
3) Adopt a Lifelong Companion: By adopting, community members not only offer a second chance to a deserving pet but also create valuable flow of animals through our shelters and into new homes.
4) Foster a Precious Life: For individuals unable to adopt a pet, fostering offers a temporary yet impactful solution. Fostering greatly improves a pet’s quality of life while simultaneously freeing up kennel space for incoming animals.
5) Volunteer and Make an Impact: Volunteers play a crucial part in providing care for pets, facilitating adoptions, and expanding overall capacity. Volunteering offers a meaningful way to support the animals in the community when adoption or fostering may not be feasible.
6) Donate to Animals in Need: Animals in shelters benefit greatly from donations of not only monetary value but also food, toys, bedding, and more. Donating provides important items for sheltered animals.
Washoe County Regional Animal Services and NHS urge community members to share this critical message far and wide. By raising awareness and spreading the word, the chances of a positive outcome for the dogs in our care increase exponentially. WCRAS and NHS extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate individuals in the community for their unwavering support and commitment to animal welfare."

2023.05.30 21:48 will1003 Rural Animal Shelter Options

This may not be allowed, but I've seen a few posts about the wake shelter approaching capacity at different times throughout the year which would mean the unfortunate euthanasia for space. If a rescue dog is in your heart, please consider looking outside of the triangle at some rural county shelters. These shelters operate on the constant necessity of euthanizing for space. This is not the shelters' fault - they are fighting an uphill battle in these areas where people devalue dogs as pets and treat them more like property.
My wife and I volunteer at the Pitt County animal shelter and they are very quickly approaching capacity and they currently have some of the most amazing dogs.
I'm not trying to take anything away from the Wake Co Animal Shelter, I just really want more folks to know that these rural shelters and consistently drowning.

Nicole needs a home. Monroe County Alabama Animal Shelter
‼️ Urgent ‼️ Depressed Baby Alert!!! Her best friend was adopted earlier this week. Nicole is heartbroken, she is just wanting to lay around. Not even wanting to greet for loving. She has been staying on top of her dog house keeping a eye out. Hopefully tomorrow she will be paired up with a new fur friend.
Please Share to help Save Nicole. Adoption Sponsored. Adoption fee $0 To approved adopters, must fill out a application!
Nicole 3 yr old spayed female, mix breed, est 45lbs Nicole was brought into the shelter on May 5th, 2022. She was picked up by animal control as a stray outside of Monroe Academy. Nicole is an absolute sweetheart. She’s energetic, bouncy and a giant ham. She’s such a happy girl, always with a fast wiggling behind and a big smile on her face! We don’t think we’ve ever seen this gorgeous girl have a bad day. She is always up for an adventure, whether it’s going for a walk, some belly rubbing or some time out in the play yard with a friend. Her favorite activities include tousling with a doggie friend, playing with balls and sitting on top of her dog house babysitting the shelter workers while we go about our days. She loves humans, big and small and greets everyone with a tail wag. Nicole is fantastic with other dogs, having been tested with several different ones and sharing a kennel with a variety of friends. She would love to be in a home with another pup that can match her energy as she has plenty to spare for playing! She does walk pretty good on a leash, but is another one that gets easily distracted. She does need help with potty training, but it wouldn’t take her long to catch on with a schedule! She’s a smart girl with so much love to offer. Who can give her a chance?

2023.05.30 07:11 omnidellin Volunteers seek help in dealing with Plumas County's feral cats

Volunteers seek help in dealing with Plumas County's feral cats
Long time lurker, first time posting.
I would like to ask help from the subreddit.
My area receives so little funding and have so many local problems( wildfire, cat hoarder, and lack of spade/neuter). Our shelter will call if animals have tags or chips but not for long before dispose them. We have a charity Friends of Plumas County Animals but they are so underfunded, understaffed, and over crowded.
Please see attached article
https://www.plumasnews.com/volunteers-seek-help-in-dealing-with-plumas-countys-feral-cats/
I feel this gentleman was someone’s cat before. He wants to be again. The only thing that had kept him safe is he went through the barn cat program. If you have never heard of it. They capture neighborhood cats (feral or stray) give basic shots spay/neuter them, clip or bob their ear for identification. Then return them to where they were found.
This could explain why he keeps his distance. He just has the demeanor of someone who has lost everything and everyone he has ever known. Then he put through the system and drop into the wild to fend for himself.
I want to help him. He is so sweet. If you sit for a minute. He will let you scratch him on the head. He will purr the sweetest purr and drool for joy. I guess I am the only one around that shown him affection so now he is around my house a lot. He waits by my window like this every day. He loves to sit next to me when I work in the garden and loves to escort me around the yard.
As a renter I simple can not have any animals per landlord. Then when I called around I found out how my county works I was saddened and determined to help him find a forever home.
We are around Portola Ca. We do have summer heat in the 90’s here and 6+ feet of snow in the winter. I love to find him a home before either extreme.
We are willing to possibly travel a reasonable distance to help him get home. We have collected donations from the area, a cat carrier and litter box and bowls and of course his cube and his cat house from locals who want to see what’s best for him. We are looking for someone willing to take the time to teach this handsome boy not all humans are the same.
If you have questions that I may be able to answer or better yet you would like to help please message me. If this is not allowed here please let me know admins where I can post. If you can cross post this somewhere els you think if would help please do. I have seen amazing things happen here on Reddit I hope with the power of all of you, he can live the rest of his life, as his best life.

2023.05.28 11:20 Pulelehua Hurricane season is here again and we think it’s always good to be prepared and stay informed. Here are some helpful resources to assist you, your families, and communities.

As many of you might know ~ the NOAA recently put out their annual report for 2023. You can read more details in the link below.
https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-predicts-near-or-above-normal-2023-central-pacific-hurricane-season#:~:text=For%20the%202023%20season%2C%204,depressions%2C%20tropical%20storms%20and%20hurricanes.
National forecasters recently upped the chances that a “potentially significant” El Niño will form soon. Also scheduled to start soon, on June 1, is hurricane season. The strength and location of storms we see could be influenced by the return of El Niño for the first time in years.
While El Niño can strengthen hurricane season in the central and eastern Pacific, it tends to contribute to weaker hurricanes forming in the Atlantic basin. During La Niña years, the opposite is true.
Hurricane season in the Atlantic and central Pacific runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 every year. The eastern Pacific’s season starts a bit earlier, on May 15. The strongest storms are usually observed between mid-August and mid-October.

We have gathered and put together a list of some helpful resources for anyone who’s interested. Also a few links that might assist you and your families to be better prepared for whatever this hurricane season may bring.

Pit bull blows foster home by attacking foster owner and her boyfriend as the couple have sex (2022) Florida
September 9, 2022 - Hernando County Animal Services receives a stray pit bull. Dog will later be known as both Meatball and Huey.
and then - Humane Society of Pinellas pulls him.
and then - HSP fosters him out.
and then - pit bull becomes agitated when the foster and her boyfriend have sex, and attacks them, biting both. The foster calls police, who seemingly remove the pit bull back to the shelter.
It's unclear exactly how this played out - one rescue claims the couple were having sex in the shower and the dog attacked them there. The police complaint about the attack notes that the dog "is friendly but does not like water."
Also unclear is whether police transport dog to HSP or HCAS. In any event, he ends up on the at-risk-of-being-euthanized list at Hernando County Animal Services.
And then rescue group Humans And Animals United pulls him. And fosters him out.

2023.05.25 02:47 drdausersmd How to help stray cats in my apartment complex?

So there's this one stray who looks to be in pretty bad shape. I want to help but don't know what to do.
Right after I snapped the pic below, I also saw a mom and kitten kitties hide under a car.
https://imageshack.com/i/pnrrQmNcj
pic is kinda graphic, I'm sorry. but I feels so bad for the little guy. Can I call an animal shelter to maybe try and trap him and get him some medical care? Or are their any non-profits in the county that help with this kind of thing?
I'm in Lawrenceville, btw.

Foster to adopt. Vets please give advice
I'm asking all the Akita heads to please advise about the checklist to mark off in advance of ownership. They say if it seems to be too good to be true it probably is...I found this bitch at my County animal shelter. Obviously I'm dropping a pic because t think she's beautiful ( that's her winter coat, she's dropping right now like a rag doll). I was taking a blue white Amstaff I cared for the next day back to another State to be put down... but that's another story.... but they did a meet and greet (she's still intact, and he was neutered late, so I was not so sure). Surprisingly, me or neither dog shed blood that night...he ended up being taken by a Bully Rescue for major medical, he's end of life... I'm very shy about taking full guardianship without knowing I'm clear of someone else's hardship. She's intact, supposedly approximately 2, I haven't scaled her... last known weight 70 lb. Her teeth are white as snow, and zero mental issues. Original owner said she aggressive towards other dogs and territorial over food bowl... which is all normal in my book. I've noticed she's had a dry cough, very sporadic, but scares the shit out of me because my Amstaff had a cough...(congestive heart failure) What do I need checked off on at the vet? She's not going to be a breeder, the County owns her until fixed and chipped. I used to be vet tech surgical assistant, but I have witnessed the most extraordinary clownery by veterinarian's lately...
